Horrorria 3.8 is a Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 modpack for Forge. Install the client ZIP in a CurseForge-compatible launcher, allocate at least 6 GB of memory, and use the matching [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip for multiplayer. Every player and the server must use the same Horrorria release and Minecraft/Forge target. The project page lists version 3.8 as released September 5, 2026; check that page again immediately before downloading because the files are versioned and can change.

What Horrorria is and what you need

Horrorria is built as a horror and hardcore experience rather than a light collection of convenience mods. Its description centers on psychological horror inspired by From the Fog: Herobrine, a Cave Dweller, Slenderman, darkness, stalking, footsteps, flickering torches and jump scares. CurseForge categorizes the project for horror, hardcore, multiplayer, combat/PvP and exploration, so a world can be played alone or with friends while retaining a deliberately threatening atmosphere.

The current listing identifies Horrorria 3.8, dated September 5, 2026, for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 on Forge. The project page reports 258,704 downloads at that listing snapshot. Those figures are useful for identifying the release, not a promise that the count or version will remain unchanged.

Item Required or current value Why it matters
Minecraft edition Java Edition The pack is not listed as a Bedrock add-on.
Minecraft version 1.20.1 Both client and server must target this version.
Mod loader Forge A Fabric or NeoForge profile is not the listed target.
Current project release 3.8, September 5, 2026 Use the same release on every client and on the server.
Client archive [ Horrorria ]-3.8.zip Import this archive into a launcher that supports CurseForge modpacks.
Server archive [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip Use this matching archive for a dedicated server.
Memory baseline 6 GB of RAM or more This is the creator’s stated minimum for the modpack, not a guaranteed player-count specification.

Before installing the client

  • Use a launcher that can install or import CurseForge modpacks.
  • Make sure the computer has at least 6 GB of memory available for Minecraft. The operating system and other applications need memory too, so a machine with only 6 GB total RAM may struggle even though 6 GB is the pack’s stated baseline.
  • Download the client archive from the Horrorria project files page, not an unverified mirror. Confirm that the filename identifies release 3.8 and Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
  • Keep the ZIP unchanged. Renaming it is harmless, but opening it and selectively removing mods can create a profile that no longer matches the published pack.
  • If you already have a Horrorria world, copy its save folder somewhere safe before changing versions. A newer or older mod configuration can alter world data.

Install Horrorria 3.8 on a client

  1. Open a compatible launcher. Sign in with the Minecraft account that owns Java Edition, then open the launcher area for CurseForge or custom modpack profiles. Labels differ between launchers, but the operation is usually called Import, Import ZIP or Create custom profile.
  2. Import the archive. Select [ Horrorria ]-3.8.zip. Let the launcher read the manifest and download the listed mods, libraries and configuration files. Do not point the importer at the server ZIP; it is a different archive for a dedicated server.
  3. Verify the generated profile. Open the profile’s details and confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. If the launcher proposes another Minecraft version or loader, cancel and re-import the correct archive.
  4. Set memory. In the profile’s settings, enable a custom memory limit and set the maximum to at least 6 GB. Leave enough RAM for the operating system; assigning every gigabyte to Minecraft can cause system swapping and worse performance.
  5. Launch once without joining a server. The first run may take longer while Forge builds its libraries and the pack creates configuration files. Reach the title screen, then close the game normally. This confirms that the local profile can start before you troubleshoot networking.
  6. Keep the profile isolated. Avoid adding shaders, performance mods or extra content until the unmodified pack starts reliably. If an addition causes a crash, you can remove it without wondering whether the original archive was installed incorrectly.
  7. Join only after the operator confirms the server build. Ask for the exact Horrorria release, Minecraft version and Forge target, then select the matching profile in multiplayer. Enter the server address supplied by the operator.

