If High On Life is stuttering or feeling delayed on PS5, start by checking for game and system updates, then restart and compare it with another game. These steps can help isolate common causes, but PlayStation’s guidance is general troubleshooting—not confirmation of a current High On Life-specific performance bug or a guaranteed fix.
First, identify what “lag” looks like
Frame drops or uneven motion, controls that respond late, brief pauses while something loads, and a PS5 that feels slow across menus are different symptoms. Note when it happens and whether it affects only High On Life or other games too; that distinction helps determine whether to focus on the game or the console.
PlayStation lists High On Life as a one-player game with offline play enabled, so a delayed response should not automatically be treated as an online-server problem. Its PlayStation Store listing identifies Squanch Games, Inc. as publisher and July 22, 2023 as the PS4/PS5 release date; it also notes that the PS5 may require current system software: PlayStation Store: High On Life.
Try these seven troubleshooting steps in order
1. Check for a game update
- From the PS5 home screen, highlight High On Life.
- Press the Options button on the controller and choose Check for Update.
- If an update is available, install it, then launch the game and see whether the symptom changes.
PlayStation’s update instructions explain how to check for game updates on PS5: How to check for updates on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles. An update check is a sensible first step, but the available official guidance does not identify a particular High On Life patch as a lag fix.

2. Update PS5 system software
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose the option to check for an update. Install one if available and follow the on-screen prompts. 3. Fully restart the console
Restart the PS5 from its power menu rather than just closing and reopening the game. Once the console has restarted, launch High On Life and revisit the same scene or situation where you noticed the problem. PlayStation includes restarting among its troubleshooting steps for certain game-start issues, though that does not establish it as a specific remedy for this game’s performance.

4. Compare with another game
Play a different PS5 game for a few minutes and watch for the same kind of stutter or delay. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a prescribed High On Life fix.
- If other games behave normally: record that the issue appears limited to High On Life, along with when it occurs. That detail may help when reporting the problem to the game’s developer or support.
- If several games or the PS5 interface also feel slow: treat it as a broader console issue and follow PlayStation’s general troubleshooting guidance.
5. Reinstall the game only after simpler checks
If updates and a restart have not helped and the problem appears limited to High On Life, deleting and reinstalling it is a later troubleshooting option. Before deleting, check that your save data is safe and that any relevant cloud sync has completed. PlayStation recommends reinstalling for certain game-start problems, but its instructions do not promise that reinstalling will resolve lag: PS5 Error Code CE-109573-5 – Help & Support.

6. Consider Safe Mode database rebuilding as escalation
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance lists rebuilding the database through Safe Mode for certain game-start or update issues. It is not presented as a performance optimizer or a proven fix for High On Life stuttering. If you choose this route, follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions carefully: PS5 Error Code CE-109573-5 – Help & Support.
7. Contact support if the problem persists
If multiple games are affected, the PS5 is behaving erratically, or the issue continues after appropriate troubleshooting, contact PlayStation Support for console-level help. If only High On Life is affected, include that comparison when contacting the game’s developer or support. Lag by itself does not establish that the PS5 has a particular hardware fault.
