Horizon Call of the Mountain is a polished, visually striking PS VR2 adventure built around climbing, exploration and bow combat. Its biggest strengths are the feeling of stepping into the Horizon world and the physicality of its VR interactions; its main limitation is a linear, mission-based campaign that offers less mechanical novelty and openness than the main series. It is best suited to PS VR2 owners who want an immersive visit to the setting, not another open-world Horizon RPG.
What is Horizon Call of the Mountain?
Horizon Call of the Mountain is a PS5 action-adventure developed by Guerrilla and Firesprite, released on February 22, 2023. It was designed for PS VR2 rather than adapted from a flat-screen game, and requires the PS VR2 headset and two PS VR2 Sense controllers to play. PlayStation Store
You play as Ryas, a disgraced former Carja soldier seeking redemption while investigating a threat to the Sundom. Guerrilla places the story between quests in Horizon Zero Dawn. This is a first-person spin-off, not a new open-world adventure starring Aloy. PlayStation Blog

A polished showcase, but not a major VR reinvention
GameSpot scored the game 7/10, describing it as a well-made Horizon game in VR and a good PS VR2 showcase, while noting that it does not bring anything revolutionary to VR. That captures the key trade-off: presentation and atmosphere are stronger selling points than mechanical innovation. The climbing, exploration, machine encounters, bow use and crafting support the setting, but the reviewed experience is not built around a radically new VR idea. GameSpot review
How long is it, and what is the campaign like?
The campaign is linear and divided into replayable missions, with occasional branching routes and collectibles, according to UploadVR. Its reviewer reported finishing the campaign in nine hours; that is one person’s playthrough, not a guaranteed completion time. The game also includes a challenge hub, a place to display collectibles and a boat-ride machine safari. UploadVR review

- Cutting-edge performance
- 4K HDR visuals

The mission structure is a useful expectation to set: there is room to revisit levels and pursue optional finds, but this is not an expansive open world or a long role-playing campaign. Players looking primarily for freeform exploration may find the format restrictive.
Comfort, controls and room setup
UploadVR reports options for seated or standing play, dominant-hand selection, stick or gesture locomotion, movement speed, smooth or snap turning, and adjustable movement vignettes. These settings provide ways to tailor movement, but they cannot guarantee comfort; motion tolerance varies from person to person. UploadVR review

Who should play Horizon Call of the Mountain?
A good fit if you want
- A first-person visit to the Horizon world with striking environments.
- Climbing and bow combat that make use of VR interaction.
- A polished PS VR2 adventure arranged as replayable missions.
Look elsewhere if you expect
- An open world comparable to the main Horizon games.
- A lengthy, open-ended role-playing campaign.
- A VR game defined by a major mechanical breakthrough.
The hardware requirement matters to the value judgment: if you already own PS VR2 and enjoy climbing-led VR games, the game’s strongest qualities are directly relevant. If you do not own the headset, the game cannot be played on PS5 without it, so its appeal alone may not justify that hardware commitment.
