hgprint.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called HomeGroup Printing Support. If Windows or an older application reports that hgprint.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What hgprint.dll is

hgprint.dll belongs to the Microsoft Windows operating system and is associated with the older HomeGroup printing and file-sharing infrastructure. Documented samples identify Microsoft Corporation as the publisher, and genuine samples have been digitally signed by Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A common recorded location is:

C:WindowsSystem32hgprint.dll

That location does not mean every current Windows computer should contain the file. Microsoft removed HomeGroup from Windows 10 version 1803. Older shared printers and files could still be accessed through other Windows features, but the HomeGroup component itself was no longer part of the normal modern experience. Microsoft explains this change in its HomeGroup removal announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is not a Visual C++ runtime. Installing a Visual C++ Redistributable solely because an error names hgprint.dll is usually unrelated.

Recorded versions and architectures

Public file records show hgprint.dll in several Windows generations. These records are useful for identifying the component, but they are not a complete list of every Windows build.

Architecture Recorded version Recorded size
64-bit 10.0.14393.0 0.22 MB
64-bit 10.0.10586.0 0.23 MB
32-bit 6.3.9600.16384 0.16 MB
32-bit 6.2.9200.16384 0.16 MB
32-bit 6.1.7601.17514 0.15 MB

Do not use this table to select a DLL for manual installation. The correct file depends on the installed Windows edition, build, architecture, servicing state, and the program requesting it.

Errors associated with hgprint.dll

You may see wording such as:

  • “The program can’t start because hgprint.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because hgprint.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading hgprint.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “hgprint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in hgprint.dll.”

These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing file, damaged Windows component, missing dependency, incorrect application reference, wrong architecture, or invalid registration can produce similar failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down the complete error message and the name of the program that displays it. That information will help you decide whether Windows or one particular application is responsible.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An incomplete update or servicing operation can leave protected Windows components unavailable.

Windows 11

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Start the affected program again.

Windows 10

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install the available updates.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

Microsoft documents the process in its guide to installing Windows updates.

If Windows Update fails, record the displayed error and continue with the repair commands below. Do not repeatedly restart without repairing the component store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest primary repair for a missing or damaged system copy of hgprint.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected files.

Run DISM first, then SFC.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Use these commands exactly:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window while the operation is running.

When DISM completes successfully, run:

sfc /scannow

SFC checks protected Windows files and attempts to repair incorrect or missing copies. Allow the scan to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.

Microsoft describes this DISM-before-SFC repair process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you prefer assistance identifying which system components need attention rather than repeatedly hunting through repair commands, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs repair; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft procedure above.

If DISM cannot find repair files

Windows normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable or damaged, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches your installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. A mismatched source can fail or produce an unsuitable repair.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Then restart.

If SFC says it found no integrity violations

That result means SFC did not detect a damaged protected file. It does not prove that the application is correctly configured. Continue with the application, antivirus, architecture, and dependency checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it could not repair some files

Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If SFC still cannot repair the files, inspect its details:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

This creates sfcdetails.txt on the desktop. The file can show which protected components SFC could not repair. If multiple Windows components are damaged, proceed to System Restore or an in-place Windows repair rather than copying individual DLLs.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection. It can also correctly remove a malicious file that was pretending to be a Windows component.

To review Microsoft Defender’s actions:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections involving hgprint.dll.

Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing. Restore it only when all of the following are true:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The detection is identified as a false positive.
  • The file is the genuine Microsoft system component.
  • The security product gives you a clear reason to trust it.
  • A current scan does not indicate broader compromise.

Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. Its guidance for Protection history in Windows Security explains how quarantine decisions work.

If you suspect malware rather than a false positive:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If compromise is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Microsoft provides instructions for Microsoft Defender Offline.

After removing a threat, repair Windows with DISM and SFC. A quarantined or altered system file should be restored through Windows servicing, not through an arbitrary downloaded copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one older program reports hgprint.dll, the application may contain an incorrect dependency, a private DLL reference, or an installer designed for an older Windows release. The application does not necessarily prove that the current Windows installation should contain the file.

Try the program’s built-in repair option first:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Choose Advanced options, Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the application provides.
  7. Restart Windows and test it.

If no repair option exists:

  1. Uninstall the application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the installer from the application’s original vendor or use original installation media.
  4. Install the program again.
  5. Apply the vendor’s updates.
  6. Test the program before restoring optional plugins or old add-ons.

If the application is a game, utility, or business program, reinstalling that specific program may be the definitive fix. Do not put hgprint.dll into the application folder unless the original vendor explicitly instructs you to do so for that exact release.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Windows architecture affects which DLL a program can load.

A 32-bit application normally uses 32-bit components, while a 64-bit application uses 64-bit components. On 64-bit Windows, the directories have special meanings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • C:WindowsSystem32 normally contains 64-bit system files.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files.

The names are confusing, so do not use the folder name alone to select a replacement.

A 32-bit program that tries to load a 64-bit DLL can report a bad image, entry-point, or module error. A program may also report “specified module could not be found” when hgprint.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded.

To identify the application architecture, check the application’s documentation or vendor support information. If only that application fails, repair or reinstall the application using the installer that matches its architecture. Do not mix files from different Windows versions.

Fix 6: Consider dependency and application-side failures

The message “specified module could not be found” is especially misleading. It can mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • hgprint.dll is absent.
  • hgprint.dll exists but is damaged.
  • A dependency required by hgprint.dll is absent.
  • The application is looking in the wrong directory.
  • The application expects a different architecture.
  • A required COM registration entry is invalid.
  • The application references an old HomeGroup component that is no longer present.

First confirm the exact location of any existing file through the application’s supported repair process or Windows servicing. Do not copy a file from another computer, because its build, architecture, signature, and dependencies may differ.

