The safest approach is to read the longpin: evade its throw and follow-up dash, leave the marked column when Lightfall begins, and never attack into Cross Stitch’s guard. Phantom has 650 health, according to the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki, and defeating it awards Cross Stitch.
Where to find Phantom
Phantom waits at the Exhaust Organ in Bilewater. To reach the encounter, travel through the Mist and Sinner’s Road area; the Silksong.codes guide describes Sinner’s Road as the route into the Organ. The exact route can depend on how much of the surrounding area you have explored, so follow the passages through Mist rather than treating this as a direct map.
The Hollow Knight Wiki describes Phantom as the final boss of the alternate Act 1 route. Victory opens access to the Citadel and stops the Exhaust Organ, changing the steam-blasted pipes and the local Mist area.
What to know before the fight
- The Hollow Knight Wiki lists Phantom at 650 health. Its attack labels are guide shorthand, not confirmed canonical in-game move names.
- Phantom’s longpin is the most useful visual cue: it can be thrown before Phantom dashes toward it, both from the ground and in the air.
- Cross Stitch is a defensive stance. Attacking into it is dangerous because Phantom blocks and retaliates.
- The wiki reports that Lightfall becomes available at 455 HP. At 227 HP, Phantom transitions to phase two.
Phantom attacks and how to respond
The attack descriptions and health thresholds below are reported by the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki’s Phantom page. The responses are practical interpretations of those descriptions; exact dodge timing and safe distances are not specified.

| Attack or event | What happens | How to respond |
|---|---|---|
| Flurry | Phantom makes three quick forward jabs and may cancel the final jab if Hornet gets behind. | Do not assume the sequence will finish if you move behind Phantom. Wait until the attack or repositioning has ended before looking for an opening. |
| Pin Rush | On the ground, Phantom throws its longpin and dashes toward it. A wall can alter the follow-up. | Get out of the pin’s path, then be ready for the dash. An independent Silksong Wiki boss guide recommends jumping over the pin and dash, but spacing affects the response. |
| Aerial Pin Rush | Phantom jumps, throws the pin, and dashes toward it. | Move clear of the throw line, then avoid the dash. Do not stay beside the pin’s landing point. |
| Cross Stitch guard | Phantom blocks with the longpin and retaliates if struck. It can also guard after a leap when Hornet is close. | Stop attacking and back away. The Silksong.codes guide also advises waiting for the guard to end before resuming pressure. |
| Retreat | Phantom glides backward to reposition. | Do not chase blindly; watch for the next attack after Phantom settles into position. |
| Lightfall | Phantom goes off-screen, marks Hornet’s position with a faint column and spark, then slams down there. The wiki reports that it becomes available at 455 HP. | Leave the marked column before impact. The source does not establish an exact safe distance. |
| Phase-two sequence | At 227 HP, Phantom roars and performs Lightfall five times. Mist fills the arena, and Phantom gains a teleporting move. | Focus on avoiding the full sequence rather than attacking between impacts. Reorient when Phantom reappears. |
How to beat Phantom
- Keep track of the longpin. When Phantom throws it, avoid the throw path and anticipate a dash toward the pin. The aerial version follows the same basic cue, but starts with a jump.
- Respect the guard. When Phantom holds Cross Stitch, stop attacking and create space. Resume pressure only after the defensive stance ends.
- React to the Lightfall marker. When Phantom disappears and a column and spark mark your position, move out of that column before the slam.
- Defend through phase two. The wiki reports five consecutive Lightfalls at the phase transition, followed by a teleporting move. Prioritize the sequence and reacquire Phantom’s position before committing to an attack.
- Follow the on-screen prompt after the apparent defeat. The wiki reports that Phantom can still enter a Cross Stitch exchange after reaching 0 HP, followed by a Silk Skill prompt. Treat the prompt as part of finishing the encounter, not as a reason to pursue negative health.
Reward and optional loadout ideas
Defeating Phantom grants Cross Stitch, according to the Hollow Knight Wiki and the independent Silksong Wiki guide. Cross Stitch is the reward for the encounter, not a prerequisite loadout item.
The Silksong Wiki guide suggests Silk Storm, Threadstorm, Tacks, Silkshot, Sting Shard, and Pollip Heart for particular approaches. These are optional ideas from that guide, not established requirements or a single best build. The encounter information here does not support a guaranteed strategy, exact timing, or no-hit method.