Memory allocation and first-launch performance

The creator’s explicit guidance is “the modpack needs 6gb of ram or more.” Treat 6 GB as a baseline allocation for the game process, not as a promise that any computer will run every view distance or player load smoothly. A computer with 8 GB total system memory leaves little headroom after assigning 6 GB to Java; a system with more total memory can provide that allocation more comfortably.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In the launcher profile, look for a memory slider or a JVM-arguments field. If the launcher exposes arguments, the relevant values are -Xms6G for initial heap and -Xmx6G for maximum heap. Use the launcher’s own memory control when it offers one, and do not add multiple conflicting -Xmx values. Restart the launcher after changing the setting so the new profile is actually used.

Allow the first world load to finish before judging performance. Horror effects such as darkness, audio cues and entities can make a scene feel busy even when the frame rate is acceptable. If the game stutters, lower render and simulation distances in the video settings, close other memory-heavy programs, and test the unmodified profile again. These changes affect client smoothness; they do not replace the server’s need for adequate CPU and memory.

Set up a self-hosted Horrorria server

A self-hosted server gives the operator direct control over files, backups, updates and access, but the operator is also responsible for Java, firewall rules, port forwarding, uptime and recovery. The available documentation establishes a 6 GB RAM baseline for the modpack but does not publish a guaranteed player count or CPU specification. Choose hardware based on the number of simultaneous players, view distances and other workloads rather than treating 6 GB as a capacity promise.

  1. Create a clean server directory. Use a folder dedicated to this installation. Keeping the world, logs, mods and configuration in one directory makes backups and version checks easier.
  2. Install a Forge 1.20.1 server. Use the Forge server installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and let it create the server files in the directory. The exact generated launcher filename can vary, so use the launch script or server file produced by that installation rather than guessing a filename.
  3. Download the matching server pack. From the Horrorria files page, obtain [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip. Confirm that its release date and version are the same as the client archive you distributed to players.
  4. Extract the server archive into the Forge directory. Preserve the archive’s folder structure. If your extraction program creates an extra nested folder, move the contents so the server’s mods and configuration are beside the Forge server files, not hidden one directory deeper.
  5. Accept Minecraft’s EULA. Start the server once. When it stops and creates eula.txt, read the license, change the EULA setting to accept it, save the file and start the server again. The server will not run until this requirement is met.
  6. Set Java memory for the server. Configure the start script or hosting panel so the Java process can use at least 6 GB. Keep additional system memory for the operating system, file cache and any other services. Do not allocate more memory than the machine physically has.
  7. Wait for a clean startup. The console should finish loading and remain running instead of returning immediately to the shell. Stop it with the server’s normal shutdown command before editing files or taking a backup; killing the process can leave world data incomplete.
  8. Back up the new world. Stop the server, copy the world directory and the server configuration to another location, then restart. Keep dated backups before every pack update.
  9. Make the server reachable. On a home network, allow the Java server through the host firewall and configure the router’s port forwarding as appropriate. Give friends the public address only after testing from outside the local network. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a managed host or another network solution instead of repeatedly changing pack files.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting

Consideration Self-hosting Managed hosting
Upfront and recurring cost No separate hosting subscription, but you supply the computer, electricity and internet connection. Requires a recurring plan; current prices and availability depend on the provider and region.
Networking work You handle firewall permissions, router port forwarding, address changes and uptime. The host normally supplies a reachable server endpoint and handles much of the network administration.
Files and backups Full control over the server-pack files, world copies, logs and update timing. Control depends on the panel and plan; confirm that you can upload the matching server ZIP and download backups.
CPU and RAM Limited by the computer you own. Reserve at least the pack’s 6 GB baseline plus operating-system headroom. Limited by the selected plan. Verify the advertised RAM and CPU are sufficient before paying.
Maintenance You install Forge, apply pack updates, monitor crashes and recover worlds. The provider keeps the machine online, but you still need to select the correct pack release and maintain world backups.

CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes a flow in which you choose a modpack, select a plan and region, enter server details and complete payment. The service is powered by Shockbyte and uses Tebex for billing. Check the current catalog first: a hosted listing can change, and the presence of a server pack does not guarantee that Horrorria is available in every region or plan. Select a plan that meets or exceeds the pack’s 6 GB baseline, then verify that all players can install the corresponding client release.

