To free up space for a large Steam game, check the free space on the drive that will actually hold the game, then use Steam’s Settings > Storage page to choose a roomier library, move an installed game, or uninstall one you no longer want. If that is not enough, review Windows cleanup suggestions and your large personal files before deleting anything. Check the destination drive again before installing; the amount you can recover depends on the files you choose.
Check the game’s destination drive first
Free space on your Windows system drive is not necessarily the space Steam needs. A Steam library can be on a different drive, so check the destination you intend to use rather than assuming the game will install to C:.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Find the drive where you plan to install the game and note its available space.
- Check the game’s current Steam store page for its listed system requirements and storage requirement. Do not assume that another game’s requirement, or the amount of space shown as free on a different drive, applies to this installation.
- Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage. Review the listed library drives and installed games, and identify which library is set up for the new installation.
If Steam reports “not enough disk space,” compare the message with the free space on that specific library drive. If you have more than one library, the first option may be to use a different one rather than deleting files from the Windows drive.
Think of the check as matching two things: the library Steam will use and the drive that library is stored on. A cleanup on C: will not solve a space shortage if the game is being installed to another drive. Likewise, having room on another drive does not help until Steam is directed to a library there. Confirm the selected destination before you start removing files.

Choose the least risky way to make room
The right option depends on whether you have another library with space, whether you still want the games or files taking up room, and how much effort you are willing to spend. Use this comparison before removing data:
| Option | Space and effort | What it keeps | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install to another existing Steam library | Uses space on a different drive; usually requires little cleanup. | Leaves the original drive’s files in place. | Confirm that the alternate library is on the drive with enough free space. |
| Move an installed Steam game | Frees room on the source library after the move completes; takes time to transfer the game. | Keeps the game installation, now in another library. | There must be a suitable destination library with room. |
| Uninstall a game through Steam | Can recover the space used by that installed game; effort is low. | Does not keep the installed game files on that library. | Check separate save data first. Some games store saves outside Steam Cloud and use developer-chosen locations. |
| Use Windows cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense | May free space from eligible cleanup categories; review takes time. | Depends on the specific files and categories selected. | Inspect the selection before removal; deleting a previous Windows installation can remove the option to roll back an upgrade. |
| Delete or move personal files | Recovery varies with the files chosen; sorting and transferring can take time. | Moving preserves wanted files; deleting does not. | Check what a file is and where it is going before deleting it. |
| Add a compatible internal SSD | Provides additional capacity after hardware compatibility and installation are addressed. | Existing files can remain on their current drives. | Verify the computer’s supported interface, form factor, and capacity before buying. |
For a one-time installation, start with the least disruptive option: an existing library with room, or a game you have decided you no longer want installed. Cleanup tools and personal-file review can help when the shortage remains, but both require judgment about what is safe to remove. A new SSD involves purchase and compatibility checks, so it is better considered when space problems recur rather than as the first response to one installation.
Use Steam Storage to move a game or choose another library
Steam Support documents adding an alternate library location, directing future installations to it, and moving an existing game’s installation folder to another location on the same computer. These options let you manage game installations without manually dragging folders through File Explorer.
Install the new game to another library
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage.
- Review the available library drives and the free space shown for each. If you need another destination, use Steam’s option to create an alternate library location.
- When starting the new game’s installation, select the library on the drive you want to use. Check the destination shown by Steam before confirming.
This is the simplest choice when another library already has adequate space and you want to leave the current drive’s contents alone. Creating a library does not add physical capacity: it gives Steam a location on a drive that must itself have room.
Do not choose a library solely because it appears in Steam’s list. Compare its drive with the intended destination and available capacity. If you add an alternate location, make sure it is on the drive you mean to use. Then verify the selected library in the installation prompt; the choice of library determines where Steam places the game.
Move an installed game to free space on its current drive
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage and select the library containing the game.
- Find the installed game in the storage list and use Steam’s move option to select a different library location.
- Wait for the move to finish, then check Storage again to confirm the game is listed at its new location and that the original library has more free space.
Moving works when you want to keep the installed game and have another Steam library with enough capacity. A move does not create new total storage; it redistributes the space already available across your drives. Steam Support’s instructions cover moving games to another location on the same computer.

