The cancellation withdrew that scheduled update; Sony did not promise that its policies could never change in the future.
What Sony planned—and when it changed course
On May 2, 2024, a Steam announcement explained that linking Steam and PSN accounts had been temporarily optional because of technical issues at launch. It proposed two deadlines: new players would need to link from May 6, and existing Steam players would begin seeing a mandatory login prompt on May 30, with linking due by June 4.

On May 6, the announcement was amended: the update requiring Steam and PSN account linking “will not be moving forward.” PlayStation’s statement, reproduced in Game Informer’s report, opened by saying it had heard fans’ feedback. That is Sony’s stated public explanation; the statement does not establish what other considerations shaped the decision.
What the cancellation means for Steam players
The May 2024 deadlines were part of the cancelled plan, not requirements that players still have to meet under that update. Sony said that particular update would not proceed. It did not make a permanent guarantee against every possible future policy change.

Account linking is not cross-play or cross-progression
These terms describe different things. Arrowhead Game Studios’ player-support article, updated October 7, 2026, distinguishes them as follows:
- Account linking: Connecting Steam and PSN identities. The scheduled Steam-to-PSN requirement was cancelled.
- Cross-play: Playing with people on other platforms. Arrowhead says it is available across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
- Cross-progression or cross-save: Carrying progress between platform versions. Arrowhead says this is not available; linking Steam and PSN does not copy game data between PC and PS5.
- Cross-buy: Owning the game on one platform and receiving it on another. Arrowhead says this is not available.
Does linking accounts transfer your progress?
No. According to Arrowhead’s support guidance, linking Steam and PSN does not synchronize or transfer game data between the PC and PS5 versions. Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together; it does not mean they share one saved progression or one purchase.
