Hollow Knight: Silksong is deliberately demanding, but its difficulty is not just about tough bosses. Fast, defensive enemies, precise platforming, costly healing decisions and the friction of retrying can all make progress feel hard. You can often change your approach by exploring elsewhere, learning patterns or finding tools—but the game does not promise an easier detour around every obstacle.
What kind of difficulty does Silksong ask for?
Difficulty in Silksong comes from several systems working together. The official Steam listing describes a game built around combat, platforming, exploration, tools, quests and boss encounters. A fight can test your reactions; the route to it can test your movement; and a failed attempt can add the burden of getting back and managing resources.
Combat is about reading and timing, not only endurance
Team Cherry designer Ari Gibson explained that Hornet is faster and more skillful than the Knight, so the enemies had to be more complicated and intelligent. Gibson said, “Hornet is inherently faster and more skillful than the Knight.” He also described the “basic ant warrior” as built from the same move-set as the original Hornet boss. These comments, reported by Nintendo Life after an ACMI Game Worlds discussion, describe the studio’s design rationale: even ordinary enemies are meant to demand attention, not simply absorb hits.
The PlayStation Blog’s mechanics overview highlights defensive enemy behavior, Hornet’s agile platform movement and a heal that restores more health but consumes all the Silk she is holding. That makes healing a timing and resource decision within a fight. It also helps explain why a difficult encounter may feel demanding even when its boss is not simply a matter of having a large health bar.

Traversal and retry friction are separate parts of the experience
Platforming hazards can make a route feel challenging in a different way from a boss fight. And when a failed attempt means repeating part of that route or managing resources again, the cost of retrying can intensify frustration without changing the boss’s attacks. Reviews discuss these experiences subjectively; they should not be treated as universal facts about how every player will fare.
Why did Team Cherry make it this challenging?
Gibson acknowledged that “Silksong has moments of steep difficulty.” He connected that challenge to the freedom of the world: “part of allowing a higher level of freedom within the world means that you have choices all the time about where you’re going and what you’re doing,” as reported by Nintendo Life.

- Hollow Knight: Silksong is the epic sequel to Hollow Knight, the award winning action-adventure.
- Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.
That is an explanation of design intent, not a guarantee that every hard encounter has a simple bypass. Gibson said the goal was to prevent players “getting stonewalled” by one challenge, with possible ways to mitigate it including “exploration, or learning, or even circumventing the challenge entirely.” Sometimes you can take a different direction or return better prepared; sometimes the answer is to understand the fight.
How can you respond when progress stalls?
The game gives you several ways to change the problem. They may reduce the pressure or help you adapt, but they do not ensure every obstacle can be avoided.

- Explore elsewhere. If a route or encounter is stopping you, look for another direction before repeatedly forcing the same attempt. This fits the freedom Gibson describes, though a detour is not guaranteed for every challenge.
- Learn the pattern. Watch how an enemy attacks and when it leaves an opening. Recognizing the sequence can matter more than attacking as often as possible.
- Reconsider healing and Silk. Because the heal described by PlayStation Blog consumes all currently held Silk, choose your moment with that cost in mind rather than treating healing as consequence-free.
- Change your kit or build your options. Tools, upgrades and quests give you ways to adjust your approach. Nintendo Life staff noted that alternate tools and exploration could help players make progress.
- Separate the fight from the trip back. If the main frustration is repeating a route after a loss, identify that as retry friction; it is different from finding the encounter itself unfair or unreadable.
Is Silksong too difficult to enjoy?
There is no robust, representative statistic establishing how difficult the game is for players generally. Nintendo Life’s reader poll reflects that site’s self-selected audience, not all players. Individual reviews are more useful as accounts of different reactions than as a consensus measurement.
For example, PC Gamer’s Tyler Colp described brutal difficulty and frustrations while still praising the game. Nintendo Life staff likewise described punishing moments alongside rewarding fights and progress through exploration and alternate tools. Those reactions can coexist: a challenge may be frustrating on one attempt and satisfying once the player adapts.

Expectations may also shape the first impression. Nintendo Life contributors suggested that familiarity with the original Hollow Knight—especially endgame experience—could make Silksong’s challenge feel surprising. That is commentary, not a controlled comparison between the two games or their players.

The useful question is not simply whether Silksong is “hard” or “fair.” Ask what kind of effort you enjoy: reading enemy behavior, refining timing, navigating hazardous routes, tolerating a costly retry or adapting through exploration and tools. Players who enjoy learning a demanding encounter may find its eventual success rewarding. If repeated attempts and travel back to a fight are the parts you dislike, the same challenge may feel more punishing than satisfying.

That distinction is what “difficulty” really means here: not one universal barrier, but the combined pressure of execution, traversal, resource decisions and the cost of failure—alongside some room to change your approach.
