The requirement did not go forward. That makes the original headline’s present-tense claim outdated: the available official statements do not say Steam players are currently being forced to link PSN accounts.
What happened with Helldivers 2’s PSN linking plan?
PlayStation’s Steam announcement on May 2, 2024 said account linking had been temporarily optional because of technical issues at launch. It set May 6 as the date new Steam players would need to link accounts. Existing players were to begin seeing a mandatory login on May 30 and complete linking by June 4.
On May 6, PlayStation updated the announcement and cancelled that change: “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” PlayStation added: “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable.”
PlayStation said the original setup was intended to support safety and security and provide a way to report and moderate players. That was Sony’s stated rationale; the announcement does not establish that linking measurably improved safety.

Do Steam players need a PSN account to play?
The 2024 announcement described a planned requirement that was withdrawn. It is not evidence of a current requirement. Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2 FAQ says Steam players do not need PlayStation Plus for online play. It also says the game requires an internet connection.
Keep that answer separate from whether the game is listed for sale in your location. Store availability can change by country and date, and a listing problem is not proof that Sony reinstated its PSN-linking plan.

Does linking accounts transfer progress between Steam and PS5?
No. Arrowhead’s cross-play and cross-progression support article says there is no cross-progression and that linking Steam and PSN accounts does not transfer save data between PC and PS5. Arrowhead says it has no plans for cross-progression at this time.
Cross-play is a different feature: it lets players on supported platforms play together, and Arrowhead’s FAQ says it can be disabled. Cross-play does not mean shared saves, and account linking does not create cross-progression.

Is Helldivers 2 available on Steam in every country?
Availability has varied by region. Windows Central reported in June 2025 that Sony had removed most previous regional restrictions on Helldivers 2 and several other PC games, while seven regions remained restricted at the time. That is a dated report, not a guarantee of current availability everywhere.
In September 2026, GamesRadar reported that Helldivers 2 and Horizon Forbidden West had become unavailable on Steam in the UK. A Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson told the outlet: “We are aware of an issue affecting the availability of select titles on Steam in the UK.” The spokesperson added: “We are working with Valve to address the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience.” The report described an issue Sony was addressing, but did not establish its eventual resolution. This store-availability issue is separate from the cancelled PSN-linking plan.

What to check if you want to play
- Check the game’s Steam listing in your country for current purchase availability.
- If you already own it on Steam, the withdrawn 2024 announcement does not establish a current PSN-linking requirement.
- If you are choosing between Steam and PS5, do not expect account linking to carry save progress between them.
- For Steam online play, Arrowhead says PS Plus is not required; an internet connection is required.
For context on the game’s reach, Sony Interactive Entertainment said Helldivers 2 had more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as of August 9, 2026. Sony also announced on August 12, 2026 that the game joined the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog; neither announcement changes the distinction between account linking and cross-progression.
