Which rules books do you need?
The first decision is not which model to field, but which rules documents govern the force. Games Workshop describes Liber Custodes as the essential guide to using Legio Custodes in Horus Heresy. Its Third Edition Legio Custodes supplement is an addition to that army book, not a self-contained army list.

Start with the army book and core rulebook
Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes identifies itself as “Third Edition – Version 1.0.” Its foreword says it supplements the Army Lists in Liber Custodes and provides selected units for detachments using the Legio Custodes Army List. The document explicitly requires both Liber Custodes and the Age of Darkness Rulebook. In practical terms, the supplement is not a substitute for either one: it adds material to the army-list framework and rules system in those books.

Keep similarly named references separate
Talons of the Emperor is another official rules reference. It covers Legio Custodes and Anathema Psykana army lists, as well as Agents of the Divisio Assassinorum, and its foreword also says it is not stand-alone. However, the surfaced PDF is Version 1.1 and is not the same document as the Third Edition Version 1.0 Legio Custodes supplement. When checking a rule, identify the title, edition and version printed on the document instead of assuming that material from one reference automatically describes the other.
The Legio Custodes supplement identifies the Third Edition context; the separate Talons of the Emperor reference has its own version label. For a game using Third Edition, use the books and supplement that match that edition, and confirm that any additional reference you consult applies to the same rules set.
What “Expanded” means for a Custodes unit
In the Legio Custodes Legacies document, every included profile is classified as Expanded. That label describes a profile category; it is not a warning that the unit is unofficial, forbidden, or unavailable to a normal army. Games Workshop’s explanatory box says both Core and Expanded profiles may be used freely in a Horus Heresy battle, and that the classification does not affect a unit’s availability in an army or detachment.

This distinction matters when reading a supplement or discussing a list with an opponent. The category alone does not tell you that a unit is restricted to a special event, a particular detachment, or an optional house rule. It also does not provide a complete profile or tell you how the unit performs: for those questions, consult its actual rules in the applicable publication.
A quick document check before list building
- Confirm the edition. Check that the rules set for the game is Horus Heresy Third Edition and that the Legio Custodes supplement says “Third Edition – Version 1.0.”
- Have the required foundation. Use Liber Custodes for the army-list framework and the Age of Darkness Rulebook for the core rules required by the supplement.
- Use Legacies for its stated purpose. Consult it for the selected Expanded Units it adds; do not treat it as a complete standalone Custodes army book.
- Check the actual profile and current document version. A category label or a preview description is not a replacement for the full unit rules. Use the applicable profile to verify the details relevant to your game.
- Do not blend references by title alone. If you also consult Talons of the Emperor, note its Version 1.1 label and confirm its relevance to the edition being played.
Achillus or Galatus: what roles do they suggest?
Games Workshop’s January 2026 preview gives a clear, limited contrast between two Custodes Contemptor dreadnoughts. The Contemptor-Achillus is described as a threat to enemy armour; the Contemptor-Galatus is described as better suited to crowd control, with a flamer-equipped sword and extra durability from its shield. These are the publisher’s role descriptions, not independent performance testing or a complete comparison of their rules.

Choose the Achillus when the target suggests it
The Achillus is the clearer fit when you want a dreadnought described around damaging armour. The preview specifically points to its spear and says the weapon deals Damage 3, then characterises the model as capable of dealing with enemy armour. That makes “anti-armour” a fair shorthand for the role Games Workshop is presenting.

Keep the number attached to that source and weapon: the preview’s Damage 3 description is about the Achillus spear. It is not a general damage value for the model, a claim about every attack, or a measure of how often the dreadnought destroys a target. The full profile is needed to answer questions about its other characteristics or how it performs in a particular matchup.
Choose the Galatus when the crowd-control description fits
The preview frames the Galatus around crowd control and points to a different package: a flamer in its sword, a warblade, and extra shield durability. Those details support a contrast with the Achillus based on intended target and equipment emphasis: the Galatus is the preview’s crowd-control and shield-durability example, rather than its armour-hunting example.
That description does not establish a points-efficiency verdict, a universal advantage against infantry, or a guarantee that the Galatus survives longer in every situation. The source provides a role summary and selected equipment cues, not the complete statistics needed for those conclusions.

Use the contrast as a list-building prompt, not a substitute for profiles
Ask what job you need the dreadnought to suggest in the force: the Achillus has the preview’s armour threat and Damage 3 spear cue, while the Galatus has its crowd-control description and shield durability cue. Then consult the current profile and the rules for the game before making a final selection. The preview does not establish their points, full weapon statistics, movement, or matchup performance, so those should not be inferred from the role labels.

Games Workshop’s article dated 17 March 2026 describes a way for Loyalist players to add Legio Custodes through an Allied Detachment. In that setup, the detachment provides a Command slot for a Shield Captain and Troops slots for Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities. This is a specific allied-force example, not a comprehensive guide to every Custodes detachment or every army-list option.
The same article says the models are capable at ranged combat but particularly shine in melee. It highlights eternity blades, their Initiative modifier and Duellist’s Edge (1), as well as access to four special Gambits. These are claims and features highlighted by the official allied-Custodes article; they should not be extended to every unit or read as a full account of the relevant profiles.

What the detachment example gives you
- Command: a slot for a Shield Captain.
- Troops: slots for Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities.
- Character of the force: Games Workshop describes the models as capable at ranged combat, with a particular strength in melee.
For a player considering allies, the example is useful because it names both the command choice and the two Troops Sodalities that the article says can occupy the listed slots. It does not establish the full eligibility requirements, points cost, restrictions, or other detachment rules. Check the applicable army-list entries and current rules before building the force; do not assume that the short article description supplies those omitted details.
Understand the Gambit reference at the right level
The March 2026 article identifies four special Gambits and gives Stone’s Aegis and World Serpent’s Bane as examples. It frames these as serving defensive and lethal-strike purposes, respectively. That supports a broad distinction in how the examples are presented, but not a detailed account of every Gambit’s timing, exact effect, eligibility, or interaction with other rules.
Use the article as a pointer to the themed options, then read the relevant rules text for the exact procedure and effect in your game. The figure of four refers to the special Gambits the article says are accessible in its allied-Custodes discussion; it should not be treated as a count of all Gambits in Horus Heresy.

What the available descriptions do—and do not—tell you
The official material supports a useful starting map: Liber Custodes is the central army book; the Legio Custodes Legacies supplement supplies selected Expanded Units for Third Edition; Expanded does not itself restrict availability; the Achillus and Galatus have distinct previewed role emphases; and the 2026 allied-force article gives a Shield Captain and two Guard Sodalities as examples of an Allied Detachment structure.
It does not support a full unit-by-unit tactical guide. Beyond the named examples, the material here does not establish the battlefield roles of every Custodes unit, the complete profiles of the two dreadnoughts, their points, a direct efficiency comparison, or competitive results. Avoid treating a model preview or an allied-force overview as a substitute for the relevant rules pages.
Rules PDFs, FAQs and product ranges can change. Games Workshop’s surfaced Legio Custodes supplement is Third Edition, Version 1.0, and the linked official articles are dated January and March 2026. Before a game, check that the version in use matches the agreed edition and consult any applicable current updates. That is especially important when comparing documents with different version labels, such as the Third Edition Legio Custodes supplement and the separate Version 1.1 Talons of the Emperor PDF.