Allow the transfer to complete before treating the source drive as cleared. The practical benefit is that the game remains installed, but it no longer occupies the original library’s space. If the destination drive is nearly full as well, moving the game will not solve the overall capacity problem; it only changes which drive carries the files. Afterward, use Steam Storage and File Explorer to confirm the new location and the source drive’s free space.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Uninstall games carefully—and protect separate saves
If you are comfortable removing an installed game, uninstall it from the Steam client rather than deleting its folder by hand. First decide that you no longer need the installation, and check the particular game’s save arrangements. Steam Cloud does not cover every game or every kind of save: Steam notes that some third-party games that do not save through Steam Cloud may keep saves or profiles in DocumentsMy Games. Developers choose where and how their games store save data, so check the game’s own information before removing related files.
Uninstalling an installation and deleting a save are separate decisions. Do not assume that because Steam offers an uninstall option, every save or profile is stored in the same place as the game files. Look up the particular game’s save behavior, especially if you have progress you cannot replace. If you are unsure about a related folder, leave it in place until you have confirmed what it contains and whether the game synchronizes it.
Do not uninstall the Steam client as a shortcut for reclaiming the space used by one game. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam removes Steam and installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to keep game installations, Steam Support advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. That precaution is about preserving installed game content during a client reinstall; it is not a substitute for checking a game’s separate save files.
Use Windows cleanup tools, reviewing each selection
Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though the cleanup tools and screens differ by version. Use the tool available on your system and review what it proposes to remove instead of selecting categories blindly.

- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review the categories Windows presents. They can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
- Inspect the individual items or selections before removing them. Keep anything you may need, including files whose cloud status or purpose is unclear.
- Run the cleanup only for items you have reviewed, then return to This PC and check the destination drive’s available space.
Cleanup recommendations can surface more than disposable temporary data. In particular, Microsoft warns that deleting a previous Windows installation can remove the ability to roll back an upgrade. Do not remove that category casually if you may need to return to the prior Windows version.

Review the categories as separate choices, not as a single “safe to delete” bundle. Temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced items, and unused apps can represent different kinds of data. If Windows identifies something you do not recognize, pause and find out what it is before approving its removal. The goal is to make room for the game without trading a storage problem for lost files or an unavailable Windows rollback.
Windows 10: Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup
Windows 10 includes Storage Sense and Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup as a built-in option. Open Windows Settings and look under System > Storage for Storage Sense; review its available cleanup choices before running it. For Disk Cleanup, use Windows search to find and open the tool, choose the drive to examine, and review the file categories it lists before confirming removal. Labels and available options can vary by Windows version and configuration, so rely on the descriptions shown on your PC.
Use these tools on the drive that needs space, and do not rely on a cleanup result from another drive as proof that the installation destination is ready. If an option lists categories or files you do not understand, leave those items unchecked while you review the choices you do understand. The article’s core test remains the same on either Windows version: after cleanup, check the available space on the Steam library’s actual drive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After each cleanup, check free space again. The change depends on the files that were eligible and that you chose to remove; there is no reliable universal amount of space that these tools will recover.
Review large personal files before deleting them
Windows cleanup tools are not the only place to look. Large files in Downloads, Videos, Music, and Pictures may be using space on the target drive. Open those folders in File Explorer and review what you actually have, rather than removing a whole folder because it is large.
- Delete files you no longer need. If you are sure, delete selected items and empty the Recycle Bin when you are ready to reclaim the space. Until it is emptied, deleted files may still occupy storage.
- Move files you want to keep. Move them to another drive or external storage if you have a suitable destination, then confirm that the transfer completed and the files open from the new location before removing any remaining copies.
- Check personal and game-related folders separately. A file that looks like ordinary personal data may be a game profile or save. Check the particular game’s save location before deleting or moving files associated with it.
Microsoft’s guidance supports deleting or moving personal files to another drive or external storage. The choice is yours: deleting is appropriate only for files you no longer need, while moving is the safer route for files you want to retain.

