hidbthle.dll is a Microsoft Windows driver used by Bluetooth Low Energy input devices. If hidbthle.dll is missing or was not found, the safest repair is usually to fix Windows components or reinstall the affected Bluetooth driver, not to download a replacement DLL.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, record:

  • Which program shows the error: Windows itself, a game, a utility, or a device-related application
  • When it appears: during startup, after signing in, when pairing a device, or only when using a keyboard, mouse, touchpad, or controller
  • Your Windows edition and architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type
  • Whether the problem began after: a Windows Update, driver cleanup, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, upgrade, or system restore
  • Whether Bluetooth devices still work: test a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, touchpad, or controller if available
  • Whether Device Manager shows a warning icon: especially under Bluetooth and Human Interface Devices

Do not delete the error message before noting the exact wording. Common reported variants include:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • “The program can’t start because HidBthLE.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because hidbthle.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading hidbthle.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “hidbthle.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “HidBthLE.dll could not be loaded.”

The wording matters because “missing file,” “invalid file,” and “specified module could not be found” can describe different underlying problems.

What hidbthle.dll does

Microsoft identifies HidBthLE.dll as the in-box minidriver for Bluetooth Low Energy HID transport. Its full description is Bluetooth Low Energy GATT-compliant UMDF HID driver. UMDF is the User-Mode Driver Framework, which Windows uses to load certain device drivers outside the kernel.

The driver handles Human Interface Devices that communicate through Bluetooth HID over GATT. GATT stands for Generic Attribute Profile, the Bluetooth framework used to exchange structured data with low-energy devices. In practical terms, this can include:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy keyboards
  • Mice
  • Touchpads
  • Controllers
  • Other compatible input devices

The file is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or normal application library. Microsoft documents the transport relationship in its HID Transport Overview.

Windows support for this driver begins with Windows 8. Windows may use a related or newer UMDF binary internally on some builds, so the name shown in an error does not prove that a separate copy should exist in an application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official standalone hidbthle.dll redistributable. Windows supplies the driver through its servicing system and driver packages.

Do not assume a universal file path

Microsoft does not publish one universal current path, version, or file size for every Windows installation. The location varies with Windows version, architecture, driver packaging, and servicing state.

Older installations may keep the file in a protected UMDF or driver location. Modern Windows commonly stages driver files in the Driver Store and may use related filenames. Do not treat a path found in a third-party file listing as a universal inventory.

Why an ordinary program can report a Windows driver error

A program does not need to own hidbthle.dll to be the process that displays the error. Applications often initialize input, controller, Bluetooth, or device-enumeration components during startup. That activity can cause Windows to load the HID transport stack.

The program is therefore sometimes only the trigger. The damaged item may be:

  • The Windows component store
  • A Bluetooth adapter package
  • A Bluetooth HID device package
  • A dependency required by the driver framework
  • A system file removed or quarantined by security software
  • A device configuration left behind after an update or cleanup

If the error occurs when a game starts, reinstalling the game is relevant only when the game owns the failing file. It cannot repair a missing Windows inbox driver.

The main causes and their appropriate fixes

What changed Likely problem Appropriate repair
Windows update or upgrade Incomplete servicing or corrupted component store Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
Bluetooth stopped working Damaged adapter or HID package Device Manager reinstall and OEM driver
Antivirus detected a file Quarantine or security software interference Check Protection History and verify authenticity
Cleanup or driver-removal utility ran Removed or damaged package DISM/SFC, then reinstall the manufacturer driver
Several Windows files are missing System corruption or malware Defender scan followed by Windows repair
Error began immediately after a change Bad driver or system configuration System Restore
Windows repairs cannot complete Deeper servicing damage Matching repair source or in-place repair

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

Windows Update is the quickest supported way to restore a missing or damaged inbox driver package.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available quality, cumulative, and hardware-driver updates.
  5. Restart even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
  6. Test the program or Bluetooth device again.

