It can describe an improvised shelter, a home that aided people escaping slavery, a fortified farmhouse or a network of underground rooms and passages. Their purposes and histories matter more than any single design.
What is a hideout?
“Hideout” is a broad description, not one precise architectural category. It can refer to a place where people conceal themselves, seek refuge, or carry out protected activity. A temporary shelter, a safe house, a fortified dwelling and a tunnel system may all fit the word in context, but they are not interchangeable.
To understand a particular hideout, ask who used it, what they needed it for, how it was built, and what evidence survives. Historical examples can illuminate the pressures people faced; they should not be treated as construction plans or present-day safety advice.
What kinds of hideouts have existed?
Improvised shelters at Andersonville
During the American Civil War, prisoners at Andersonville improvised shelter in harsh conditions. The National Park Service documents several forms in prisoner diaries and memoirs: blankets draped over a ridgepole, cloth lean-tos on pole frames, blanket teepees, vertical pits, dugouts that extended sideways into small caves, mud-brick structures roofed with fabric or clothing, and huts made from split pine boards. Pine boughs, overcoats, blankets, rubber blankets and ripped shirts also served as roofing or lashings; some prisoners used hand-carved shovels hardened by fire. These were desperate adaptations to captivity, not evidence of safe or suitable shelter designs.

Safe houses on the Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a covert, sometimes informal network of routes, safe houses and resources used by enslaved African Americans seeking freedom. Assistance could be spontaneous or deliberately organized, and the network’s secrecy means its operation is not fully documented. The National Park Service describes homes used as stops and says Bethel AME Church in Springtown, New Jersey, offered lodging to freedom seekers. The NPS account, drawing on oral histories, says Harriet Tubman used that station from 1849 to 1853. That oral-history attribution should be distinguished from the broader historical record and from later popular imagery.
Cu Chi’s connected underground system
At Cu Chi in Vietnam, shelters that began as concealed refuges developed into an interconnected underground system. UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre says the original secret shelters date to 1946 and describes the tunnels’ evolving roles in shelter, defense, transport and everyday activity. The system included living, meeting, medical, storage and water-related spaces. UNESCO identifies approximately four kilometres of preserved tunnels at Ben Duoc and Ben Dinh as visitor sites. Its entry reports more than 27 million visitors as of 2025; that is a time-specific visitor figure, not a measure of the tunnel system itself.

Fortified farmhouses at Housesteads
At Housesteads in northern England, English Heritage describes border reiver communities living in fortified farmhouses during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. One farmhouse was built into the Roman south gate. Nearby Busy Gap served as a gathering place for cattle herding or assembling raiding parties. This is an example of a fortified dwelling within a particular borderland history, not a general model of a safe house.
Early hearths and shelter
Not every early refuge can be identified as a hideout in the modern sense. The Smithsonian Human Origins Program says the earliest hearths are at least 790,000 years old and notes that some researchers think cooking may date back more than 1.5 million years. Hearths and shelters offered places for early humans to gather, eat and socialize. Those estimates concern hearths and possible cooking, not the age of hideouts as a category.

Why is “shebang” associated with Andersonville?
Popular accounts often use “shebang” for Andersonville prisoner shelters, but the National Park Service cautions against treating it as the exclusive or typical term. In the postwar testimony it reviewed, the word appears four times across approximately 1,200 pages, and it was virtually absent from most of the prisoner diaries and memoirs examined. The NPS suggests that MacKinlay Kantor’s 1955 novel Andersonville helped popularize the term.

Comparing unlike hideouts is more useful when the focus is on function and context than on a supposed “best” design.
