Did the Illuminate return after being eradicated?
Yes—in Helldivers 2’s fiction, the Illuminate resurfaced after Helldivers believed they had wiped them out at the end of the First Galactic War. PlayStation’s December 12, 2024 announcement puts it plainly: “At the end of the First Galactic War, the Helldivers worked together to eradicate the Illuminate.” It then qualifies the victory: “We believed we were successful.” PlayStation Blog’s Omens of Tyranny announcement describes nearly a century of relative peace before the faction emerged again.

The return was a central feature of Omens of Tyranny, which PlayStation announced as live on December 12, 2024. The apparent contradiction is therefore part of the game’s narrative: the Helldivers thought the Illuminate were gone, but the faction survived or otherwise returned.
Was it really less than 24 hours?
That specific interval is a player-reported description, not a timeline confirmed by the official announcement. A Reddit discussion snippet dated December 16, 2024 says, “And now not even 24 hrs later the illuminate are back.” It captures how players described the apparent reversal, but the discussion page was unavailable and the snippet does not establish the exact in-game chronology. So the careful version is: players said the Illuminate returned less than a day after they believed the faction had been eradicated; the official source confirms the lore and the 2024 return, but not that precise elapsed time.

The December 2024 Omens of Tyranny return and the later Void-focused campaign are separate events. In a September 25, 2026 retrospective, Arrowhead discussed a campaign in which the Void had been pierced and the latest Illuminate activity dealt with. Creative director Mikael Eriksson described the studio’s aim as “a future where the Galactic War is this interesting and dynamic every day, and felt inside and out of the game.” Arrowhead’s Steam announcement

That later campaign is useful context for Helldivers 2’s evolving live narrative, but it does not verify the community’s less-than-24-hour claim about the 2024 return.
