For ranged, prioritize critical chance before critical damage; for early melee, put survivability and farming tempo ahead of a full critical setup. The recommendations below follow a guide updated October 5, 2026 for version 1.4.18, and are examples to adapt—not a universal ranking. (Pocket Gamer)
Choose a build around your weapon
The two progressions covered here are not interchangeable: ranged and melee call for different weapons, skills, and equipment. Decide which style you want to play before spending points. The build guide allows adjustments to select particular nodes, so treat its paths as a starting plan rather than fixed rules. Its recommendations are guide-author advice, not official developer guidance or independently tested results. (Pocket Gamer)
| Build | Skill emphasis | Gear examples and sources |
|---|---|---|
| Ranged | Critical chance first, then critical damage; add health and defense, movement speed, and magic as the build develops. | Carapean set: Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market or Deamon Mercenary reward. Compound Bow: Inventor’s Shop at Inventor’s Atelier. |
| Melee | Early survival and farming tempo, followed by Crit Master and critical development. | Carapean set: Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market or Deamon Mercenary reward. Daemon Dagger: Barnaba’s Shop. Enchanted Shield: Monstrous Skeleton at Graveyard. Enchanted Sword: Necromancer in Shadow Temple. |
Ranged build: establish critical chance before multiplier
Early priorities
If you have only one point to spend in the Dark Tree, the guide recommends Ferocious Hunger. In the main progression, it emphasizes critical chance and critical damage early, then recommends adding health and defense, movement speed, and magic. These are broad priorities rather than a complete point-by-point route.
Sequence the critical skills
Around level 50, the guide places Man of Focus in the progression, followed by Weak Spot Hunt and then Berserker Soul. The important ordering is Weak Spot Hunt before Berserker Soul: critical damage has less value if the character does not crit often enough to benefit from the multiplier. (Pocket Gamer)

Ranged equipment to pursue
- Carapean set: the guide lists Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market and the Deamon Mercenary reward as sources.
- Compound Bow: the listed source is Inventor’s Shop at Inventor’s Atelier.
These are in-game targets, not gear required to begin using a ranged build; pursue them when you can access the relevant shop or reward.
Melee build: build safety and momentum first
Early skill priorities
With limited Dark Tree points, the guide again recommends Ferocious Hunger. For the main tree, it prioritizes Divine Immunity and Onrush, then moves toward Crit Master and critical development. Community-wiki descriptions say Divine Immunity increases total defense, including item stats, while Onrush allows charge attacks during enemy-search time. (Hero Tale Wiki: Skills)

The guide characterizes melee as more viable following a block-mechanic rework. That is its assessment, not an official balance statement. It is a reason to consider the melee route—not proof that it is stronger for every player or situation. (Pocket Gamer)
Melee equipment to pursue
- Carapean set: Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market or the Deamon Mercenary reward.
- Daemon Dagger: Barnaba’s Shop.
- Enchanted Shield: Monstrous Skeleton at Graveyard.
- Enchanted Sword: Necromancer in Shadow Temple.
Think of these as examples for a melee setup. The guide distinguishes equipment by weapon style and does not establish that every listed item is available early or necessary for the build.

Crit Master and weapon skill
Community-wiki documentation says Crit Master requires the matching weapon equipped and that weapon’s skill at level 50 or higher; the Skills page describes automatic critical hits at that threshold. The weapon-specific requirement matters: reaching the level with a different weapon does not satisfy the stated condition. These details come from community documentation, so confirm the live-game behavior if it differs from what you see in-game. (Hero Tale Wiki: Skills; Hero Tale Wiki: FAQ)
One skill-tree reset
The community FAQ says a single skill-tree reset becomes available at level 15. Its listed method is to open the skill-tree screen and click the hero’s face. Because this instruction is documented by the community wiki and could change, check the current screen before relying on it as your only correction path. (Hero Tale Wiki: FAQ)

- Combat: the Skills page describes it as increasing melee weapon damage and attack speed.
Both descriptions are community-wiki documentation, not official developer statements. (Hero Tale Wiki: FAQ; Hero Tale Wiki: Skills)

How to adapt the recommendations
- Prefer distance and a bow? Use the ranged path and build critical chance before investing heavily in critical multiplier.
- Prefer close combat? Start with the melee path’s defense and Onrush priorities, then develop critical skills.
- Need a specific node? The guide says its paths can be adjusted. Follow the relevant weapon setup rather than copying the other build’s route.
- Still testing a style? Be deliberate with early points: the FAQ describes only one reset, at level 15.
- Planning around a named item? Check whether its listed shop, reward, or enemy source is accessible to your character before making it the centerpiece of your progression.