If Windows reports that it is up to date, select Advanced options > Optional updates and inspect available driver updates. Install only drivers that match your computer or adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair is successful if the application opens without the error and Bluetooth HID devices enumerate normally. You can also open Device Manager and confirm that the affected Bluetooth or HID device no longer has a warning icon.

If the error returned immediately after an update, do not repeatedly reinstall random DLL files. Continue with DISM and SFC, then investigate the driver package.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use Microsoft’s recommended order: DISM first, SFC second. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for an extended period.
  2. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the original program and any Bluetooth input device.

Microsoft documents this System File Checker procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the result

SFC may report that:

  • No integrity violations were found: protected files appear intact, so investigate the Bluetooth package, dependencies, or application context.
  • Corrupt files were found and successfully repaired: restart and test again.
  • Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, use a matching repair source or an in-place Windows repair.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart into normal Windows and try again from an elevated Command Prompt.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation or network source with /Source and /LimitAccess in its Windows image repair guidance. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of checking recurring Windows-file and configuration problems: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the supported first-line repair for this Windows driver.

Fix 3: Reinstall the Bluetooth and HID device packages

Use this fix when Bluetooth devices stopped working, Device Manager shows a warning, or the error began after a driver update or cleanup.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Look for the Bluetooth adapter, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
  4. Expand Human Interface Devices.
  5. Identify any Bluetooth HID device or device with a warning icon.
  6. Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
  7. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows and test the device.

If updating does not help:

  1. Return to Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected Bluetooth adapter or HID device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are certain the package belongs to the affected device.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Allow Windows to redetect the hardware.
  8. Pair the Bluetooth device again if necessary.

Microsoft documents the process in Update drivers through Device Manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows does not reinstall the adapter correctly, download the Bluetooth, chipset, or system driver package from the computer manufacturer or the Bluetooth adapter manufacturer. Use the exact model and Windows version. Avoid generic DLL sites and unverified driver bundles.

Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale or mismatched drivers when manually sorting through Bluetooth, chipset, and HID packages is difficult; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required, and the hardware manufacturer remains the preferred source for an exact OEM package.

What success looks like

Device Manager should show the adapter without a warning icon. Bluetooth settings should allow devices to pair, and a keyboard, mouse, touchpad, or controller should respond normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, although an invalid path or unsigned copy can also indicate tampering.

  1. Open Start > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections and blocked items.
  5. Open an item related to HidBthLE.dll if one is listed.
  6. Check the reported file path and detection details.
  7. Restore or allow the file only if it is in a legitimate protected Windows location and its Microsoft signature can be verified.

To check a file manually:

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the suspected file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signer and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.

Do not restore a file downloaded from an untrusted source. If Protection History shows a suspicious copy outside the normal Windows driver structure, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

Microsoft explains quarantine and restore actions in its Protection History documentation.

Fix 5: Scan for malware if other system files are affected

Malware is not the most specific explanation for this error, but it becomes more important when several Windows files are missing, signatures fail validation, or unfamiliar processes are active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Choose Scan now.
  6. Remove or quarantine confirmed threats.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run DISM and SFC again after cleanup.

Do not copy a replacement DLL into a system directory while malware may still be present. A malicious process could replace it again or interfere with Windows servicing.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem started immediately after a driver installation, update, cleanup operation, or configuration change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next > Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore normally preserves personal files but rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guide.

Fix 7: Repair Windows without deleting your files

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, use a Windows repair reinstall rather than immediately performing a clean reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Select Reinstall now.
  4. Follow the prompts.
  5. Keep the option that preserves apps, files, and settings when offered.

Microsoft documents this repair reinstall option.

If that option is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Choose the option to keep personal files and applications. A clean reset should be a last resort after backing up important data.

