Ring the hanging gong to begin the encounter. Defeat the two Roachservers that appear, then avoid Lugoli’s muckmaggot globs and punish the openings after each attack.
Where to find Lugoli and start the fight
- Obtain the Faydown Cloak, which provides a double jump and is required to access the arena.
- Travel to the kitchen at the eastern end of Sinner’s Road.
- Ring the large gong hanging from the ceiling to start the encounter.
- Defeat the two Roachservers that appear before Lugoli enters.
PC Gamer’s Great Taste of Pharloom guide also identifies the Faydown Cloak as the access requirement and the dinner gong as the fight trigger.
How to read Lugoli’s attacks
The Hollow Knight Wiki notes that its attack names are descriptive rather than official move names. The normal encounter is reported as having 600 HP, with a phase change at 300 HP; treat those as game-reference figures, not independently verified measurements.
Opening slam
Lugoli descends and slams the ground. In the standard slam, Lugoli moves above Hornet before dropping, sending four muckmaggot globs arcing outward—two in each direction.

Horizontal leap
Lugoli leaps toward Hornet and lands, covering roughly half the arena. This is the sideways attack for which PC Gamer recommends jumping and using a pogo strike if the timing is safe.
Ladle slap
After a short wind-up, Lugoli strikes the ground in Hornet’s direction and sends two arcing globs forward. Watch the wind-up and the globs’ trajectory rather than assuming the space in front of Lugoli is clear.

Half-health dive
At half health, Lugoli roars and dives beneath the floor. Globs arc out as Lugoli enters the muck and again when Lugoli resurfaces. According to the Hollow Knight Wiki’s encounter entry, a dive from the arena’s center can produce unsymmetrical trajectories, so respond to the pattern on screen instead of dodging as if both sides were mirrored.
Strategy: stay mobile and attack after the openings
- Keep moving, but leave yourself room. The Silksong Wiki’s Lugoli guide advises staying mobile and avoiding the corners. That gives you more room to react to globs that arc or ricochet off walls.
- Use the visible attack cue. Move away from the slam and ladle’s incoming projectiles, and be ready to jump the horizontal leap. The glob arcs—not a fixed dodge pattern—should determine where you move.
- Take brief damage windows. Attack after Lugoli completes a move rather than staying close without a clear opening. A pogo attack can work after the sideways leap; ranged attacks can preserve distance if your loadout supports them.
- Handle the dive as two projectile bursts. When Lugoli disappears beneath the floor, move away from the center and look for safe gaps between the emerging globs. Attack briefly after Lugoli resurfaces, then return to watching for the next cue.
The Hollow Knight Wiki says globs inflict damage and muckmaggot infestation, ricochet from walls, and are destroyed on ground impact. Hitting one with the Needle stops its forward momentum but does not knock it away. The Wreath of Purity can prevent infestation up to three times, but it does not prevent glob damage. These are wiki-reported mechanics rather than firsthand testing.

Optional equipment and approach
The Silksong Wiki suggests the Reaper Crest for a wider strike, the Wreath of Purity for limited protection from infestation, and ranged options such as Silk Spear, Cogfly, or Silkshot. These are optional suggestions, not requirements or a proven best build.

The Hollow Knight Wiki reports that Lugoli becomes black-threaded if left until Act 3, doubles in HP, and gains a Void Blades attack. It also lists fixes in patches 1.0.28497 and 1.0.28650 for cases where Lugoli could leave or fly off screen without returning. These version details may change with later game updates.
