Its strongest moments come from the trouble and surprises you encounter along the way. The main caveat is platform-specific: GameSpot’s March 2024 review criticized PC optimization at launch and an occasionally unwieldy camera, but that review is not a current performance test.
What kind of RPG is Dragon’s Dogma 2?
Capcom describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as an action RPG set in an expansive fantasy open world. PlayStation’s official description places the adventure across two kingdoms, Vermund and Battahl. Rather than relying on a tightly directed route, the game leans on travel, encounters and systems that can turn an ordinary journey into an improvised adventure.
That design makes the game a better fit for players who enjoy making their own way through a world than for those who want constant guidance or a streamlined trip from one story beat to the next. GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling praised the game’s surprising open world and emergent adventures in his March 20, 2024 review.
How do Pawns work, and can you play with friends?
Pawns are AI-controlled companions who give the solo adventure the feel of travelling with a party. You customize your main Pawn, then can hire two more; PlayStation says those additional Pawns can include characters created by other players and hired online. The game remains single-player: hiring another player’s Pawn does not mean that player joins your session as a co-op partner.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wakeling called Pawns “genuinely helpful in and outside of combat, contributing to a feeling of teamwork and seamless exploration.” Their support is part of the game’s appeal, but the party is still governed by AI rather than human teammates.
What are the vocations, and which should you choose?
Vocations define your character’s combat role. PlayStation’s official list includes nine options, covering close-range fighting, ranged attacks, magic, support and more specialized approaches:

Choose based on the role you want to play, rather than worrying that one early choice will lock you into a single style forever. Wakeling reported that sticking with one vocation throughout the game is viable, while trying others can reward experimentation through unlockable passive Augmentations.
What did reviewers like—and criticize?
GameSpot gave Dragon’s Dogma 2 a 9/10 (“Superb”) in Richard Wakeling’s review, published March 20, 2024. He praised the world’s beauty and surprises, emergent adventure, varied vocations, impactful combat and helpful Pawns. Wakeling disclosed that his review playthrough lasted 40 hours; that is his experience, not a completion-time guarantee.

The same review listed poor PC optimization and an occasionally unwieldy camera as weaknesses. The PC criticism describes the review’s launch-era conditions, not measured performance on current hardware or a verdict on every platform. Readers who need a current performance recommendation should look for recent testing of the specific platform they plan to use.

If you are choosing a platform, separate the available edition from performance expectations: the cited review’s PC caveat is dated and does not establish how the game runs on a particular system today. A current platform-specific test is the useful evidence for that decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: is Dragon’s Dogma 2 worth playing?
Yes, if you enjoy exploratory fantasy RPGs where distinct combat roles, AI party support and unscripted encounters make the journey itself the draw. It is a less natural fit if you specifically want human co-op, a highly directed adventure or a simple combat style with little system experimentation. For a PS5 purchase, look for the official Dragon’s Dogma 2 for PS5 listing; verify the edition and current availability before buying.
