You can explore the campaign on your own, run Normal Follower Dungeons with NPCs, tackle Delves with a companion, and, in the Story Mode encounter Blizzard describes, face Queen Ansurek with NPC help.
What “solo-friendly” means in The War Within
World of Warcraft is still an MMORPG with group content. The War Within’s solo options instead make it easier to follow the story, learn dungeon mechanics, and pursue some combat and progression without forming a party of other players. Some experiences are genuinely solo; others fill out your party with computer-controlled allies.

Blizzard framed The War Within as the opening chapter of the three-part Worldsoul Saga. Its launch material sets the story in Khaz Algar amid conflict involving the Nerubian empire and Xal’atath. That gives the expansion an epic narrative backdrop, but solo support does not guarantee that every raid story beat or group activity is available alone.
Which activities can you play solo?
| Activity | How solo support works | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign, side quests, and exploration | Blizzard’s solo guide says you can take on quests, treasures, and exploration at your own pace. | Following the setting and main narrative at your preferred pace. | Some questlines point toward dungeons; Follower Dungeons are the guide’s option for Normal-difficulty dungeon play without a player party. |
| Follower Dungeons | Normal-difficulty dungeons with four NPC teammates. You can select a role and choose whether an NPC leads or you lead. | Seeing dungeon stories and practicing mechanics without coordinating with other players. | This describes Normal difficulty, not every difficulty or every dungeon. The dungeon roster can change. |
| Delves | Designed for solo play or groups of up to five, with a customizable NPC companion; Blizzard describes the activity as role-agnostic. | Shorter combat, puzzles, platforming, bosses, and progression sessions. | Tiers, rewards, and seasonal details can change; check current in-game information for live values. |
| Story Mode | Blizzard’s guide describes a solo encounter with Queen Ansurek supported by nine NPC companions. | Experiencing a raid narrative encounter without joining a raid group. | The guide says Story Mode would continue in future raid dungeons, but it does not establish which encounters are available now. |
Follower Dungeons let you enter Normal dungeons with NPCs
Blizzard describes Follower Dungeons as a way to play Normal-difficulty dungeons with four NPC teammates. You can pick a role and decide whether to follow an NPC lead or lead the group yourself. That makes them useful both for story-focused players and for anyone who wants a lower-pressure setting to get familiar with dungeon flow.

They are not evidence that all dungeons, difficulties, or endgame activities can be completed alone. If a quest sends you to a dungeon, check whether it is available as a Follower Dungeon rather than assuming every version has NPC support. Blizzard’s guide gives the feature overview, not a guaranteed current roster.
Delves are the clearest solo progression option
Delves are built for solo adventurers as well as groups of up to five, with an NPC companion that can be customized. Blizzard characterizes them as role-agnostic and describes a mix of combat, puzzles, platforming, and bosses, making them a more varied alternative to simply questing alone.
Rank #2
- Warcraft III Battle Chest
Blizzard estimates that a Delve takes 10–15 minutes on average. That is the publisher’s stated average, not an independent test result, and an individual run can differ. Blizzard’s launch description also included experience and rewards, with loot up to heroic raid level at launch; that is historical launch information, not a statement of current seasonal reward levels. Check the active season’s details before planning around specific rewards.
Story Mode covers a raid story encounter, not every raid
Blizzard’s guide says Story Mode lets a solo player face Queen Ansurek with nine NPC companions, so players can see that encounter’s story without assistance from other players. The guide also says the mode would continue in future raid dungeons within The War Within and the Worldsoul Saga. It does not list the encounter roster available in October 2026, so verify in-game availability rather than assuming a particular raid can currently be played this way.

Blizzard’s solo guide presents this leveling route: Exile’s Reach at levels 1–10, Dragonflight from 10–70, then The War Within from 70–80. It recommends Dragonflight for solo players because that expansion includes Follower Dungeons. Treat those levels and route as the guide’s description; leveling paths may differ in a later client build.
The same guide says new or returning players may choose a starting area and, after level 10, continue through Dragonflight or choose a Timewalking Campaign. Blizzard Support’s search result dated January 20, 2026 says The War Within is included in the WoW subscription. Because subscription and access terms can vary by region or account and may change, confirm the current terms on your account before subscribing or buying anything.

Who will enjoy the solo-friendly design?
- Story-first players: The campaign, side quests, and the documented Story Mode encounter offer ways to follow major parts of the narrative without relying on a group.
- Dungeon learners: Follower Dungeons provide a Normal-difficulty setting with NPC teammates and the option to lead or follow.
- Players who want structured solo sessions: Delves combine varied challenges with an NPC companion, though their live tiers and rewards are seasonal.
- Players seeking a fully single-player game: The solo systems reduce the need to form parties, but they do not remove WoW’s multiplayer nature or establish that all group content is soloable.
