There are three Pale Oils in Hollow Knight: Silksong: a box puzzle in Whispering Vaults that opens into northeast Choral Chambers, Loyal Mergwin’s Great Taste of Pharloom wish, and the Flea Caravan’s Ecstasy of the End wish in Act 3. Pinmaster Plinney needs only one for his Oil wish, so accept that wish after his free first Needle upgrade and before turning in an oil. The other oils can fund additional Needle upgrades.
All three Pale Oil locations at a glance
| Location or wish | Availability and task | Reward or note |

The late-game Flea Festival minigames are described as the final challenge, but exact score thresholds are not established. |

- Mossberry Stew
- Vintage Nectar

- Crustnut
- Courier’s Rasher
The Courier’s Rasher delivery is on foot and timed; taking damage reduces the timer. Once the ingredients are delivered and Mergwin prepares the dish, he opens the container beside him, where the Pale Oil is waiting. A guide reports a 500 Rosary charge when this oil is used for the second Needle upgrade; check the in-game fee if you need to budget precisely.

Accept Pinmaster’s Oil before handing over an oil
- Free Bellhart from Widow’s curse.
- Visit Pinmaster Plinney in Bellhart and receive his free first Needle upgrade.
- Speak with him again and accept Pinmaster’s Oil.
- Bring one Pale Oil to Plinney to receive the next upgrade.
The Oil wish can be missed if you deliver an oil before accepting it. Even so, the second Needle upgrade still grants the quest point for Silk and Soul. Plinney can perform further upgrades using additional oils and Rosaries.
