PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in the action-espionage game in mid-June 2026, according to Kojima. After three months searching for another partner, Kojima Productions chose Xbox. Microsoft and Kojima Productions announced on September 9, 2026, that they will publish PHYSINT together.
The change turns the story from a PlayStation homecoming into a platform and publishing switch. PHYSINT remains in development, but there is still no announced release date, price, retail edition or confirmed list of platforms.

What happened to Kojima’s PlayStation spy game?
PHYSINT was announced in January 2024 as Hideo Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre, made in collaboration with Sony and PlayStation. That arrangement ended unexpectedly. Kojima said PlayStation Studios notified Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel the project.

“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project,” Kojima said in comments reported by Variety on September 9.

Kojima Productions then spent three months looking for a new partner. Xbox became that partner, and Xbox’s official announcement on September 9 confirmed that the two companies will publish PHYSINT together.
What the Xbox deal actually confirms
The announcement establishes a new publishing relationship; it does not provide the launch information players normally expect from a finished game announcement.
| Question | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Who publishes PHYSINT? | Xbox and Kojima Productions will publish it together. |
| Is PlayStation still the partner? | No. PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in June 2026. |
| Is the game Xbox-exclusive? | Not confirmed. Xbox has not announced exclusivity in the cited announcement. |
| Will it release on PS5 or a future PlayStation console? | No PlayStation version has been announced, but no final platform list has been published either. |
| When does it launch? | No release date has been announced. |
| How much will it cost? | No price or retail edition has been announced. |
Kojima said the team remains committed to “redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world.” That describes the creative ambition, not a release schedule or technical specification.

Why did Kojima leave PlayStation?
The available account points to a business decision by PlayStation Studios rather than a publicly described creative dispute. Kojima has said the cancellation notice arrived unexpectedly. Neither the announcement nor his quoted comments explain why PlayStation cancelled the project, how much work had been completed, or whether the cancellation involved budget, strategy, scheduling or another internal factor.
After the cancellation, Kojima Productions evaluated new partners for three months before selecting Xbox. The decision gives the project a new publisher while leaving the studio’s creative leadership with Kojima Productions. The precise contractual division of control has not been disclosed.
Does this make PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive?
It is too early to call PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive. Xbox is the confirmed publishing partner, but the September 9 announcement does not identify every target platform. Publishing involvement alone does not establish whether a game will appear on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, cloud services, PlayStation hardware or other systems.

Players should therefore separate three different questions:
- Publisher: Xbox and Kojima Productions.
- Availability: no complete platform list has been confirmed.
- Timing: no launch window has been announced.
A future Xbox or Kojima Productions announcement would be needed to establish exclusivity, a PS5 or PS6 release, a PC version, or any other platform plan.
What happens to Kojima’s wider Xbox relationship?
Xbox described the partnership as extending beyond games into film and television. Its announcement also references the broader relationship with Kojima Productions, including OD. The statement does not provide release dates, distribution details or platform commitments for those projects.

That broader scope matters because Xbox is presenting the arrangement as a long-term creative partnership rather than a single replacement publishing contract. It still does not change the limited facts currently available about PHYSINT itself.

Kojima’s most relevant prior physical PlayStation product is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, a PS5 game. It is a separate title from PHYSINT and does not indicate that the new action-espionage project will return to PlayStation.

What players should watch next
- Platform confirmation: Look for an official list rather than assuming Xbox exclusivity or a PlayStation port.
- Release timing: A date or window will show how far development has progressed after the partnership change.
- Commercial details: Price, editions, physical availability and preorder information have not been announced.
- Creative details: Kojima Productions has not yet published a complete explanation of the game’s story, cast, gameplay systems or production status in connection with the Xbox deal.
The bottom line on Kojima and PlayStation
PlayStation did cancel its involvement in PHYSINT, but Kojima is not returning to PlayStation with the project. Xbox is now the announced publishing partner after Kojima Productions’ three-month search. Until the companies reveal platforms and launch plans, claims that PHYSINT is definitely an Xbox exclusive—or definitely coming to PS5 or PS6—go beyond what has been confirmed.
