Unfrozen announced on October 9, 2025, that Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Early Access was moving to 2026, while releasing a free Steam demo the same day. The game has since entered Early Access: Steam lists its release date as April 30, 2026. The delay gave the team more time for testing, interface improvements, and unit redesigns in response to player feedback.
When did Olden Era come out?
The 2026 date was the target announced in October 2025, not the game’s current status. Steam now lists Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era as released in Early Access on April 30, 2026. Unfrozen is the developer and Hooded Horse is the publisher, according to the Steam game listing.

Why was Early Access delayed?
In its October 9, 2025 announcement, Unfrozen said the team was moving the Early Access release to 2026 to allow additional testing, improve the user interface, and redesign some units after considering community feedback. The announcement did not attribute the decision to a named individual. The same post said the demo was available immediately: Unfrozen’s announcement.
Is there a free Olden Era demo?
Yes. The Steam demo was released October 9, 2025, and Ubisoft described it as free with no playtime limit. It offers four factions—Temple, Dungeon, Necropolis, and Schism—and a tutorial. Steam lists three modes: Arena, Single-Hero, and Multi-Hero (Classic). Single-Hero and Multi-Hero each have three map templates, according to the Steam demo listing and Ubisoft’s anniversary recap.

What the demo lets you do
The demo listing describes a turn-based strategy game built around empire building, tactical battles, and RPG mechanics. Its listed activities include constructing a town, recruiting and upgrading units, hiring heroes, exploring for resources and points of interest, managing limited hero movement each turn, fighting army battles, and using hero magic. These are store-page descriptions, not a performance or gameplay assessment.
Published PC requirements
The demo’s listed requirements are for Windows 10 64-bit. Steam publishes the following minimum and recommended specifications; meeting them is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or experience.

What is included in Early Access?
Steam’s current Early Access disclosure describes a fully playable version with six factions, three modes in single-player and multiplayer, the opening act of the narrative campaign, a map editor, and self-contained scenarios. That is a broader current scope than the demo’s four listed factions.
What the full version is planned to add
The store page says the planned full version will add scenarios and map templates, improve the map editor, introduce an Underground map layer, and include all acts of the narrative campaign. The developers estimate about a year in Early Access, while noting that the duration could change in response to feedback. These are plans rather than fixed-date guarantees; Steam cautions that Early Access games are incomplete and may change.
Rank #3
- Bring hero-characters into battle as super-soldiers in your army
- More than 140 hours of gameplay and 6 unique campaigns
- 11 starting Hero classes, 37 advanced classes
- All-new magic system
- Control up to 8 armies
Demo or Early Access: which should you choose?
Choose the free demo if you want to sample the game’s four-faction selection and its listed modes before committing. Early Access is the option for the broader current offering, including six factions, multiplayer, the opening campaign act, and the editor. The demo’s no-playtime-limit description comes from Ubisoft’s October 2025 recap; Steam’s Early Access disclosure describes an evolving, incomplete game.
