Hello Neighbor is a first-person stealth horror game about sneaking into a neighbor’s house, solving environmental puzzles, and trying to reach the secrets in his basement. Its central hook is an opponent advertised as learning from your repeated tactics. That premise gives the game a clear source of tension, but the advertised AI behavior should not be mistaken for independently verified performance; the available review evidence also includes a notably negative GameSpot score, not a broad critical consensus.
What kind of game is Hello Neighbor?
Steam describes Hello Neighbor as a stealth horror game in which you sneak into the neighbor’s home to uncover what is hidden in the basement. The basic loop is built around exploring the house, finding and using objects, solving environmental puzzles, and avoiding detection. The game’s official descriptions emphasize interacting with the environment rather than confronting the neighbor directly.

That setup is the game’s strongest immediate appeal: an ordinary-looking house becomes a puzzle space where routes, obstacles, hiding places, and distractions matter. The Google Play listing also describes hiding, throwing objects, and finding alternative escape routes. These are descriptions of intended design from storefronts, not independent confirmation of how consistently the systems work in play.
How does the neighbor’s adaptive AI fit the premise?
The advertised twist is that the neighbor’s AI learns from player behavior and can counter repeated routes with traps or shortcuts. Both Steam and the official PlayStation listing present adaptation as a central feature. In concept, that promise suits a stealth game: repeating the same approach should feel risky, encouraging players to observe the house and vary their plans.

However, the cited store descriptions establish what the game is marketed to do, not how effective or perceptive the AI is in practice. No gameplay testing is established here, so this review cannot verify how well the neighbor adapts, whether the response feels fair, or how much it changes a particular playthrough. Treat the adaptive-AI claim as part of the pitch rather than a guaranteed measure of the game’s quality.
What do reviews say about Hello Neighbor?
GameSpot’s review listing, written by Justin Clark, displays a score of 3 with a “Bad” label. That is a clear negative assessment from one publication, and it is useful context for readers who want a critic’s perspective. It is not an aggregate score and does not establish a universal critical consensus.

Steam’s search listing showed “Very Positive,” with 84% positive from 10,730 English-language user reviews at the time of the result. Those figures can change as reviews accrue, and user-review sentiment is not directly comparable to a critic’s score. Taken together, these listings show differing signals rather than a single verdict that can stand in for every player’s experience.
Is Hello Neighbor appropriate for children?
In the United States, the ESRB rates Hello Neighbor E10+ for Everyone 10+ with Mild Violence. Its rating summary describes a boy investigating a mysterious neighbor, sneaking into his home, solving puzzles, and finding objects. The official PlayStation listing separately identifies Fantasy Violence. These are region- and rating-board-specific labels; the US ESRB classification should not be treated as an international rating.

Platforms and PC requirements
GameSpot lists PC, Android, iOS, Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5 among the game’s platforms. Availability can vary by edition and current storefront status, so check the relevant store for your region before assuming a version is currently purchasable. The available information does not establish equivalent prices, performance, control quality, or physical formats across platforms.
Steam identifies Dynamic Pixels as the developer and tinyBuild as the publisher, and gives the release date as December 8, 2017. For the Steam PC listing, the published requirements are:

tinyBuild’s 2025 annual report says that the Hello Neighbor franchise extends to books and graphic novels and reports over 4 million copies sold. The cited passage does not specify the reporting cut-off or divide sales by title or format, so the figure should not be read as sales of the original game alone.
