Hollow Knight: Silksong was estimated to have sold more than 3.2 million copies on Steam in September 2025, but that was a third-party estimate—not an official figure from Team Cherry or Valve. Team Cherry later said the game had passed seven million purchases across all platforms, without giving a Steam-only total.
What the 3.2 million figure means
GameDiscoverCo estimated that Silksong had sold more than 3.2 million Steam copies in a newsletter dated September 12, 2025. PC Gamer reported the estimate on September 15, describing it as covering roughly the game’s first two weeks after its September 4 release. It is an analyst estimate, not a sales count published by the developer or Steam.
GameDiscoverCo’s newsletter is partly paywalled, so the cited public material does not expose the full underlying calculation. Treat the figure as a reported estimate of launch-period Steam sales, not an audited count or a current lifetime total. Steam’s store listing confirms the September 4, 2025 release date but does not disclose units sold.
How the other reported figures differ
GameDiscoverCo also estimated more than 500,000 copies each on PlayStation and Switch, alongside approximately 1.5 million Xbox Game Pass downloads. These are separate estimates with different meanings: Game Pass downloads are not purchases, and GameDiscoverCo said it was unclear how those downloads divided between console and PC.

What Team Cherry’s later update adds
In a December 15, 2025 post, Team Cherry said: “That’s over seven million of you who’ve purchased the game, alongside millions more playing on Xbox Game Pass!” The seven-million-plus figure is the studio’s official all-platform purchase statement. It does not say how many purchases came from Steam, PlayStation, Switch, or Xbox, so it cannot be used as a direct update to the Steam estimate.
The studio also described the response as “a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!).” That is Team Cherry’s reaction to the game’s reception, not additional platform-specific sales data.

Is 3.2 million still the current Steam total?
No current Steam-only total is established by these figures. The 3.2 million estimate refers to a period around the first two weeks after release; the later official number covers purchases across platforms and provides no allocation. Steam’s store page is a product listing, not a unit-sales disclosure, so neither source supports stating a present-day lifetime Steam total.
The distinction matters when describing the game’s scale: a platform purchase estimate, an all-platform purchase statement, and subscription-service downloads or players are not interchangeable metrics. They should not be added together or presented as one sales count.
