Which house should you choose in Hogwarts Legacy?
Choose based on house identity, common-room appeal, or the kind of character you want to role-play. The official Hogwarts Legacy FAQ confirms that players choose a house at the start. A house is not a combat class: a recent beginner guide says house choice does not restrict talents or spells, and the FAQ describes mixing and matching spells to shape combat style.

Can you change your house during the Sorting Ceremony?
If you link a Harry Potter Fan Club account, its sorted house becomes the default selection. WB Games support says you can modify that selection before the Sorting Ceremony ends. The same support page says Patronus information does not carry into the game. See WB Games account-linking support.

Is account linking required?
No. Linking a Harry Potter Fan Club account and a WB Games account is optional. WB Games says the link unlocks a Beaked Skull Mask and House Fan-atic School Robe, and lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Epic Games as eligible platforms.

What should you do first?
- Choose your house and begin the main quests. Let the story introduce the core systems rather than trying to clear every area on your first visit.
- Experiment with a small spell rotation. Notice which spells and defensive tools you use most; use that preference to guide later talent choices.
- Replace gear when better pieces appear. Compare the new piece’s stats with what you have equipped, and sell weaker items when convenient.
- Complete Merlin Trials when they fit your exploration. A recent beginner guide recommends them as a way to build gear storage capacity through exploration challenge tiers.
- Use the Room of Requirement once it becomes available. Treat it as a preparation space and tailor it to what you need. The official FAQ describes the room as a way to customize and develop abilities.
The recommendation to follow the main quests before attempting a broad map clear is a practical strategy, not a requirement. A beginner guide published August 11, 2026, recommends returning to locations when you have the spells or tools needed to explore them.
What talents should you get first?
There is no source-established universally best early talent build. The official FAQ confirms that talents and skills are part of progression and that world challenges award experience. Build around spells you cast often
Prioritize upgrades that support the spells in your regular rotation. The official FAQ says spells can be mixed and matched to define combat style, so experiment before committing to a narrow plan. You do not need to copy a house-specific build.

The beginner guide also recommends useful spell-set capacity and defensive options. These are flexible priorities: more room for the spells you rely on can make switching less disruptive, while defensive tools can suit players who want more room to recover or react. Choose according to how you play, not an unsupported ranking of exact talents.

Equip better drops and sell obsolete pieces
A recent beginner guide recommends replacing weaker gear with better-stat drops and selling old pieces regularly. If you like an item’s appearance, use appearance customization rather than keeping an obsolete piece solely for its look. The official FAQ confirms gear can be upgraded and specialized, but does not specify that every old item should be retained or sold.

Fit Merlin Trials into your route
The beginner guide recommends completing available Merlin Trials as exploration challenge tiers can increase gear storage. The official FAQ confirms the broader gear system, but the cited passage does not give inventory-slot counts or the exact reward sequence. Treat Trials as a useful exploration goal, not a promise of a specific number of extra slots.
Do not try to finish every region immediately
Exploration is easier to manage when you return to places as your toolkit expands. The beginner guide advises against clearing the whole map at the outset; this leaves room to follow the story and revisit obstacles when you have the relevant spells or tools.
