The official Halo ODST collaboration shows that the studio’s comments were not a blanket ban; they describe a selective approach, not a promise that any particular franchise will appear.
What makes a crossover fit Helldivers 2?
In April 2024, Arrowhead community manager Twinbeard said the studio considered crossovers “with interest” while showing “a very large respect for the game fantasy and lore,” according to GameSpot and GamesRadar+. Twinbeard summed up the principle simply: “Crossovers have to make sense.” These were remarks reported from the game’s Discord, not a formal, exhaustive policy.

Keep the borrowed element in the game’s world
Twinbeard’s examples draw a line between an idea that can be adapted and a conspicuous guest appearance that would disrupt the setting. A melee weapon or an artifact a Helldiver discovers could feel at home; lightsabers or Mickey Mouse writing a Helldiver would not. The point is not that every familiar object is automatically acceptable, but that the collaboration should read as part of Helldivers 2 rather than a visitor from an unrelated fictional world.
Add more than a recognizable name
Twinbeard also said Arrowhead did not want the game to become “Kingdom Hearts or Fortnite.” If the studio does a crossover, he said, it should add something “feelgood, fun, a memory” while still fitting in. That makes tone and player experience part of the test, alongside lore: a recognizable franchise alone is not enough.

Why Halo ODST passed the test
The official Halo ODST collaboration is the clearest example of Arrowhead’s stated approach in practice. On an official Xbox Wire podcast, Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson said studio members were Halo fans and called ODST “just, like, the perfect fit.” He also stressed that it was important to choose the right partnership.
Halo Studios’ Corrinne Robinson described the teams’ work on the collaboration’s weapons, models, and animations, including attention to details from the source material. That matters because a fitting concept still needs thoughtful execution: adapting familiar elements to the game is different from dropping in a guest character unchanged.

The example also resolves an apparent contradiction in earlier coverage. In May 2024, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt reportedly said a Halo crossover was “a safe bet to say never,” in a GameSpot report about a prompt involving a fan-made mod video. That comment predates the official ODST collaboration; it should be read as a dated remark, not a permanent rule against Halo partnerships.

Arrowhead has not announced a particular future crossover in the sources available here. The criteria behind the ODST example nevertheless offer a practical way to think about what might work:

- Does it suit the setting and tone? The borrowed material should not make the game’s fictional world feel arbitrary or turn the collaboration into a conspicuous intrusion.
- Does it add something worthwhile? The partnership should offer players something fun, meaningful, or memorable—not just a logo or a recognizable name.
- Can the teams adapt it with care? The ODST collaboration involved work on weapons, models, and animations, with attention to the source material. That is an example of respectful implementation, not proof that every popular franchise would translate equally well.
These are ways to apply Arrowhead’s stated principles, not a published scoring system or a guarantee that a candidate will be approved.
What Arrowhead has said about Fortnite
In September 2025, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani reportedly said a Fortnite collaboration was “not a priority,” while adding, “But who knows one day.” He also described Fortnite as “cool” and “quite big,” according to GameSpot. That is a statement about the studio’s priorities at that time—not a permanent rejection or confirmation that a deal is in development.