A useful sequence is to review one folder at a time, decide whether each large item is no longer needed or should be kept, and then act accordingly. If you move a file, confirm that the copy on the destination opens before you remove the original. If you delete it, remember that it may remain in the Recycle Bin until you empty it. This avoids treating a file as gone before the storage has actually been reclaimed.

Check the result before starting the installation
- Return to File Explorer, open This PC, and check available space on the intended destination drive.
- In Steam, revisit Settings > Storage and confirm that the intended library is on that drive.
- Start the installation and verify that Steam is using the library you selected.
- If the message still says there is not enough space, recheck both the selected library and that drive’s available capacity. Do not assume that cleanup on a different drive will resolve the problem.
The available official guidance does not establish a single amount of extra temporary installation space that every Steam game needs. If the drive appears to have enough room but installation still fails, check the game’s current store requirement and Steam’s selected destination. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another hard drive and adding a Steam library folder when a different location is available.
For troubleshooting, change one thing at a time: confirm the library, confirm the drive, and then consider a different available drive or a new Steam library location. That makes it easier to see whether the problem was simply that Steam was pointed at a different drive than expected. Do not assume that a generic free-space target will work for every title; the game’s current store listing is the relevant starting point, and Steam’s guidance does not specify a universal temporary-space allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When adding storage makes sense
If you regularly have to remove wanted files or uninstall games to make room, adding capacity may be more practical than repeating cleanup. A compatible internal SSD is an optional longer-term solution, but compatibility depends on the PC or motherboard. Check the manufacturer’s or motherboard documentation for the supported interface, form factor, and capacity before choosing a drive.
Do not buy based on capacity alone. Confirm that the system supports the drive’s interface and physical form factor, and check supported capacity in the computer or motherboard documentation. The right fit depends on the specific machine; there is no single SSD model or specification that can be recommended for every PC from the information here.

That warning is not a claim that every external drive behaves identically, but it is a reason not to treat external storage as the default destination for a Steam library. External storage can still be useful for offloading personal files; whether it suits a particular game installation is a separate compatibility and performance decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which drive should I clear if Steam says there is not enough disk space?
Check the drive that contains the Steam library selected for the new game, not automatically the Windows system drive. Open File Explorer and select This PC to see drive space, then check Steam’s Settings > Storage page to identify the library and its drive. Cleanup on a different drive will not resolve the shortage unless you direct the installation to a library on that drive.
Can I move a Steam game to another drive without uninstalling it?
Yes. Steam’s Settings > Storage page lets you select the library containing an installed game and use Steam’s move option to choose another library location on the same computer. The game remains installed at the destination, and the source drive should have more room once the transfer completes. The destination library needs enough free capacity.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will uninstalling a Steam game delete my save files?
Save storage varies by game. Steam notes that some third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves or profiles in Documents\My Games, and developers choose where and how saves are kept. Check the particular game’s save information before uninstalling or deleting related files; do not assume that the installation folder contains every save.
How much space will Windows cleanup tools free?
There is no reliable universal amount. The result depends on which files are eligible and which items you choose to remove. Review Windows 11 Cleanup recommendations or the cleanup choices available through Windows 10 Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup, then check free space on the destination drive again.
Should I install Steam on an external hard drive?
Steam Support does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. External storage can be useful for moving personal files you want to keep, but do not treat it as the default location for a Steam library. For a longer-term game-storage expansion, check whether your PC supports a compatible internal SSD.
Is uninstalling Steam a good way to make room for one game?
No. Steam warns that uninstalling the Steam client removes Steam and installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to preserve installed games, Steam Support advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. For space used by an individual game, manage or uninstall that game through Steam instead, and separately check its save-data arrangements.
What if I have enough free space but Steam still reports a shortage?
First verify that Steam is installing to the library and drive you checked, then compare that drive’s free space with the game’s current Steam store requirement. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another hard drive and adding a Steam library folder when another location is available. Official guidance does not specify one temporary-space amount that applies to every game.
The Bottom Line
Check the drive behind the Steam library you will use, then free space by choosing another library, moving or uninstalling a game, reviewing Windows cleanup selections, or sorting personal files. Protect saves and files you still need, and confirm the destination drive’s free space in both File Explorer and Steam before installing.
