A hockey goalie is the player whose primary job is to protect the net and stop shots. Skaters play forward or defense, moving the puck and contributing to both offense and defense. Goalies wear specialized protective gear and have distinct privileges and restrictions under NHL rules; the details can differ in youth, amateur, international, and recreational leagues.
What does a goalie do in hockey?
The goalie—also called the goaltender or goalkeeper—defends the net. The central task is to stop the opposing team from scoring by blocking or catching shots and controlling rebounds. A goalie may also move the puck or help start a play, but the role is not the same as a skater’s.

Each team normally has one goalie on the ice at a time. Teams can remove the goalie for an extra skater in certain situations, but that player remains a skater under the rules; taking the goalie off the ice does not give a replacement goalie privileges.
What do skaters do?
Skaters are the players on the ice who are not acting as the goalie. They are generally organized as forwards and defensemen. Their responsibilities overlap: both groups can handle the puck, attack, defend, and support teammates.

Forwards
Forwards commonly focus on creating scoring chances, carrying or passing the puck into the attacking zone, and pressuring opponents. They also have defensive responsibilities, such as helping regain possession and covering opposing players.
Defensemen
Defensemen commonly work to prevent the opposition from getting clean chances near their net, disrupt attacks, and move the puck toward teammates. They can also join the attack and take shots. These are broad role descriptions, not rules that limit where a skater may go.

Hockey goalie vs. skater at a glance
| Category | Goalie | Skater |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Protect the net and stop shots; may also help move the puck. | Play forward or defense roles and contribute to both offense and defense. |
| Equipment | Specialized protective gear, including a mask, leg pads, and chest-and-arm protection. | Standard player equipment and a player stick; exact requirements depend on the league. |
| Rules | NHL rules give goalies distinct privileges and restrictions. | A skater does not gain goalie privileges simply because the team has substituted that player for its goalie. |
What equipment does a hockey goalie wear?
Goalie equipment is designed for the different job and exposure to shots. Common examples include a mask, leg pads, and a chest-and-arm protector. A goalie also uses specialized gloves and a goalie stick. Skaters use player equipment and a player stick; the table above is a broad comparison, not a complete equipment checklist for every league.

The NHL’s 2024-25 Official Rules, Section 3 – Equipment specify that leg pads must be anatomically proportional and size-specific, with detailed limits and measurement methods. The NHL and NHLPA described the aim of chest-and-arm equipment rules as keeping protection fitted to a goalie’s body without creating unnecessary puck-blocking area. In a September 17, 2018 NHL.com report, then-NHL vice president of hockey operations Kay Whitmore said: “The chest and arm protector worn by each goalkeeper must be anatomically proportional and size-specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper.” Whitmore also said, “We’ve tried to remove equipment from areas there’s no body part behind.” The report quotes Mathieu Schneider, then special assistant to NHLPA executive director Don Fehr, saying: “We’re trying to come up with rules and guidelines that don’t give players a distinct advantage because of their equipment.” (NHL.com, September 17, 2018.)
For a player choosing gear, fit, age, and the applicable league’s requirements matter. These NHL rules do not establish that any particular brand or model is suitable or approved for every player.

How do NHL rules treat goalies differently?
The NHL rulebook distinguishes a goalkeeper from a skater, including through goalie-specific puck-handling rules. NHL explanations cover both goalkeeper interference and handling the puck. For examples of those concepts, see the NHL’s Video Rulebook: Goalie Interference and Video Rulebook: Handling Puck, both dated September 23, 2024.

Goalie-specific restrictions are not simply a general ban on goalies touching or playing the puck. The particular circumstances and location matter under NHL rules. The NHL’s 2025-26 reference tables, for example, list participating in play beyond the center red line and playing the puck in a restricted area among goalkeeper-specific penalty examples (Official Rules 2025-2026, Reference Tables). These are examples tied to that edition, not a complete account of every goalie rule or a substitute for checking the applicable season’s wording.

The NHL Video Rulebook page links to the 2026-27 Official Rules. Consult that season’s text for exact current wording. Youth, amateur, international, and recreational competitions may use different rules, so NHL examples should not be assumed to apply in another league.
Which role should a beginner try?
The roles call for different priorities. A skater spends the game moving around the ice and taking part in puck battles, passing, defending, and attacking. A goalie focuses on the net and relies on specialized equipment and techniques for facing shots. A beginner should consider which role sounds more appealing, then ask a coach or league organizer about age-group rules, required equipment, and fit before choosing gear.