If Windows repairs successfully but the application still fails, test another Windows program. If other programs work normally, focus on repairing or replacing the affected application rather than reinstalling printer drivers or Visual C++ components.

Fix 7: Use Windows Features only for related optional components

Do not expect a missing HomeGroup feature to be restored through Turn Windows features on or off. HomeGroup was removed from Windows 10 version 1803, and current Windows versions do not provide a normal HomeGroup switch that reinstalls hgprint.dll.

You can still check optional Windows components when an application specifically requires one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:

text
optionalfeatures

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the available features.
  3. Enable only a feature required by the affected application.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable unrelated legacy features simply because an error names a DLL. If no relevant component is listed, return to DISM, SFC, and application repair.

Fix 8: Update printer software only when printing is also failing

hgprint.dll is related to HomeGroup printing, but a modern printer driver is not normally the cause of a missing Windows system DLL. Update or reinstall a printer driver only when you also have symptoms such as an unavailable printer, failed print jobs, or a device that Windows cannot identify.

Check the printer in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
  4. Right-click the affected printer.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if the driver changes.
  8. Test printing and then test the affected application.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the printer.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Confirm the removal.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the correct driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
  6. Add the printer again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.

If identifying the correct printer driver across several models and architectures is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, while manual installation from the printer manufacturer remains available.

If printing works and only one program reports hgprint.dll, do not treat a driver reinstall as the primary repair.

Should you use regsvr32?

Usually, no. regsvr32 does not restore a missing DLL, repair corrupted file contents, or replace a wrong-architecture binary. It is intended for DLLs that implement COM self-registration through an exported DllRegisterServer function.

A documented hgprint.dll sample exports:

  • DllRegisterServer
  • DllUnregisterServer
  • DllGetClassObject
  • DllCanUnloadNow

That means registration can apply to some builds, but it remains a secondary diagnostic step, not the normal missing-file fix.

After DISM and SFC have completed, and only if an application specifically reports a COM or registration problem, an administrator can test the 64-bit registration command:

%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%System32hgprint.dll

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may require the 32-bit registration tool:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%SysWOW64hgprint.dll

Use the path that matches the actual DLL and application architecture. A successful registration message does not prove that the application’s dependency problem is solved. An error from regsvr32 does not automatically mean the file is malware or that Windows must be reinstalled.

Microsoft documents the purpose and architecture behavior of regsvr32 and the requirements for COM self-registration.

What not to do

Do not download hgprint.dll from a random DLL website

A downloaded DLL may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or have a mismatched signature. It may also leave the real component-store or application dependency problem untouched.

Do not copy a downloaded file into:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • An application folder
  • A printer-driver folder

The safe sources for repair are Windows Update, DISM using a matching Microsoft installation source, System File Checker, and the original application installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables as a guess

hgprint.dll is identified as a Windows HomeGroup printing component, not as a Visual C++ runtime. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application’s vendor specifically requires a particular package and architecture.

Do not repeatedly register the DLL

Registration cannot create a missing file or repair a damaged component. Use regsvr32 only for a confirmed COM registration issue after servicing and application repair.

Do not assume the file must exist on Windows 11

Because HomeGroup was removed from later Windows releases, the absence of hgprint.dll on a current installation is not, by itself, proof of damage. The important question is which program is requesting it and whether that program is compatible with the installed Windows version.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or application change, System Restore may return system files and configuration to an earlier state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Review the affected programs.
  5. Select Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Last resort: repair or reset Windows

If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, security checks, application repair, and System Restore all fail, the Windows installation may have broader servicing damage.

Back up personal files first. Then choose the least destructive option supported by your Windows edition:

  • An in-place repair installation that keeps personal files and applications, when available.
  • A Windows reset that preserves or removes personal files according to the selected option.
  • A clean reinstallation when the system is severely damaged or compromise cannot be ruled out.

Use installation media that matches the installed edition, language, and architecture. A repair installation is preferable to manually replacing system DLLs because it repairs Windows as a component set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is hgprint.dll malware?

The filename itself is legitimate and identifies a Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name can still be forged or altered, so check its location, digital signature, antivirus history, and Windows servicing state rather than trusting the name alone.

Is hgprint.dll part of HomeGroup or printing?

It is described as HomeGroup Printing Support and belongs to the older HomeGroup printing infrastructure. It is not a Visual C++ runtime.

Why does an application request it if HomeGroup was removed?

A legacy application may still contain an old dependency or reference a component expected by an earlier Windows release. The error may also come from an application-side dependency rather than from a missing Windows file.

Should I reinstall the application?

Yes, especially when only one older application fails and DISM and SFC report no Windows corruption. Use the original vendor’s installer and choose a version compatible with your Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall the printer driver?

Only when printing or printer detection is also failing. A driver reinstall normally does not restore a missing Windows system DLL.

What if hgprint.dll exists but the program still will not start?

The named file may have a missing dependency, incorrect architecture, invalid COM registration, or a damaged application installation. Confirm the complete error, repair Windows, then repair or reinstall the affected program.

What if SFC repairs nothing?

That can mean the protected Windows files are intact. Continue with antivirus history, application repair, architecture checks, and dependency troubleshooting. SFC is not an application repair tool.

When should I use System Restore?

Use it when the problem began after a specific update, driver installation, or software change and a suitable restore point exists. Back up important data before making broader repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the newest version of hgprint.dll?

There is no single universal latest version. The correct build depends on Windows version, architecture, and servicing state. Let Windows repair its own component instead of selecting a version from a file listing.

Is regsvr32 the fix?

Not normally. It may apply to a confirmed COM registration problem because documented builds expose registration functions, but it cannot replace or repair the DLL. DISM and SFC come first.