Why downloading hidbthle.dll is the wrong fix

Random DLL download sites pages cannot reliably establish that a file matches your Windows build, architecture, servicing level, or driver package. A downloaded file may be:

  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • From a different Windows release
  • Missing required dependencies
  • Unsigned or modified
  • Incompatible with the installed UMDF framework
  • Placed in a directory Windows does not use for that driver

Manual copying can also break ownership, servicing, and signature relationships. It may remove the immediate message while leaving the Bluetooth package damaged.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Device Manager, and the exact Bluetooth or chipset package supplied by the PC or adapter manufacturer. There is no official standalone Microsoft download for this DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why regsvr32 normally does not apply

Do not use this command as a generic repair step:

regsvr32 hidbthle.dll

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A UMDF Bluetooth driver is loaded through Windows driver-framework and package infrastructure, not repaired by manually registering it as a COM component.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains registration behavior, but it does not recommend the command for repairing this driver.

32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows

A 32-bit program can display a system DLL error on 64-bit Windows even when the underlying issue is an incompatible dependency or damaged driver package. That does not mean you should place a random 32-bit DLL in System32, or a random 64-bit DLL in SysWOW64.

Repair Windows and the driver package instead. If the error occurs only in one older application, update or reinstall that application after Windows is repaired. Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributables may help a genuine runtime error, but it is not a primary fix for this Windows HID driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 legacy cases

HidBthLE.dll has existed since Windows 8. Microsoft documented a Bluetooth Low Energy HID memory leak affecting Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, with the historical fix delivered through update KB2919355. That issue involved freezing or memory consumption when using a Bluetooth LE device. It is distinct from the usual missing-DLL message.

On Windows 8 or 8.1:

  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.
  2. Check for and install available updates.
  3. Restart.
  4. Reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver through Device Manager.
  5. Run DISM and SFC if system files remain damaged.

The old platform is no longer the normal target for current Windows troubleshooting, so use manufacturer recovery media or supported upgrade guidance when servicing cannot complete.

Windows Features is not the repair location

Do not expect Turn Windows features on or off to restore hidbthle.dll. That control manages optional Windows components, not the inbox Bluetooth HID transport package.

  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.

There is no general Bluetooth HID checkbox that should be enabled to replace this driver. Changing unrelated features can create another problem without repairing the component store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final escalation checklist

If the error remains, check these points:

  • DISM completed without an unrepaired image error.
  • SFC completed and its result was recorded.
  • Windows Update has no pending restart or failed update.
  • Bluetooth and HID devices have no Device Manager warning icons.
  • The OEM Bluetooth or chipset package was installed for the exact computer model.
  • Protection History does not show a quarantined legitimate file.
  • Any suspected file has a valid Microsoft digital signature and a plausible protected Windows path.
  • A full Defender scan found no active malware.
  • System Restore was considered if the failure followed a recent change.
  • A matching repair source or in-place repair was attempted before a clean reset.

If only one application still fails after Windows and Bluetooth repair, reinstall that application and inspect its own files and dependencies. If multiple programs fail or several Windows system files are damaged, treat the problem as Windows servicing corruption rather than an application-specific missing DLL.

FAQ

Is hidbthle.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. Microsoft documents it as the in-box Bluetooth Low Energy HID transport driver included with Windows.

Do I need to download hidbthle.dll?

No. There is no official standalone redistributable. Repair Windows or reinstall the relevant Bluetooth driver package.

Does every hidbthle.dll error mean Bluetooth hardware is broken?

No. Similar messages can result from component-store corruption, a missing dependency, antivirus quarantine, an interrupted update, or an invalid file. Bluetooth hardware failure is only one possibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy the file into the program folder?

No. An application-folder copy can have the wrong architecture, signature, or dependencies and can hide the real driver-package problem.

Should I reinstall Visual C++?

Not as the first step. HidBthLE.dll is a Windows UMDF driver, not a Visual C++ runtime. Use Windows Update, DISM/SFC, and Device Manager first.

What if the file exists but says it is not designed to run on Windows?

Check its path and Microsoft digital signature. An invalid signature or suspicious location is more concerning than a simple missing file. Do not replace it manually; repair Windows and scan for malware.

Can System Restore remove my personal files?

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back drivers, settings, system files, and installed programs. Review the affected programs before confirming the restore.
