PlayStation’s current PC support FAQ now says some games and features may require sign-in or account linking, wording that differs from an earlier version preserved at the time. That establishes a change in wording, not why or exactly when it happened. The game’s reach remains substantial by Sony’s latest published measure: more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as of August 9, 2026—a cumulative total, not an active-player count.
Do Steam players need a PSN account to play Helldivers 2?
Sony’s May 2024 plan to require Steam players to link a PlayStation Network account was abandoned. Its official Steam announcement, first posted May 2 and updated May 6, set a May 6 start date for new players and a June 4 deadline for existing players. In the update, Sony said the change “will not be moving forward.”
That decision is specific to the abandoned Helldivers 2 plan. PlayStation’s present PC FAQ uses broader language about sign-in and linking across some games and features, but it does not reinstate that Helldivers 2 requirement.
What changed in PlayStation’s PC sign-in FAQ?
The current PlayStation PC support FAQ says: “Some PlayStation games and features may require you to sign in or link to an account for PlayStation.” A Steam community discussion dated May 3, 2024 preserves what it identifies as earlier FAQ wording: “Signing in to PSN is optional when playing a PlayStation game on PC.”

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Those two records show different wording at different times. They do not establish the exact date of the edit, Sony’s reason for changing it, or an effort to conceal the change. The current FAQ speaks generally about PlayStation games and features; Sony’s separate Helldivers 2 announcement confirms that its specific 2024 linking plan was dropped.
Why did Sony propose linking accounts, and why did players object?
Sony said account linking could help address griefing and abuse, enable bans, and allow banned players to appeal. In its May 2 announcement, it called account linking “critical” to player safety and security. That was Sony’s stated rationale, not proof that linking was the only way to achieve those goals.

Players objected to a requirement announced after the game had launched, including because PSN was not available in every country. Ars Technica reported during the May 2024 controversy that Helldivers 2 had been delisted from Steam in 177 countries. That is a contemporaneous report about the episode, not a current availability figure.
Is Helldivers 2 still popular in 2026?
Sony reported that Helldivers 2 had welcomed more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as of August 9, 2026. The company announced on August 12 that the game was joining the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and said it would continue expanding the game’s story and content. The player total indicates broad cumulative reach; Sony did not provide a platform breakdown, and the figure does not show how many people are playing now or concurrently.

How can you play Helldivers 2, and what carries across platforms?
The access route depends on platform. Arrowhead’s FAQ lists Steam and PS5, while Sony’s 2026 announcement also includes Xbox Series X|S. The game requires an internet connection and supports cross-play, so players can team up across supported platforms.
| Platform or route | Account and online access | Purchase or subscription |
|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam) | Internet connection required. The proposed 2024 Helldivers 2 PSN-linking requirement was withdrawn. | Steam purchase. |
| PS5 | Internet connection and PS Plus are required for online play. | Purchase or, where available, PlayStation Plus Game Catalog access. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Included in Sony’s August 2026 player-total announcement; the cited announcement does not detail account or online-subscription requirements. | The cited announcement does not specify purchase or subscription terms. |
| PlayStation Plus Game Catalog | Access is subject to country or region and subscription plan. | Sony announced availability for Extra and Premium members beginning August 12, 2026. |
Arrowhead says cross-play is supported, but cross-progression, cross-save and cross-buy are not. Linking Steam and PSN accounts does not transfer progress between PC and PS5 copies. On PS5, PlayStation’s store listing also specifies DualSense vibration and trigger effects; Arrowhead says DualSense haptics work on PC when Steam Input is disabled.
