Highguard was labeled “Mostly Negative” on Steam the day after its January 26, 2026 launch. That was an early snapshot, not its lasting rating: Steam’s page later showed “Mixed,” and now says the game is no longer available in the store. Wildlight Entertainment announced that the servers would shut down after March 12, 2026.

What the launch-period Steam reviews showed

On January 27, 2026, TechRadar reported that Steam listed 13,363 negative and 6,027 positive reviews for Highguard, for 19,390 reviews combined, and labeled the game “Mostly Negative.” These are historical launch-period figures, not the game’s current review totals. TechRadar’s January 2026 report also cited SteamDB’s launch-day peak of 97,249 concurrent Steam players.

Those numbers describe different things. The concurrent-player peak measures how many people were playing on Steam at the same time; Steam reviews record the sentiment of users who chose to review the game. Neither figure, by itself, establishes whether the game was a commercial or long-term success.

Why the game’s design may have been hard to read at first

Highguard was free-to-play and built around a team-based raid-shooter loop rather than a straightforward deathmatch. Steam described teams of three gathering gear and resources, competing over a Shieldbreaker, then breaching an opposing base to attack its generators or anchor stone. Steam’s store page now says the title is no longer available there.

Before launch, lead designer Mohammad Alavi described the game as a multi-phase, 3v3 tug-of-war. In a PC Gamer prelaunch interview and hands-on report, Alavi said, “Honestly, we don’t need [player counts] to be super huge in order to be successful.” PC Gamer’s reporter found the loop complex and said the hands-on session did not leave them eager to play again; that is one journalist’s reaction, not a representative explanation for Steam users’ reviews.

Wildlight CEO Dusty Welch later acknowledged that the reveal could have explained the game better. In TechRadar’s January 2026 interview, he said: “I think, ultimately, we could have made a different trailer – a better trailer that wasn’t about entertaining, which is what we think [The Game Awards] was about. We could have made something that did a better job of highlighting the unique loop of the game. So that’s on us. We take that, but the team is resilient.”

How the rating and game changed after launch

Steam’s page snapshot crawled October 6, 2026 showed a “Mixed” label, with 46% positive among 29,865 English reviews. That later snapshot should not be substituted for the January launch-period rating. It is also a page snapshot rather than a permanent total. Steam’s listing includes the current availability notice.

In the first days after launch, Wildlight added a 5v5 raid mode in response to complaints about map scale and match pacing, according to GamesRadar’s report. GamesRadar also reported that Steam reviews had reached roughly 41% positive and the rating had shifted to “Mixed” at that point. This was a short-term update and rating snapshot, separate from Steam’s later October page figures.

Highguard’s shutdown and what the numbers do—and don’t—explain

On March 3, 2026, Wildlight announced that Highguard would go offline after March 12. The studio said more than two million players had entered the game, but that it had not built a sustainable player base to support it long term. Game Developer quoted the studio’s statement: “Despite the passion and hard work of our team, we have not been able to build a sustainable player base to support the game long term.” Read Game Developer’s report on the shutdown announcement.

The available reporting does not establish one cause for the negative launch reviews: it does not provide a representative breakdown showing that performance, balance, review-bombing, or any other single factor drove the score. Nor does the shutdown, which came later, prove that the launch rating caused the game’s closure. The supported picture is narrower: Highguard drew a Mostly Negative Steam label in its launch-period snapshot, received some post-launch changes, and ultimately did not retain a player base its developer considered sustainable.
