If an Airbnb host cancels your home reservation before check-in, Airbnb says you’re entitled to a full refund, including service fees, if you don’t rebook. You may first see booking credit; you can request the money back to your original payment method, and unused credit is automatically refunded there after 72 hours. Airbnb starts the refund when the reservation is canceled, but your bank determines when the funds appear.
Does Airbnb refund you if the host cancels?
For a home reservation canceled by the host before check-in, Airbnb’s guest guidance says you’re entitled to a full refund, including service fees, if you choose not to rebook. Airbnb’s Rebooking and Refund Policy for Homes, effective February 6, 2025, sets out the same entitlement.

This is different from canceling the reservation yourself. If the host cannot accommodate you, the host should cancel through Airbnb so the record reflects who initiated the cancellation and Airbnb can apply the relevant policy.
Does Airbnb refund to your card or give booking credit?
Airbnb may provide eligible guests with booking credit first so they can rebook promptly. You can request the refund to the original payment method instead. If you leave the credit unused, Airbnb says it will automatically refund it to that original method after 72 hours.

Check the cancellation notice and your Airbnb account for the options available on your reservation. Booking credit is not a requirement to accept: the policy allows you to request money back to the payment method used for the booking.
How long does an Airbnb host-cancellation refund take?
Airbnb says it initiates the refund as soon as the reservation is canceled. That does not mean the funds will post immediately: the arrival time depends on your bank or other financial institution. Airbnb’s cited guidance gives no universal number of days, so check with your payment provider if the refund has been initiated but has not appeared.

What if your Airbnb host asks you to cancel?
Do not cancel on the host’s behalf if they say they cannot host you. Airbnb’s Help Center guidance says, “If your host tells you they can’t accommodate your stay, don’t cancel for them.” Ask the host to cancel through Airbnb instead. If they pressure you to cancel, contact Airbnb support; if you have already canceled, contact support and explain what happened.

What changes if the host cancels after check-in?
The automatic full-refund rule for a host cancellation before check-in should not be applied to a disruption during a stay. Airbnb says an in-stay problem or host cancellation may result in a full or partial refund and rebooking assistance depending on the circumstances.
For a covered issue, Airbnb’s homes policy generally requires you to report it within 72 hours after discovering it and provide relevant evidence. The outcome can depend on the issue’s severity and impact, how much of the stay was affected, whether you leave the home, mitigating circumstances, and the evidence available. Report the problem promptly through Airbnb rather than assuming a full refund is automatic.

Check the policy for the booking type you actually made.
