Hogwarts Legacy supports both autosaves and manual saves, and it gives you multiple character runs rather than forcing every new house choice into one file. The house you choose at the beginning is not a mid-game setting you can freely change, so starting another character is the practical way to experience a different house. Your decisions do matter in selected quests and story moments, but the official FAQ explicitly says there is no morality system and the game does not turn every conversation into a major branching path.
For planning purposes, think of the game as several parallel playthroughs with limited, selective consequences. A Steam Community discussion quoting a Warner Bros. Games support response reports four character slots, with five autosave slots and ten manual-save slots per character. Those exact limits are secondary-source figures rather than a currently verified, platform-wide specification, so check the save screen on your edition before relying on them.

How Hogwarts Legacy saves your progress
The game uses two kinds of progress records: automatic saves made by the game and manual saves you create yourself. Warner Bros. Games Support confirms that autosaves occur at key moments and that players can create save files manually. That combination is useful, but the two systems serve different purposes.

Autosaves are a safety net, not a complete decision archive
An autosave records progress at selected points during play. It is designed to protect you from losing substantial progress if the game closes unexpectedly or you stop playing without making a manual save. Because the game controls when those records are made, an autosave may not preserve the exact moment before a choice you want to reconsider. It is therefore risky to treat the newest autosave as a permanent backup of every decision.

Manual saves give you control
A manual save is the record to use when you want to preserve a particular state deliberately. Before accepting an important quest decision, keep a manual save in a separate slot. That gives you a known starting point if you later decide to explore another outcome. Saving manually is also the safest way to maintain a long-term baseline for a character before experimenting with optional content.
Saving before a choice does not guarantee that every scene can be replayed exactly as it appeared. The sources confirm that manual saves exist, but they do not establish a universal rule about when saving is available during every cutscene or mission. Use the game’s Save and Load options when they are available, and verify the result by checking the slot’s character and progress information.
Character slots and save slots are different
A character slot is a separate run: a distinct witch or wizard with its own progress. A save slot is a point-in-time record inside that run. Creating another save slot does not create another character; it simply preserves another state of the same character.

| Item | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Character slot | A separate playthrough and house identity | Use it when beginning another run, such as a different Hogwarts house |
| Autosave slot | A game-created progress record at a key moment | Use as recovery protection, not as your only archive of decisions |
| Manual-save slot | A player-created snapshot at a chosen point | Use before major decisions, long sessions, or experimental choices |
How many slots are available?
A 2023 Steam Community discussion quotes a Warner Bros. Games support response that described the following arrangement:
| Reported capacity | Number | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Character slots | 4 | Reported in a community post quoting support; verify on your platform and current version |
| Autosave slots per character | 5 | Reported figure, not a current platform-wide specification in the official support page reviewed |
| Manual-save slots per character | 10 | Reported figure, not a current platform-wide specification in the official support page reviewed |
These numbers explain why a new house run normally fits without deleting your original character, but they should not be treated as a guarantee for every edition, platform, or future update. The save screen on your installation is the final authority. If it shows a different arrangement, follow that interface rather than the community-reported figures.

A reliable save routine for important choices
You do not need to duplicate every ordinary conversation. A small routine is enough to preserve flexibility without filling all your slots immediately.
- Keep a baseline manual save. At the beginning of a major story arc or before a difficult quest, create a manual save and leave it untouched. This is your return point if later decisions produce an outcome you do not want.
- Use a fresh slot for experiments. Make the next save in another manual slot instead of overwriting the baseline. If the result is satisfactory, you can continue from the new record; if not, load the earlier one.
- Separate characters by purpose. Start a new character when you want another house or a clean role-playing concept. Do not overwrite an existing character merely to see the opening house selection again.
- Check the selected character before loading. The distinction between character slots and save slots matters. Confirm that the load screen is showing the intended witch or wizard before committing to a record.
- Rotate older manual saves carefully. If your edition limits the number of manual records, retain a baseline and a recent working save, then replace only older experimental files. Keep the records that correspond to choices you may genuinely want to revisit.
- Do not assume a save can move between platforms. The available material does not establish cross-platform, cross-generation, or cloud-transfer behavior. Treat a save as belonging to the platform and account setup where it was created unless your platform documentation explicitly says otherwise.
Can you have more than one character?
Yes. The reported four-character arrangement is specifically intended to support separate runs. Each character slot is the practical container for a different house choice, role-playing approach, or replay plan. A second character is preferable to trying to force a new identity into an existing save because the original run remains intact.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Starting another character does not mean your first character’s progress is converted or merged into the new run. Think of the slots as parallel campaigns. The reported save counts apply per character, which is why a single character’s manual saves should not be confused with the number of total runs the game can hold.
Can you change your Hogwarts house?
The official Hogwarts Legacy FAQ says that players choose their Hogwarts house at the start of the game. The available evidence does not describe a normal option to switch that house later in the same run. If you want to experience another house, the dependable method is to create a new character and make a different selection during the opening sequence.
Do not delete the original character just to test another house. Use an empty character slot, or preserve the existing run with manual saves before beginning a new one. The house choice gives the new character a different identity, but it should not be interpreted as proof that the entire main campaign becomes four wholly separate stories.