Prepare friends for multiplayer

  1. Send players the exact release number, not just the name “Horrorria.” For this guide that is 3.8, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
  2. Have everyone import the same client ZIP and launch it once before the scheduled session.
  3. Tell players which address to use and whether the server is online. A local address works only on the same network; remote friends need the reachable address provided by the operator or host.
  4. Keep optional client modifications out of the first session. A clean profile makes a mismatch easier to diagnose.
  5. Agree on a backup policy before starting a long-running world. Horror and hardcore mechanics can make a mistake costly, and a dated copy is the only dependable way to recover an earlier state.

Updating, downgrading and preserving worlds

The files page contains versioned releases, so treat every update as a coordinated change. The operator should announce the target release, update the server pack, and distribute the matching client archive at the same time. A player who launches an older profile against a newer server may see missing-mod, registry or configuration errors; a newer client can fail against an older server for the same reason.

  1. Stop the server cleanly and copy the world, configuration and server logs.
  2. Record the current Horrorria release, Minecraft version and Forge version in the backup folder name.
  3. Install the new server files in a separate directory or preserve a restorable copy of the old directory.
  4. Start the new release with a test world first. Confirm that the console reaches a stable running state and that a client can join.
  5. Only then open the updated release to the main world. Keep the old backup until every player has connected successfully.

Downgrading is not a harmless rollback. Mod updates can change registries, world-generation settings or saved data. Restore the complete pre-update world and configuration instead of copying selected files from a newer installation into an older one.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The profile will not import Wrong archive or an unsupported launcher Use a launcher with CurseForge modpack import, select the client ZIP, and re-download it if the archive is incomplete.
Forge starts but the pack crashes during loading Wrong Minecraft version, wrong loader, altered files or insufficient memory Confirm 1.20.1 Forge, restore the unmodified profile, set at least 6 GB, and inspect the launcher crash report.
Client reaches the menu but cannot join Client/server release mismatch Compare the exact archive release, Minecraft version and Forge target on both sides. Do not assume two files with the same project name are interchangeable.
Server exits immediately EULA not accepted, missing Forge files or an invalid start script Read the console output, accept the EULA when prompted, and start the Forge files generated for 1.20.1.
Friends cannot connect while the operator can Firewall, router or network-address problem Test from outside the home network, verify the forwarded port and firewall rule, and check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT.
Severe lag or repeated pauses Memory pressure, CPU saturation, excessive view distance or too many concurrent effects Confirm the 6 GB baseline, leave system headroom, lower distances, close competing applications and review server logs.
A world behaves differently after an update Changed mod configuration or world data Stop the server, restore the dated backup and test the update on a copy before reopening the main world.

When asking for help, include the exact Horrorria release, Minecraft and Forge versions, launcher name, whether the failure is client or server side, and the relevant section of the log. The project page directs users to contact the creator through Discord or comments and to report bugs there. A precise version and log excerpt is much more useful than a screenshot of a generic crash screen.

How to get the intended horror experience

Horrorria’s design depends on uncertainty: darkness, sounds, stalking and sudden events are part of the content rather than signs that the installation is broken. Play in a quiet environment with headphones if you want to notice the footsteps and audio cues, but keep the volume at a safe level. For a group, decide whether everyone wants hardcore-style consequences before starting; the project is tagged for both hardcore play and multiplayer, and those expectations can differ between friends.

Do not disable a horror or entity mod merely because its first event is startling. If a specific effect causes a technical crash, reproduce it on a copy of the world and report the version and log. Removing a mod from the published pack can make a client incompatible with the server and can damage existing saves.

Key facts to verify before every session

  • The project page still lists the release you intend to use.
  • The client archive and server archive have the same release number.
  • Both sides target Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge.
  • The client and server have at least the creator’s stated 6 GB memory baseline available, with extra headroom for the operating system.
  • The server has a current, restorable world backup.
  • Remote players have a reachable address and the operator has tested the firewall or hosting endpoint.

The Bottom Line

For the least trouble, install the unmodified Horrorria 3.8 client ZIP in a CurseForge-compatible launcher, allocate at least 6 GB, and pair it with the exact [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip on a Forge 1.20.1 server. Keep dated backups and verify the project files page before every update.
