Hideaki Anno is reported to be directing a new Space Battleship Yamato feature titled Space Battleship Yamato √2199, also rendered “Route 2199.” Reports name Yutaka Izubuchi as co-director and Studio Khara and Production I.G as animation production partners. No release date or distribution details have been announced in the reports.
What is Space Battleship Yamato √2199?
It is the reported title of a new feature in the long-running Space Battleship Yamato franchise. The title was disclosed in coverage dated October 6, 2026, which described the project as a film. The reports do not establish whether it is a sequel, reboot, or part of the existing remake-film sequence, so its place in the franchise continuity remains unclear.
The project is separate from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Anno is associated with Evangelion, but this announcement concerns a new Yamato production. Toy-People’s October 6 report describes it as the first animated collaboration between Studio Khara and Production I.G.
Who is working on the film?
Reports name Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi in the directing team, though the precise wording of their roles varies by outlet. Toy-People lists Anno as director, planner, and executive producer, with Izubuchi as co-director. A Polygon-syndicated report describes them as co-directors. The safest concise description is that Anno and Izubuchi are the reported directing team.

Studio Khara and Production I.G are identified as animation production partners. Toy-People also lists Mitsuhisa Ishikawa for planning and SHIN OFFICE ACADEMY for production. These are reported credits, rather than details confirmed here through an accessible official project announcement.
When will the new Yamato film be released?
No release date, distribution territory, streaming service, or home-video format is established in the October 6 reports. There is not enough information to say when or where viewers will be able to watch the film.
What was announced in 2024?
The recent coverage says Anno mentioned his involvement at a Space Battleship Yamato 50th-anniversary screening event in October 2024, before the √2199 title and reported credits were disclosed in 2026. Toy-People attributes to him the statement, “In short, I can finally make a new Yamato.”

The available reports do not clarify how √2199 connects to the ongoing remake-film sequence. It should not yet be described as a sequel, reboot, or installment in that sequence. Earlier works such as Space Battleship Yamato 2199 are separate franchise titles; their existence does not confirm the new film’s continuity or story.
