Heroes of the Storm is worth trying if you want a team-focused MOBA built around varied map objectives, distinctive heroes, and shared progression rather than individual farming and an in-match item shop. Its dated patch notes show activity in 2025 and 2026, but they cannot promise what future support will look like. The free-to-play game is available through Battle.net.
What kind of MOBA is Heroes of the Storm?
Blizzard describes Heroes of the Storm as a free-to-play game featuring heroes from across its franchises, customizable talents and abilities, and multiple battlegrounds. Unlike a match centered on one repeating lane objective, each battleground asks teams to contest its own objectives, which can influence structures or the enemy Core. Blizzard’s official game page presents this map variety as a core part of the game.
How do progression and combat compare with other MOBAs?
TechRadar reviewer James Pickard, writing in September 2026, describes shared team experience and the absence of last-hitting for extra resources or an in-match shop. That changes what players track during a match: success is less about building an individual economy through farm and item purchases, and more about coordinating with teammates around fights, talents, and objectives. Pickard says matches generally last “a glorious 20 minutes or so,” an impression from the review rather than an official average; individual games can be shorter or longer. Read the TechRadar review.
This is a design trade-off, not an automatic advantage. Players who enjoy a tighter focus on team decisions may prefer it; players who value personal resource management and choosing items throughout a match may find those systems missing.

What do battleground objectives ask you to do?
Objectives vary by map, giving teams different reasons to rotate, contest territory, and time fights. Blizzard’s official examples include:
- Dragon Shire: activate shrines to control a Dragon Knight.
- Towers of Doom: capture altars to damage the enemy Core.
- Cursed Hollow: collect tributes.
- Sky Temple: capture sites that attack enemy fortifications.
These examples illustrate why map knowledge matters: the value and timing of a fight depend on the objective in play, not only on which team is ahead in a lane.

How much hero and role variety is there?
Blizzard groups the roster into six role categories: Tank, Bruiser, Support, Healer, Melee Assassin, and Ranged Assassin. Those labels help describe what heroes contribute to a team, while talents and individual abilities give players ways to shape a hero during a match. Role labels alone do not establish that every hero is equally easy to learn or equally strong.

That range offers options for practicing against AI, playing a single-lane ARAM-style mode, organizing custom games, or entering ranked Storm League. Mode availability can change: Blizzard’s December 2025 patch notes announced a change to Brawl availability beginning in January 2026, so check the game’s current listings rather than assuming a particular schedule. What do recent updates say about support?
Blizzard’s official notes document patches after the game’s earlier maintenance-mode period. The December 1, 2025 notes include map changes, a strengthened comeback system, hero balance changes, and bug fixes. A Blizzard forum announcement for April 20, 2026 reports a new mount, map updates, a major Arthas rework, and balance changes. These dated examples establish that changes were published at those times; they do not establish a guaranteed future update cadence.

- Try it if you want team-wide progression, objectives that differ across battlegrounds, and a roster spanning several role types.
- It may not suit you if individual last-hitting, personal farming economies, and in-match item builds are essential parts of the MOBA experience you want.
- If you are returning, look at the available modes and current patch information in-game or through Blizzard before planning around a specific Brawl schedule or expecting a particular pace of updates.