Do choices matter in Hogwarts Legacy?
They matter selectively rather than through a universal alignment meter. The official FAQ states: “Hogwarts Legacy does not have a morality system, but players will encounter various quests and storylines that will influence the witch or wizard they choose to become.” In practical terms, the game presents decisions and lets them express your character, but it does not assign every action a visible good-versus-evil score.
What the absence of a morality system means
- There is no confirmed global morality bar that rises or falls as you answer dialogue or complete activities.
- A dark-sounding or generous response does not automatically place the character on a permanent alignment track.
- Role-playing choices can still affect how you view your character, even when they do not create a measurable gameplay status.
Which choices are more likely to have consequences?
Third-party walkthroughs identify a limited set of decisions with more visible effects, including choices connected with Sebastian’s questline and decisions associated with an ending. Those guides are useful for navigation, but they are not an official, exhaustive choice matrix. Treat their detailed outcome descriptions as guide-reported information rather than proof that every similar dialogue choice behaves the same way.
Many ordinary conversations are less consequential. A line of dialogue may change the tone of an exchange without changing the main plot, reward structure, or later mission availability. You should therefore avoid saving and reloading after every sentence unless you are role-playing a specific personality or trying to document every variation.
Spoiler warning: The next section names the kinds of content that guides associate with stronger consequences.
Sebastian’s quests and ending-related decisions
Guide coverage commonly points to decisions in Sebastian’s storyline as examples of choices that can produce more tangible differences. Other guide coverage associates certain decisions with the ending. The sources available here do not establish every trigger, consequence, or permutation, so a responsible approach is to preserve a manual save before a major quest decision and consult a current guide only if you are comfortable with spoilers.

This is also why a manual save is more useful than relying on an autosave. If a guide’s interpretation or your own later judgment makes you want to see the alternative, you have a preserved point from which to continue without replaying the entire game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes when you replay?
Replayability comes from combining a new character identity, a different house selection, selective quest consequences, and the freedom to approach the world differently. It is real, but it should not be oversold as four entirely different main campaigns.
| Replay element | What is established | How much variation to expect |
|---|---|---|
| House identity | The house is chosen at the start | A meaningful role-playing difference; not documented as a wholly separate main plot |
| Quest decisions | Some decisions can affect outcomes, rewards, or later events according to guide coverage | Selective variation, not universal branching |
| Dialogue | Many exchanges have limited main-story impact according to guides | Often tonal or character-focused rather than structurally different |
| Companion relationships | The official FAQ describes companions whose relationships develop during play | Provides character-focused reasons to revisit content |
| Post-story cleanup | A third-party guide reports that unfinished side quests remain available after the main story | Useful for completionists; treat the availability claim as guide-reported |
What does not follow from choosing another house
The official materials confirm the house choice but do not claim that each house receives an entirely different central campaign. Do not begin a second run expecting four separate storylines with unique endings at every turn. The more accurate expectation is a shared broad adventure with house identity, companion development, exploration, and selected quest decisions providing variation.
Replay plans that make sense
- House-focused run: Choose a different house and treat the new character as a fresh role-playing identity.
- Decision-focused run: Keep a manual save before major quest choices and deliberately pursue alternatives, accepting that only some choices have substantial effects.
- Companion-focused run: Follow relationship-driven questlines you rushed or skipped previously.
- Completionist run: Finish remaining side content after the main story if it is still available in your version, as reported by guide coverage.
- Low-repetition run: Use your original character for unfinished exploration and a new character only when the house or role-playing premise is the reason to replay.
Common save problems and sensible fixes
“I cannot find the save I just made.”
First check that you are looking at the correct character slot. A manual save for one character will not appear as progress inside another character’s run. Then review the available manual and autosave records separately and look for the newest timestamp or progress description shown by your edition.

That is the main limitation of autosaves: they are created at key moments chosen by the game, not necessarily immediately before every decision. Load an earlier manual save if you made one. If you did not, the game may not provide a convenient way to return to the exact pre-choice state, which is why preserving a manual baseline matters.

“I started a new house and lost my old run.”
Starting another character should not require overwriting the first one when an empty character slot is available. Before confirming any deletion or replacement, stop and inspect the character list. The reported four-slot arrangement is intended to provide room for parallel runs, although your platform’s current interface may differ.
“Can I transfer this save to another system?”
The sources considered here do not establish cloud saving, cross-platform transfer, or cross-generation transfer. Do not promise that a save created on one system can be loaded on another. Check the documentation for your platform and edition before buying or moving to a different version.
How to decide whether another playthrough is worthwhile
Start another run if your goal is a different house identity, a new role-playing concept, or a deliberate look at a quest outcome you preserved with a manual save. A replay is less compelling if you expect every conversation to create a radically different main plot or every house to unlock a separate campaign; the official information does not support that expectation.
The most accurate summary is that Hogwarts Legacy offers practical save flexibility and meaningful but limited choice variation. Use manual saves for control, character slots for separate houses, and spoiler-aware planning for the small number of questlines where decisions are reported to have stronger consequences.
