Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe strongest practical check is whether the game’s publisher currently lists the seller as an approved retailer. Buying from the publisher’s own store is another direct option. A key that activates successfully is not proof of authorization, and it may still be revoked later.
Check the publisher’s current retailer information
First identify the game’s publisher, then visit its official website and look for an approved-retailer list or purchase guidance. Check the seller’s exact name against the publisher’s current information; where relevant, confirm that approval applies to the game and your region. Retailer lists and commercial arrangements can change, so an old list or a seller’s own claim is not enough.
Ubisoft, for example, recommends buying its games and content from the Ubisoft Store or an approved retailer: Ubisoft’s approved-retailer guidance. This is Ubisoft’s policy, not a universal list for every publisher. Use the relevant publisher’s own live information for the game you want.
A logo, a listing that says “official,” or the ability to redeem a key does not independently establish that the retailer is authorized.

Verify what the listing actually gives you
Before paying, match the listing to the game and the account where you plan to play it. Check the title, activation platform or launcher, edition, region, and any delivery or use restrictions. A key for the wrong platform or region may not work for you, even if the listing concerns the same game.
- Game and edition: Confirm the exact title and edition, including any stated extra content.
- Platform: Check which launcher or service accepts the key; a PC game key is not automatically interchangeable across platforms.
- Region: Read any region-lock or activation restrictions and make sure they cover your location.
- Delivery and terms: Note how the key will be delivered and what the seller says about replacement or refunds.
Steam warns that keys offered in player-to-player community trades may be for another game, fake, already used, or region restricted. Its warning is specifically about trading, so it should not be treated as proof that every commercial online retailer has those problems: Steam’s recommended trading practices.

Read the seller’s remedy terms before checkout
Find the seller’s written refund or replacement policy before paying. If a key is rejected, banned, or later revoked, the seller that took payment may be the party responsible for a remedy. Save the listing and its terms along with your order confirmation, order number, and any messages with the seller.
Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam and directs customers with a revoked key to the third-party seller: Steam’s guidance on revoked games. Ubisoft likewise tells buyers whose codes are banned to contact the retailer for a replacement or refund: Ubisoft’s guidance on banned CD keys.

Understand the difference between authorization and activation
Authorization, successful redemption, and lasting validity are separate questions. Steam says a publisher may revoke a key if it determines that the key was obtained fraudulently. In that situation, the game is removed from the account; Steam says the account itself is not restricted because of that revoked key. Ubisoft says codes obtained through an irregular process, such as from an unapproved retailer, may be banned.
So an initially working key does not prove that the seller was authorized or that the key’s origin was legitimate. The official guidance cited here explains possible outcomes but does not certify individual third-party stores or establish how often revocations occur.

Compare sellers using evidence, not a “safe” label
If more than one seller is available, compare the facts that affect your purchase and your options if something goes wrong:
- Whether the publisher currently names the seller as approved.
- Whether the listing matches your game, platform, edition, and region.
- How clear and usable the seller’s refund or replacement terms are.
- The total price, considered alongside authorization and recourse.
The official guidance cited here sets no universal price cutoff or cross-publisher seller-rating standard. A low price alone does not establish that a seller is illegitimate, just as a high price does not establish legitimacy.

What to do if the key is rejected or revoked
- Keep your evidence. Retain the receipt, order number, listing description, terms, and seller correspondence.
- Contact the seller promptly. Explain whether the key was rejected at activation or the game was removed later, and ask for the remedy promised in its terms.
- Use the platform’s guidance to understand what it can do. For an outside purchase, Steam says it cannot issue a refund; Ubisoft directs buyers with banned codes to the retailer.
