Omens of Tyranny was announced as live and released for Helldivers 2 on December 12, 2024. The major update brought back the Illuminate, added battles in urban colonies and introduced the Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV).
When did the Omens of Tyranny update come out?
Omens of Tyranny came out on December 12, 2024. Arrowhead Game Studios community manager Katherine Baskin’s PlayStation Blog announcement that day said the update was live. The post’s headline and closing paragraph also confirm its live status.

Was Omens of Tyranny announced and released on the same day?

The Voteless and urban colony missions
The announcement describes the Voteless as citizens changed through Illuminate mind control. Players also gained missions in colony streets, with close-quarters encounters, dark alleys and branching routes—a more confined setting than the game’s familiar open terrain.
A Fast Recon Vehicle for squad combat
The Fast Recon Vehicle, or FRV, is a manual-transmission vehicle designed for reconnaissance and combat. Squad members can ride together, and passengers can fire from its windows. The announcement said access would be delivered through Major Orders; it did not promise every player immediate personal access at launch. Baskin described it as a vehicle that would “appear in the colonies, ready to plow through the Illuminate at high speed.”

What changed in the December 17 patch?
Arrowhead’s PATCH 01.002.001 notes, published December 17, 2024 at 09:46 as stated on the page, followed the launch with balance updates and fixes. They cover weapons, stratagems, armor passives, boosters, exosuits and other systems, as well as crash, social-menu and gameplay issues. The notes also reiterate the update’s faction, colony missions and vehicle; these follow-up changes are distinct from the headline features of the December 12 announcement.
