High On Life 2 Expands Its World, but Its Humor Still Divides

Skateboarding gives High On Life 2 a more distinctive way to move through its comedy-shooter world. Reviews find tonal changes, but disagree on how well the jokes land.

High On Life 2 gives its comedy shooter a more substantial traversal hook: skateboarding is a central way to move through its world, not just a cosmetic extra. Whether the sequel’s humor is an improvement is less settled. PC Gamer found a more restrained, sincere tone than in the first game, while GameSpot praised its sharp, topical moments but said jokes can become drawn out and repetitive. That mix makes “more refined” a matter of taste, not a clear-cut upgrade.

What is High On Life 2?

Squanch Games’ sequel to High On Life (2022), High On Life 2 is presented on Steam as a single-player comedy action-adventure and shooter. It launched on February 13, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with day-one availability through Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Play Anywhere support, according to Xbox Wire. Steam and the PlayStation Store also list February 13, 2026, as the release date. Listings and availability can vary by region.

The sequel’s clearest gameplay expansion is skateboarding. Steam includes skateboarding among the game’s tags, and Xbox Wire’s launch feature describes skating as part of how movement, combat and narrative beats connect. That makes the board a traversal feature with a role in the game’s pacing, rather than an incidental visual flourish. The design rationale in Xbox Wire is the studio’s account of its intentions, not independent proof of how well every sequence works.

Does skateboarding make the sequel better?

It gives the game a distinct way to link spaces and encounters. In the Xbox Wire launch feature, the developers discuss skating in relation to movement, combat and story moments. That suggests the sequel is trying to make traversal part of the comedy-shooter rhythm, rather than leaving the player to move between jokes and fights by conventional means.

High on Life 2 - Xbox Series X
  • FEATURES BLAST your way through enemies with an arsenal of charismatic alien firepower in high-octane hyperactive combat. Kickflip alien cops in the face and grind your way to freedom with your brand new SKATEBOARD. Get up close and personal with an eccentric cast of bizarre and subversive lifeforms voiced by an ALL-STAR COMEDY CAST. Wreak havoc at the galaxy’s biggest convention, an alien zoo for humans, and a luxury futuristic cruiseliner on your cosmic quest to TAKE DOWN BIG PHARMA.

Whether that change improves the experience depends on whether you enjoy having movement folded into the action. The available sources establish skateboarding as a major part of the sequel’s identity; they do not establish that it makes every combat encounter or joke work better. A useful way to judge the change is to ask whether you want the sequel to alter how you travel through its world, not merely repeat the original’s format.

Is High On Life 2’s humor more refined?

Reviews point to a tonal adjustment, but not a universally successful one. In its February 13 review, PC Gamer described the sequel’s comedy as more restrained and more open to sincerity than the first game’s deliberately cruel moments. That is evidence of a different comedic register, not proof that the jokes are consistently funnier.

  • Superheroic Side Hustles - Explore Santa Destroy on Travis’ Demzamtiger to pick up odd jobs, from Coast Guard missions to toilet cleaning, then hit the road to unique locales like Neo Brazil and Thunderdome to keep the cash rolling in
  • Bolder, Badder, and Better Than Ever - Thanks to sharper visuals, No More Heroes 3 has never looked better; Add in improved load times and better responsiveness, and you’ll be dishing out eye-popping ultra-violence in no time

GameSpot’s February 19 review found the writing funny, sharp and topical at its best, but said bits can run too long and become repetitive. The two judgments fit together: the sequel may temper some of the original’s harsher tone without solving the pacing problem that comes with keeping a joke going past its natural end. Reviews reflect individual critics’ responses, so players who enjoy extended, referential comedy may react differently.

How does the game try to make comedy part of play?

In an Xbox Wire interview, narrative director Alec Robbins described the team’s approach to selecting jokes: “If it makes us laugh, nine times out of ten it makes it into the game.” He also discussed an aim to tell jokes with the player, rather than only to the player. That is a useful lens for thinking about comedy designed to happen alongside active play, but it describes the studio’s creative intent—not a guarantee that every bit lands or fits the pace of combat.

  • REVENGE YOUR WAY: Choose your own play-style; brute force, blazing guns or stalk-and-kill tactics, to tear down the Italian Mafia.

Who is High On Life 2 for?

The sequel is most likely to suit players interested in a single-player shooter that treats comedy as a central part of its identity and adds skateboarding to its traversal. If the original’s humor put you off, PC Gamer’s description of a more restrained, sincere tone suggests a change worth noting; GameSpot’s criticism of repetition is a reason not to assume that change will address every frustration. If you mainly want a conventional shooter or dislike long comedic bits, the available reviews do not suggest the humor has been removed from the experience.

The ESRB rates High On Life 2 M for Mature 17+, citing blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. See the ESRB ratings information for rating details.
