Both deployment models work. Use a VPS when Hermes Agent must stay online for messaging gateways, scheduled jobs, or persistent memory. Run it locally when you want the least administration, already own a suitable computer, or intend to host the language model yourself. A hosted-API setup is relatively light; a local-model setup is the hardware-intensive option.

Choose the location by uptime and model placement
Hermes Agent is software you can install on Linux, macOS, Windows through WSL2 or native PowerShell, and Android through Termux. The official repository also documents desktop builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The important decision is not whether the agent can start in either place; it is what must remain available after you close your terminal.

Choose a VPS when the agent must be reachable 24/7
- Telegram or Discord gateways should receive messages while your personal computer is asleep.
- Scheduled jobs and reminders must run at predictable times.
- Persistent memory and background tasks should survive a laptop reboot or travel.
- You prefer a small, always-on machine while calling a hosted model API.
Choose local execution for personal, hands-on use
- You launch Hermes only when you need it and do not want to manage a server.
- You already have a desktop or laptop with enough RAM for your chosen model.
- You want to keep inference on your own hardware, including an Ollama or LM Studio server.
- Your network, credentials, files, or experimentation are easier to control at home.
You can also split the roles: keep Hermes on a small VPS and run the model on another computer over a private network or SSH tunnel. That gives the agent Internet-facing uptime without requiring the VPS to contain a large model.

How much RAM and disk does Hermes Agent need?
There is no single official minimum that covers every configuration. Published setup guides disagree, and the figures below are third-party estimates rather than specifications from Nous Research. Treat them as sizing guidance, then leave headroom for your operating system, browser automation, logs, and other services.

Disk capacity is not just the installer size. Reserve space for model files, caches, conversation data, browser profiles, logs, and backups. A 5 GB VPS can be enough for a minimal hosted-API process, but it leaves little room for local models or long-lived browser data.
Install Hermes Agent on an Ubuntu VPS
The VPS procedure below assumes a current Ubuntu or Debian image, an SSH key, and a non-root account with sudo access. Older guides commonly mention Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12 because Ubuntu 22.04 may provide an older Python. The current first-party installation documentation targets Python 3.14 and does not promise runtime support for Python 3.11–3.13, so verify the official requirements before choosing an image.
1. Create and secure the server account
- Provision the VPS with at least 2 GB RAM for a comfortable hosted-API start; choose about 4 GB if several channels will stay connected, and 4–8 GB if browser automation is planned.
- Log in with an SSH key, create a dedicated user, and grant that user sudo rights. Do not run the agent as root.
- Apply operating-system updates, enable a firewall, and allow SSH only from the addresses or VPN you actually use. Open additional ports only when a gateway or reverse proxy requires them.
2. Inspect and run the installer
The common installation command is:

bash install.shThird-party guides report that the installer may arrange tools such as uv, Python, Node.js 22, ripgrep, and ffmpeg. That dependency list is aggregated guidance, not a guarantee from the official documentation, so read the installer output and confirm versions after it finishes.

3. Run first-time setup and diagnostics

hermes doctorComplete the setup prompts with the model provider, API credentials, and any channel credentials you intend to use. Run hermes doctor before troubleshooting a gateway: it can reveal missing runtimes, path problems, or incomplete configuration earlier than a background service will.
4. Configure persistence and channels
Store configuration and memory in the dedicated user’s home directory, not in a temporary shell directory. Keep API keys out of chat transcripts and source-controlled files; use the account’s environment or the configuration mechanism requested by the setup wizard. Add one messaging gateway at a time, send a test message, and confirm that replies, scheduled jobs, and memory survive a logout.

For 24/7 use, run Hermes under a service supervisor such as systemd rather than leaving it attached to an SSH session. The service should run as the dedicated non-root user, start after networking is available, restart on failure, and write logs to a location with rotation. After enabling it, reboot once and verify that the gateway reconnects without an interactive shell. If you do not need continuous operation, a scheduled user-level job is simpler and avoids keeping an idle process online.
6. Maintain the VPS
- Patch the operating system and Hermes on a planned schedule, then run
hermes doctoragain. - Back up configuration, memory, and any browser profiles before upgrades. Do not back up plaintext secrets to a world-readable location.
- Monitor RAM, disk, and swap. Browser automation and multiple channels can exhaust a small plan even when an API-only test was stable.
- Rotate credentials if logs, backups, or the server account are ever exposed.
Install locally on macOS, Linux, Windows, or Android
The same installer route is documented for Linux, macOS, WSL2, native Windows, and Android through Termux. Native Windows has a PowerShell one-liner in the official repository; WSL2 is an alternative when you prefer a Linux userland. The official desktop README lists macOS, Windows, and Linux builds, but desktop packaging and command-line installation are not necessarily identical, so follow the path matching the build you choose.

