Honkai Impact 3rd Team Compositions: How to Match DPS, Support, and Elemental Damage

Choose a damage dealer for the fight, match support effects to its element and damage type, and verify older team examples against the live game. Breach effects and overlapping roles make kit details more useful than role labels alone.

Build a Honkai Impact 3rd team around the damage dealer you intend to use, then choose supports whose actual effects fit that battlesuit’s damage type, element, and kit. Check the enemy, encounter, game mode, and current in-game descriptions before calling any lineup optimal: elemental and physical breach address different damage contexts, and the available examples do not establish a universal best team.

Start with the damage dealer and the encounter

A useful team is not simply a collection of highly rated battlesuits. Its members need to work toward the same damage plan in the fight you are preparing for. Begin by deciding which battlesuit is meant to deal most of the team’s damage, then consider what the encounter asks that lineup to do.

Before selecting supports, identify the relevant conditions: the enemy you will face, the game mode, any mechanics that affect how the fight unfolds, and the damage type or element the encounter rewards or resists. Those details matter because a lineup that suits one boss or mode is not automatically the right choice elsewhere. The available sources do not provide enough current, roster-wide evidence to rank one composition as best across all encounters.

Make the intended damage plan explicit

For each candidate battlesuit, look at its current in-game description and ask what job it can perform in this particular lineup. A damage dealer is the character you are building the team’s main damage plan around; a support is selected for effects that help that plan. These are functional roles, not necessarily permanent labels: some battlesuits can contribute meaningfully in more than one way.

Write down the plan in plain terms before filling the remaining team slots. For example: “This lineup is built around this dealer’s Ice damage,” or “This lineup is built around physical damage.” That short statement gives you a test for each proposed support: does its kit help this damage plan or solve a relevant encounter need? If not, its general reputation is not a sufficient reason to include it.

Use the current encounter, not an old team list

Team examples age as the game changes, and even a current character description is not by itself a complete comparison of lineups. Before relying on a guide, check its version and whether it addresses your mode and enemy. Then verify the relevant skills and effects in the live game. A dated example can explain a kind of synergy; it cannot establish that the same team is currently optimal for your account and fight.

Match supports to damage type and element

Once you have chosen the damage dealer, check whether a support’s effects apply to the dealer’s element or damage mechanic. Do not treat “support” as a guarantee that every buff will help every team. Read the effect itself and consider which teammate, damage type, or situation it refers to.

HoYoverse’s official Jade Knight character guide positions her as Ice DMG support. That makes her a useful example of role matching: her stated positioning connects her to Ice damage. It does not, on its own, prove that she is the best choice for every Ice damage dealer, mode, or enemy. The searchable guide text does not establish specific team recommendations, so a particular lineup should not be inferred from the role description alone.

Elemental damage is not interchangeable with physical damage

Use the damage category that applies to the intended dealer when evaluating support effects. A buff or breach effect relevant to elemental damage should not be assumed to serve physical damage in the same way, or vice versa. The word “breach” alone is not enough to decide whether an effect fits: check whether the effect is elemental or physical and whether it applies to the damage plan you are building around.

HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement, published June 25, 2026, describes Wings of Panacea as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. This is a clear example of overlapping roles and of breach effects that differ by damage context. The announcement is a character and update description, not a numerical comparison of team performance or a claim that one breach type is universally preferable.

Check the effect, not just the character label

For each support candidate, inspect the current skill descriptions for the effect that would help your chosen dealer. Confirm its damage category and any stated conditions, then check whether the encounter makes that effect relevant. If the wording or practical interaction is unclear, do not build a supposedly optimal team around an assumption. Test the lineup in the relevant mode and compare how it handles the encounter.

  • Does the effect match the dealer’s element or physical damage?
  • Does it help with the enemy or mechanic you are facing?
  • Does the effect’s stated condition fit how you plan to use the lineup?
  • Does the candidate bring a useful support contribution in this team, rather than only being a strong character in isolation?

Allow for battlesuits with overlapping roles

A battlesuit may deal damage and provide support utility in the same composition. That means role labels should help you understand a kit, not replace checking how the kit functions alongside the other characters. A support who also contributes damage is not automatically a poor support; a damage dealer with useful team effects is not automatically the best support for every lineup.

A player-authored Coralie guide for version 8.4, dated August 21, 2025, describes her as a Fire damage dealer and also discusses support use through elemental and physical breach. It proposes team contexts for Grail of Infinitude and Law of Ascension. Treat this as a dated illustration of role overlap and specific team contexts, not as a current official recommendation. Verify the battlesuit’s live skills and the relevant team interactions before applying the example.

Evaluate the whole lineup’s division of work

When roles overlap, ask what each character actually contributes to the intended plan. A candidate may be worthwhile because it supplies a relevant team effect, contributes damage, or helps address a specific encounter condition. Conversely, a character can be described as a support and still be a poor fit if its effects do not benefit the chosen dealer or the fight.

Check how the lineup functions as a whole, including its rotation and role overlap. The available sources do not provide tested rotation instructions or numerical comparisons for current teams, so do not assume that a role label or an example team proves the rotation is effective. Use current kit descriptions and in-game testing to determine whether the characters’ contributions work together in practice.

