Spoilers for Act 2, the Act 3 transition, optional duels, and the Twisted Child ending. Before you enter Act 3, decide whether you want the Twisted Child ending or Act 2-only encounters, then pursue those goals before completing Silk and Soul. Act 3 begins after you defeat Grand Mother Silk and choose Needolin. The game’s exact requirements for unlocking Silk and Soul are not established by the guides: one recommends a broad, cautious checklist, while another reports reaching it without completing every town wish, side quest, or flea task.
What should you do before Act 3?
Use this checklist to decide what to finish before taking the Snared Silk route:
- Decide whether you want the Twisted Child ending. Nintendo Life warns that entering Act 3 without cursing Hornet locks this ending out on that save. If you want it, complete the Twisted Bud/Greyroot route and reach the relevant ending first. It is not required to enter Act 3. Nintendo Life’s Act 3 guide explains its route.
- Try progression-sensitive duels while you can. Community-maintained references report that Shakra’s friendly duel outside Bellhart is unavailable in Act 3. Garmond and Zaza’s duel above the Whispering Vaults may become unavailable earlier, depending on whether you met Garmond and how far you progressed. These are community-reported missables, not confirmed by an official developer checklist. If you want every encounter or journal record, pursue them as soon as they become available. Shakra’s community wiki entry and Garmond and Zaza’s entry cover the encounters.
- Work toward Silk and Soul. The Caretaker in Songclave gives the quest. It calls for three souls—the Maiden’s, Hermit’s, and Seeker’s—and the Snare Setter tool, found in Weavenest Atla. See the Nintendo Life route or PC Gamer’s Act 3 guide for their reported unlock paths.
- Choose how much prerequisite cleanup to do. If you want to minimize the chance of having to backtrack, follow the fuller Nintendo Life route below. If you prefer to try a less exhaustive route, PC Gamer reports that it reached the unlock with most town-board wishes, 22 fleas, Pale Lake caravan progress, and the Architect, Conductor, and Vaultkeeper melodies. That is one guide writer’s successful route, not a confirmed minimum.
- Complete the transition deliberately. Finish Silk and Soul, defeat Grand Mother Silk, and play Needolin when prompted. The Snared Silk ending rolls the credits; then reopen your save from the menu to start Act 3.
Which unlock checklist should you follow?
The guides differ on how much side content is needed before Silk and Soul appears. Nintendo Life offers a cautious, extensive route; PC Gamer says not every wish, flea, or side quest is necessary. Neither account establishes an official minimum, so treat the shorter route as a reported successful path rather than a guarantee.
Cautious route: cover the broader checklist
Nintendo Life’s route includes the following steps and conditions:

- Explore Bilewater and the Putrified Ducts.
- Move the Flea Caravan to Pale Lake. Nintendo Life describes this route as involving about 25 fleas; that is its guide-specific count, not an established universal threshold.
This approach takes more time, but it is the safer choice if you want to reduce uncertainty about the quest unlock.
Less exhaustive route: use PC Gamer’s reported progress
PC Gamer says its successful route did not require every town wish, flea, or side quest. It reports completing most board wishes, reaching 22 fleas (possibly including certain named fleas), moving the caravan to Pale Lake, and obtaining the Architect, Conductor, and Vaultkeeper melodies. The account does not establish that this exact set is the minimum, or that it will unlock the quest for every player.

- Hollow Knight: Silksong is the epic sequel to Hollow Knight, the award winning action-adventure.
- Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.
In short, do not mistake either guide’s route for a confirmed universal checklist: use the broader route when certainty matters more than cleanup time, and the narrower one when you are comfortable testing the unlock with less completed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes when you enter Act 3?
Act 3 changes some routes and enemy states rather than simply removing all side content. According to PC Gamer’s guide and the community-maintained Act 3 overview, some passages close as new routes open, some enemies and bosses gain Void effects, Bone Bottom is largely destroyed, and the Wormways are overrun with Plasmium. Side content remains broadly available, but some encounters—especially gauntlets—become harder. That makes optional tasks worth considering early even when they are not known prerequisites for the act transition.
