What is Sea of Sorrow?
Sea of Sorrow is a free expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong, announced by developer Team Cherry. Team Cherry calls it a “nautically themed expansion” and says Hornet’s adventures will continue “across and beneath the salt-stricken seas.”
The announcement describes the setting and broad direction, but it does not provide a full feature list or a gameplay demonstration. “New areas, bosses, tools, and more” is the extent of the announced content detail so far.
When does the Silksong expansion release?
Team Cherry plans to release Sea of Sorrow in 2026. The official announcement and Steam announcement do not give a specific day or month, so there is not yet a more precise date to mark on a calendar. Team Cherry says further information will arrive shortly before release; it has not specified when that update will be published.

Yes. Team Cherry says the expansion will be free for all players. The Steam announcement also confirms that it is free.

Team Cherry has not yet published the full contents of the expansion, shown a gameplay demonstration, or provided a platform-by-platform availability list for Sea of Sorrow. The official Nintendo US listing confirms Silksong has a Switch listing, but it does not establish expansion-specific platform details or a physical product for the expansion. Those details remain unannounced.