Compare candidate teams with the same checklist

If you are choosing between two or more lineups, compare them on the same encounter rather than relying on a general tier-list impression. The reviewed sources do not give a current numerical team comparison, so these are decision criteria—not measured rankings or guaranteed performance outcomes.

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Damage type and element Whether the main dealer’s damage plan fits the enemy and mode, and whether each support’s relevant effects match that plan. A support effect for one damage context should not be assumed to benefit a different one.
Breach and other support effects Whether the lineup provides relevant Elemental Breach, Physical Breach, or other kit effects for the dealer and encounter. Elemental and physical breach are distinct contexts; the effect must fit the team’s damage plan.
Encounter coverage Whether the lineup can address the specific enemy, boss mechanics, and mode conditions you are facing. A team that works in one encounter may not suit another.
Rotation and role overlap How the characters’ effects and damage contributions work together in the lineup. Characters can have overlapping roles, so the full team matters more than labels alone.
Availability and investment Whether the characters are available in your roster and whether you are prepared to use the lineup you can actually field. A theoretically appealing composition is useful only if it is a practical option for your account.

Prefer a verified fit over a borrowed “best team”

Use a team recommendation as a candidate to evaluate, not as a universal answer. Check its publication date and version, confirm that it concerns the same battlesuits and encounter you have, and then validate the underlying effects in the live game. If a source does not specify a mode, enemy, or current version, it does not establish how the team performs under those conditions.

This is especially important when an example is several versions old or comes from a player guide. Player-authored guidance can illustrate a possible interaction, but it should not be presented as HoYoverse’s official recommendation. Even an official update announcement may describe a character’s roles without comparing that character’s teams against alternatives.

What the available team examples do—and do not—show

The examples below illustrate different kinds of evidence. Their value is in showing how to think about role matching, breach, and character synergy. They do not supply a current, universal team ranking.

Example What it establishes What not to infer
Jade Knight character guide HoYoverse positions Jade Knight as Ice DMG support. It does not establish a best lineup for every Ice dealer; the available searchable guide text does not expose specific team recommendations.
Wings of Panacea, version 8.9 announcement HoYoverse describes her as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. The announcement was published June 25, 2026. It is not a full meta analysis, a numerical comparison, or proof that one breach type or team is best in every encounter.
Coralie, version 8.4 player guide A player-authored guide dated August 21, 2025 describes her as a Fire damage dealer with support use through elemental and physical breach, and gives team contexts for Grail of Infinitude and Law of Ascension. It is not an official recommendation or proof of current performance. The examples need to be checked against the live game.
Herrscher trio, version 6.4 beta player guide An older player guide describes a coordinated lineup built around Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, and Herrscher of Truth, illustrating specialized character synergy. Its age means it should not be used as a recommendation for the current meta.

A practical team-building workflow

  1. Choose the fight and mode. Identify the encounter you are preparing for and note the enemy, mechanics, and mode conditions that could affect team choice.
  2. Select the intended damage dealer. Decide which available battlesuit will anchor your damage plan. Check its current in-game description so you know the relevant element or damage type.
  3. Read each support’s current effects. For every candidate, identify the actual effect you expect to help the dealer. Check whether it refers to elemental or physical damage, and whether its stated conditions fit the planned lineup.
  4. Check role overlap. Consider whether a character contributes damage as well as support utility, and how that contribution fits the complete team. Do not reject or select a battlesuit based only on a broad role label.
  5. Compare candidate lineups on the same criteria. Use damage match, breach and other relevant effects, encounter coverage, rotation, roster availability, and investment. Treat these as questions to answer, not a source of invented performance scores.
  6. Verify and test. Check the live skill descriptions and try the lineup in the relevant encounter. If a guide is version-bound or player-authored, use it as an example to verify rather than as proof that the team remains optimal.

Common team-building mistakes

  • Choosing supports by reputation alone. A character’s general standing does not show that its effects fit your dealer, enemy, or mode. Inspect the relevant kit effect.
  • Treating elemental and physical breach as equivalent. The version 8.9 announcement distinguishes Elemental Breach from Physical Breach. Match the effect to the damage context instead of treating “breach” as one interchangeable bonus.
  • Assuming every character has only one role. The Coralie example and the Wings of Panacea announcement both illustrate that a battlesuit can be described as a damage dealer and also have a support function. Evaluate the whole lineup.
  • Copying an old beta composition as current advice. The version 6.4 Herrscher trio is useful as an example of tailored synergy, not as evidence of today’s best lineup.
  • Calling an example team universally optimal. Encounter, enemy, mode, roster, investment, and current patch can change the decision. A character guide or release announcement does not substitute for a current comparison across those conditions.

How to read team advice responsibly

Look for three things in any team recommendation: its game version or publication date, the encounter or mode it addresses, and the specific character effects behind the recommendation. If those details are missing, treat the advice as a starting point rather than a proven answer for your situation.

The official materials cited here support role examples, not a comprehensive current tier list. HoYoverse’s Jade Knight guide identifies Ice DMG support positioning, while its version 8.9 announcement describes Wings of Panacea’s damage-dealer and breach-support functions. The Coralie and Herrscher trio examples are player-authored and version-bound. These sources help explain how to match kits; they do not provide a numerical, roster-wide ranking of current teams by mode.
