Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to Switch 2 with magnets, can act as mouse controllers, and add HD Rumble 2 and a C Button for GameChat. The key caveat is that these capabilities do not work universally: mouse controls and play styles depend on compatible software, while GameChat has account, online-service, and regional requirements.
What’s new about Joy-Con 2?
Joy-Con 2 is designed for Nintendo Switch 2. Compared with the original Joy-Con, Nintendo’s announced changes include magnetic attachment, mouse controls, HD Rumble 2, and a C Button on the right controller. These are hardware capabilities; whether a particular game uses them depends on that game’s supported features and play styles.

Nintendo announced Switch 2 for June 5, 2025; that was the announced launch date, not a statement about current availability. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page and April 2, 2025 announcement describe the controller features.
How do the mouse controls work?
Either Joy-Con 2 can function as a mouse when a game supports that control mode, and Nintendo says both can be used simultaneously. Nintendo also lists mouse control for the Switch 2 HOME Menu and applications including Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online. This does not mean every game supports mouse input.

Choose a suitable surface
Nintendo recommends a desk, table, or similarly flat surface, while noting that responsiveness can vary with the surface. Some fabrics may not work properly, and rubbing the controller on fabric can cause color fading. The Joy-Con 2 strap can make mouse use more comfortable, and some games may require it; Nintendo says the strap is not required in every case.
What are the play modes?
Joy-Con 2 can remain attached for handheld play or connect wirelessly for tabletop play. In tabletop mode, the controllers may be held together vertically or used separately horizontally, depending on the game and its supported play style. The mouse feature adds another way to hold and use a controller, but it does not change a game’s compatibility requirements.

What does the C Button do?
The C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat after setup. Nintendo’s US features page says online features, including GameChat, require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability and terms vary by country. Video chat also requires a compatible USB-C camera. Check Nintendo’s features page for applicable service conditions.
Will Joy-Con 2 or original Joy-Con work across both consoles?
Compatibility differs depending on whether you mean wireless pairing, physical attachment, or accessory fit.

Wireless compatibility does not guarantee that every Switch game or controller feature works identically on Switch 2. Nintendo’s compatibility notes explain the distinctions between supported games, controllers, and accessories: Switch 2 compatibility information.
How long does Joy-Con 2 take to charge, and how long does the battery last?
Nintendo UK currently lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge and up to 20 hours of continuous use. These are product specifications, not results from a published test; Nintendo says actual battery life varies with the software and actions used. The FAQ page does not display a publication year. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 can be charged through the Switch 2 console or the separately sold Joy-Con 2 charging grip. Joy-Con 2’s new features are most relevant to Switch 2 players whose games use mouse controls or HD Rumble 2, and to people who want GameChat access from the right controller. If you rely on original Switch hardware or accessories, compatibility matters more: original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but it cannot attach to the console, while Joy-Con 2 does not work with the original Switch.