macOS considerations
Apple Silicon is the supported Mac route for the bootstrap installer. On an Intel Mac, the bootstrap installer reports that the platform is unsupported. Do not treat an Intel failure as a missing package; use a documented source-build or alternative environment only if its native compiler and platform libraries are available and the current instructions explicitly support it.
Linux and WSL2
Use a current distribution with Python 3.14 available or let the supported installer provision its environment. WSL2 is useful on Windows when you want Linux-compatible scripts without maintaining a separate VPS. Keep the WSL filesystem and Windows credentials protected, and remember that a sleeping Windows machine still stops background gateways.

Native Windows is listed as supported through PowerShell, while Android support is provided through Termux. Mobile devices are a poor fit for unattended gateways because Android may suspend background processes and aggressively restrict battery use. Treat Termux as an experimental or on-demand environment unless you have verified its background behavior for your device.
Local installation sequence
- Install the supported operating-system updates and confirm that Python 3.14 is the working target; do not assume an older Python version is covered just because an older guide says “3.11+.”
- Run the platform-appropriate installer, then execute
hermes setup. - Run
hermes doctorand fix every reported dependency or permission issue before adding channels. - Choose a hosted API for a lightweight computer, or configure Hermes to use a local model server such as Ollama or LM Studio.
- Disable sleep and ensure the machine remains powered if scheduled tasks or inbound messages must work continuously.
Using a local model changes the hardware decision
Hermes itself can be modest while the model is not. A hosted API moves inference to the provider, leaving your VPS or laptop to handle orchestration, tools, memory, and network traffic. A local model keeps data and inference on your equipment but adds model-file storage, RAM pressure, and often GPU requirements.

Hosted API
- Best fit for a small VPS or ordinary laptop.
- Predictable local resource use, but ongoing API charges and provider-side availability apply.
- Protect API keys and account limits; a compromised always-on agent can consume the account quickly.
Local model server
- Best fit when privacy, offline operation, or control over model selection outweighs setup complexity.
- Approximately 8 GB RAM is cited for small 3B models, while models above 27B are cited at 32 GB or more; these are guide estimates, not official Hermes requirements.
- You can run the model on another machine and connect over a local network or SSH, allowing a low-memory Hermes host to act as the controller.
Common failure modes and fixes
Python version mismatch
If setup selects an unsupported interpreter or dependency resolution fails, check the current first-party installation page and make Python 3.14 the baseline. Remove stale virtual environments only after preserving configuration and memory, then rerun the supported installer.
Installer works, but a gateway stops after logout
The process was likely tied to the SSH or terminal session. Move it under a service supervisor, verify the dedicated user owns its files, and test recovery with a reboot.
Memory usage keeps climbing
Check browser processes, concurrent channels, model-server usage, and log growth. Increase RAM before enabling swap as a permanent solution; swap can prevent an immediate crash but is much slower than memory.
Intel Mac is rejected
The bootstrap installer’s unsupported-platform message is an architecture limitation, not a missing command. Use Apple Silicon, a supported Linux/WSL2 environment, or a source-build path only when the current instructions list your compiler and libraries.

Local model responses are unusably slow
Reduce model size or context, use an appropriate quantized build, move inference to a machine with more RAM or a GPU, or switch Hermes to a hosted API while keeping the agent itself local.

A guide written for Hermes Agent v0.20 describes that major version line, but version numbers in third-party articles are not a substitute for the current official release information. Recheck the repository and installation documentation whenever you deploy or upgrade.

Can I move an existing local Hermes Agent installation to a VPS?
Yes. Recreate the supported runtime on the VPS, copy configuration and memory securely, run hermes doctor, and test each gateway before enabling unattended service operation.
Is a 1 GB VPS enough?
It may be adequate for a minimal hosted-API, single-user setup according to one third-party estimate, but 2 GB is a more comfortable baseline and about 4 GB is commonly suggested for several always-on channels.
Does Hermes Agent require a local GPU?
