A hidden-gem game is overlooked by the audience being discussed; a cult classic has a devoted following that lasts over time. Those labels describe different things, so a game can be both—and neither is an official, mutually exclusive industry category.
What does “hidden gem” mean in gaming?
“Hidden gem” is primarily a discovery label. It describes a game that someone believes deserves more attention but that has escaped notice among a particular audience. The phrase is relative: a title may be well known on one platform, in one region, or among longtime fans while remaining unfamiliar to other players.

That discovery framing appears in how platforms and publications use the term. Steam’s Hidden Gem Highlights curator describes its purpose as “Unearthing overlooked Steam games across a wide variety of genres” (Steam curator). PlayStation Blog used a similar frame in its 2016 feature “23 Games You Might Have Missed in 2016” (PlayStation Blog).
What makes a game a cult classic?
“Cult classic” is mainly a legacy and audience label. It suggests a committed niche following that stays attached to a game over time, sometimes after limited mainstream success or wider recognition that arrived later. It is not simply another way to say “obscure”: the key idea is enduring fan attachment.

Reference sources cite EarthBound (1994), Psychonauts, and Alan Wake as games associated with cult followings (reference examples). GameSpot’s 2022 editorial list also discusses games that gained recognition after release (GameSpot’s examples). These are attributed examples, not a definitive ranking or a classification agreed on by every player.
How the labels differ—and where they overlap
| Question | Hidden gem | Cult classic |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label emphasize? | How overlooked or under-discovered the game is among a specified audience. | Whether the game has a passionate following that persists over time. |
| Does it require a lasting fan community? | No. The label can describe a discovery even before a durable following is established. | Yes. Enduring audience attachment is central to the term. |
| Can it change over time? | Yes. Broader discovery can make “hidden” less apt for a particular audience. | Yes. Recognition and the size or visibility of a following can develop over time. |
| Is it an official status? | No. It is an informal description. | No. It is an informal description, not an industry-awarded category. |
Because the labels ask different questions, a game can be both: it may remain overlooked by the broad public while sustaining a devoted niche community. EarthBound is cited as an example of a game with a cult following, but whether it is a “hidden gem” depends on whose awareness you mean and when you ask.

How to judge the labels for a specific game
Rather than treating the terms as scores, specify the audience and compare the game on four separate axes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Discovery: Is the title widely known among the players you mean, on the platform and in the region you are discussing?
- Following: Is there evidence of an engaged community that has stayed interested, rather than a short burst of attention?
- Recognition over time: Did attention remain concentrated in a niche, or grow after the game’s release?
- Availability: Can a player access the game now, and on which edition or platform? Availability depends on releases and preservation, not on whether a title is a cult classic or hidden gem.
Institutional recognition is a separate matter. The Strong’s World Video Game Hall of Fame fact sheet lists “icon-status,” “longevity,” “geographical reach,” and “influence” among its consideration criteria (The Strong’s criteria). Those criteria may illuminate how an institution evaluates a game’s significance, but Hall of Fame consideration is not the same as having a cult following.

Why a game’s reputation does not guarantee access
Being beloved by a niche or rediscovered by new players does not ensure that a game is easy to find or play. A 2023 study explainer from the Video Game History Foundation and Software Preservation Network reports that 87 percent of classic games released in the United States are out of print (study explainer). That figure concerns classic games in the United States overall; it is not a statistic specifically about cult classics or hidden gems.
