It is not a work of art as a camera. Its detachable plant head, flexible stalk, Warp Pipe base, mounting options, and mouth-shaped privacy shutter make it one of the most expressive gaming accessories available. But its 640×480 image is noticeably behind Nintendo’s 1080p Switch 2 Camera.
The simplest verdict is this: Hori made a delightful Nintendo collectible that happens to be a webcam, rather than a great webcam that happens to look like a Piranha Plant.

A webcam designed like a character sculpture
The Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 turns an anonymous piece of video hardware into something immediately recognizable. Instead of looking like office equipment, it looks as though a Piranha Plant has emerged from a Warp Pipe and is waiting to join your GameChat session.
That transformation is more than a cosmetic skin. The plant’s open mouth frames the lens, and closing the mouth covers the lens to provide a physical privacy barrier. It does not disconnect or electrically disable the camera, but it gives users an unmistakable visual signal that the lens is covered.
#1 Best Overall
- USB Video Camera for Nintendo Switch 2
- Compatible with TV mode, portable mode, and tabletop mode.
- Flexible neck and mouth that can open and close
- Includes USB-C Cable and 3.5mm Stereo Right-Angle Adapter
- Officially Licensed by Nintendo
The flexible neck lets the plant be aimed and posed, while the Warp Pipe-style base makes the accessory look at home on a desk even when the Switch 2 is not being used. This is why calling it a “work of art” is defensible as an opinion about the object: Hori has made the accessory communicate personality, function, and Nintendo identity at the same time.
It is a modular mounting system, not just a novelty
Hori’s design works in three main configurations:
- Base mode: The camera sits in its included base and connects through the Switch 2 dock for TV or tabletop play.
- TV-mounted mode: The adjustable clip integrated into the base can attach to the top of a television.
- Handheld mode: The camera unit detaches from the base and attaches directly to the top of the Switch 2.
That flexibility is one of the product’s strongest arguments. The Piranha Plant shape is not merely decorative; the character has been built around a detachable camera head, adjustable mounting hardware, and a base that can serve as both stand and display piece.
The package includes the camera unit, Warp Pipe-style base, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 3.5mm stereo right-angle adapter, and adjustable mounting hardware. The right-angle adapter is particularly practical in handheld mode, where the plant’s leaves, cable routing, and nearby headphone connections can otherwise compete for space.

The 480p camera is the unavoidable compromise
Hori lists the camera at 640×480 resolution, 30 frames per second, and an 85-degree field of view. It connects through USB-C and is designed primarily for Nintendo Switch 2, although Hori says performance on other devices may vary.
| Specification | Hori Piranha Plant Camera |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 640×480 / 480p |
| Frame rate | 30fps |
| Field of view | 85 degrees |
| Connection | USB-C |
| Privacy feature | Mouth covers the lens |
| Switch 2 configurations | TV, tabletop, and handheld |
That resolution is the product’s decisive weakness. Independent comparisons found the Piranha Plant camera noticeably blurrier than Nintendo’s Switch 2 Camera, which offers 1080p video and a wider 110-degree field of view. Reviewers at TechRadar and Nintendo Life both treated image quality as the main reason to hesitate.
That does not make the camera unusable. GameChat may show participants in relatively small windows, so some users will find 480p adequate for occasional conversations. The problem is that the limitation becomes obvious when the camera is positioned far away, several people share the frame, lighting is poor, or the image is viewed at a larger size. Anyone expecting a clear modern webcam feed should look elsewhere.

Nintendo’s GameChat supports voice chat, video chat, and screen sharing. Up to 12 people can join a GameChat session, while up to four users can share video and/or their game screen at once. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera.

- USB Video Camera for Nintendo Switch 2
- Compatible with TV mode, handheld mode, and tabletop mode.
- Flexible neck and lens cover

Under Nintendo’s current support information, GameChat requires a Nintendo Account, a persistent internet connection, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The temporary open-access period that ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026, has ended and should not be treated as a current exemption.
A camera is not required for audio-only GameChat. Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, and Nintendo says other USB cameras may work, although third-party compatibility is not guaranteed. To check a connected camera, open System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera.
The camera’s visual filters and game integration come from Switch 2 software and are not unique features of Hori’s model. Hori’s advantage is the physical design and the way it fits into different Switch 2 setups.

Hori versus Nintendo’s official camera
| Factor | Hori Piranha Plant | Nintendo Switch 2 Camera |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 480p | 1080p |
| Field of view | 85 degrees | 110 degrees |
| Design | Nintendo character collectible | Plain conventional accessory |
| Privacy | Piranha Plant mouth covers the lens | Built-in shutter |
| Handheld use | Camera detaches from the base and attaches to the console | Designed to connect to the console |
| Best reason to buy | Personality, portability, and display value | Better image quality and wider framing |
TechRadar’s comparison found Nintendo’s camera to be the stronger performance choice, while also noting that it is not necessarily a premium webcam. The choice is therefore unusually clear: Nintendo’s model is the rational camera purchase; Hori’s is the emotional and collectible purchase.

Price makes the decision more complicated
U.S. pricing is inconsistent across the official pages. Hori’s U.S. listing showed a current price of $39.99 in the supplied pricing check, while Nintendo’s Switch 2 product page showed a $59.99 regular-price signal for the Piranha Plant Camera and $54.99 for Nintendo’s own camera. Retailer pricing and availability can change, so those figures should be treated as dated price signals rather than a universal price.
At around $39.99, Hori’s design premium is easier to justify for Nintendo fans. As its price approaches or exceeds Nintendo’s camera, the value argument depends almost entirely on how much the character design matters to you.
Who should buy it?
Buy Hori’s camera if you value:
- Piranha Plant and Mario character design.
- A display-worthy accessory rather than a generic webcam.
- Handheld camera use.
- A physical privacy shutter with personality.
- Portability, collectibility, and novelty more than sharp video.
Choose Nintendo’s camera if you value:
- 1080p image quality.
- A wider field of view for families or groups.
- Frequent GameChat use.
- A conventional webcam experience with fewer compromises.
Buy neither if:
- You only need voice chat.
- You already own a compatible USB camera.
- You expect premium webcam quality.
- You do not use GameChat, CameraPlay, or other supported camera features.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
Hori positions the product primarily as a Switch 2 accessory. It may function with other devices, but performance can vary, so it should not be purchased on the assumption that it will be a dependable Windows, Mac, Discord, or general-purpose webcam.

The verdict
Hori’s Piranha Plant Camera succeeds because it understands that accessories can be objects people want to own, display, and interact with—not just devices judged by a specification sheet. The mouth-shaped shutter, flexible stalk, detachable head, Warp Pipe base, and multiple mounting options form a coherent design rather than a pile of superficial flourishes.
But the camera remains a 480p webcam in a market where Nintendo’s own alternative offers 1080p and a wider field of view. If video quality is your priority, buy Nintendo’s camera or test an existing compatible USB camera. If you want the most charming Switch 2 accessory and can accept soft, limited video, Hori’s Piranha Plant is arguably a work of art precisely because its best feature is not the image it captures—it is the character it puts on your desk.
