If High On Life is crashing, showing “Fatal Error,” or closing at startup, start by identifying where you play and checking that the game is updated for that platform. On Windows, compare your PC with Steam’s published requirements. Squanch Games has documented historical crash and performance fixes for the original game, but the available official notes do not identify one cause or a universal fix for every crash.
First, identify the platform and version
A crash on an installed Windows, Xbox, or PlayStation game is different from an interruption while streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Record the platform, the game’s installed update or build if available, when the crash occurs, and the exact error text. Update the game through the platform’s normal update process before troubleshooting further.
Microsoft’s listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and handheld as ways to play High On Life. It currently describes cloud access through Game Pass Premium and Ultimate; availability and subscription details can change. If you are playing in the cloud, note whether the stream disconnects or the game itself reports an error, since those are different problems. See the Xbox listing.
On Windows, compare your PC with Steam’s requirements
Steam publishes the following specifications for the original High On Life. They are a baseline for comparison, not an independent performance test or a guarantee that meeting them will prevent crashes. Steam’s High On Life technical-issue page and system requirements also identify Squanch Games as the official support provider.

If your PC falls below a listed minimum, that is a concrete compatibility gap to report to support; it does not establish that the gap is the cause of a particular “Fatal Error.” Steam’s SSD recommendation is not evidence that installing an SSD fixes crashes.
What the official patch notes establish
Squanch Games’ original-game Patch 01 Build notes list “General crash and progress blocker fixes including bad respawns in Douglas Mission and Jetpack tutorial.” They also describe PC performance improvements across different hardware configurations, improved performance on Xbox One and Xbox Series, and better detection of recommended default video-quality settings on PC. These are historical fixes; the notes do not say that every crash occurring now is resolved.

The developer’s release-notes archive separately lists the original game’s PlayStation Day 1 patch as version 1.030.00, with performance improvements and general stability fixes. The archive also contains many 2026 crash-fix entries for High On Life 2. Those entries concern the sequel, not the original game, and should not be treated as fixes for it.
Why there is no universal “Fatal Error” fix
The official material cited here does not diagnose the cause of an individual PC crash or prescribe a universal remedy. It does not establish that a particular graphics driver, graphics API, overlay, or hardware component is responsible. Avoid changing several settings at once or rolling back a driver based only on an unrelated player report; that makes it harder to tell what changed and may introduce a separate problem.

No official crash-rate or failure-rate statistic is published in these sources, so search phrases such as “High on Life crashing” and “crashes at start” are not evidence that a specific issue is widespread.
