The best recent system-level price comparisons are two 2024 sales of Atari Cosmos prototype design mock-ups from Pong creator Allan Alcorn’s collection: $25,903 and $19,460, both including buyer’s premium. Neither was a working Cosmos: both lacked the logic board. A separate Cosmos Asteroids hologram with period materials sold for $1,503 in 2026. These are prices paid for specific auction lots—not a guaranteed value for every Cosmos-related artifact.

Recent Atari Cosmos auction results

The strongest recent comparisons for a Cosmos system-shaped object come from two RR Auction sales in 2024. The third result below is useful context, but it was a hologram lot rather than a console or complete system.

Artifact and sale Reported result What the lot included or lacked
Cosmos prototype design mock-up from Allan Alcorn’s collection, March 21, 2024 $25,903, including buyer’s premium (RR Auction, 2024) The lot lacked its logic board and did not power up. RR Auction lot record
Cosmos prototype design mock-up from Allan Alcorn’s collection, August 22, 2024 $19,460, including buyer’s premium (RR Auction, 2024) The lot lacked its logic board and was described as non-functional. RR Auction lot record
Asteroids dual-incandescent hologram with period promotional and specification materials, August 20, 2026 $1,503, including buyer’s premium (RR Auction, 2026) A hologram and associated materials, not a complete Cosmos system. RR Auction lot record

The two mock-up results differ by $6,443 even though both were described as non-functional and came from Alcorn’s collection. The available lot information does not establish why one sold for more, so the difference should not be assigned to a particular condition detail or bidding factor.

What the auction prices mean for an individual Cosmos item

These sales are realized prices for particular objects at a specialist auction house. They do not establish a market-wide average, a current asking price, or what another item will sell for. The mock-ups are relevant comparisons for similar design artifacts, but they are not direct evidence of the value of a working prototype or complete system.

Before comparing or appraising an item, identify exactly what it is. A complete or working prototype, an empty design mock-up, an individual hologram, original packaging, and documentation are different kinds of collectibles. Authentication and provenance, completeness, operation, cosmetic condition, and included original materials also matter. The cited auction results do not provide numerical adjustments for any of those factors.

  • Artifact type and completeness: establish whether the object is a system, mock-up, hologram, or related material, and note missing components.
  • Provenance and authentication: document the object’s history and any evidence supporting its identification.
  • Operation and condition: distinguish a working object from one described as non-functional, and record cosmetic state.
  • Included materials: list original holograms, packaging, paperwork, and other items included in the sale.
  • Sale context: compare dates and venues, and check whether a quoted result includes buyer’s premium.

A seller considering a sale can use specialist video-game memorabilia auction records as comparables, but should seek an item-specific appraisal rather than treating these results as a promise of proceeds.

What Atari Cosmos was—and why it has no ordinary retail price history

Atari developed Cosmos as an unreleased tabletop electronic game system. It paired a red LED array with holographic images on game cartridges; the holograms supplied game-themed imagery over the display. That is more precise than describing it as a modern free-floating 3-D projection. Roger Hector’s account and the Atari Gaming Headquarters Museum history describe the project and its planned system.

Atari engineer and designer Roger Hector said the project reached production tooling and pilot production with eight cartridges: “It went all the way through production tooling and pilot production with 8 game cartridges.” Hector also recounted that CEO Ray Kassar told him Atari had overbooked VCS orders and needed production capacity, so Cosmos would be held back. That is Hector’s account of the explanation he received, not an independently established sole cause for the project’s cancellation. Atari Compendium account

The Atari Gaming Headquarters Museum reports planned retail prices of $100 for the console and $10 for cartridges. Those were proposed prices, not prices consumers paid: Cosmos was never released, so it did not develop a normal consumer market or retail transaction history. How rare is the Atari Cosmos?

Cosmos is extremely rare because it never reached retail, and specialist auction descriptions characterize surviving hardware and components as exceedingly rare. A reliable current census is not established. Published counts differ: the Atari Gaming Headquarters Museum account said one system had then been located, while a later Handheld Museum entry described six known units, including mock-ups and working prototypes. Those dated secondary accounts may use different scopes; neither is a settled current total. Atari Gaming Headquarters Museum · Handheld Museum
