In Hello Neighbor on Nintendo Switch, your goal is to explore the Neighbor’s house and uncover the secret in its basement. The game gives you limited direction after its brief tutorial, so make progress by watching the Neighbor, entering with a small goal, and changing your approach when a route becomes risky.
What to do after the tutorial
Treat each attempt as a short investigation, not a race to the basement. Before approaching the house, check where the Neighbor is and choose one immediate objective: find a useful item, inspect a room, or look for another way in. If the approach becomes unsafe, retreat and try again with a different plan.

This is a stealth-and-puzzle game, and the Neighbor’s behavior is part of the challenge. Nintendo describes the AI as learning from your actions; tinyBuild likewise presents it as procedural AI. That premise means repeating the same route may prompt a response, but it does not establish a fixed sequence of traps or events.
Beginner tactics for exploring the house
Observe before you enter
Watch the Neighbor’s location and movement before committing to an approach. Use that moment to decide where you want to go and what you are trying to accomplish, rather than entering without a purpose.

Keep each attempt focused
Choose one manageable objective, then look for items or routes that could help with it. A focused attempt makes it easier to notice what worked and to change plans if the Neighbor blocks your way.
Use movement and objects thoughtfully
The basic actions described for the game include moving, jumping, sprinting, sneaking, picking up objects, and throwing them. Hiding or retreating after detection are also suggested beginner responses. The exact Switch button mapping is not established here; check the in-game controls menu rather than relying on instructions for another platform.

Vary routes when the Neighbor responds
Nintendo gives examples of adaptive countermeasures: a bear trap near a window route used repeatedly, or cameras around a frequently used door. These examples illustrate the game’s premise, not a guaranteed progression. If a familiar entry becomes unsafe, consider another route or a different objective.
