Set one stable fully qualified domain name (FQDN), point that name to your VPS with an A or AAAA record, then set the VPS address’s PTR (reverse-DNS) value to the same name through your hosting provider. The domain owner controls forward DNS; the IP-address owner normally controls the reverse zone. A correct forward-and-reverse match makes game-server logs, monitoring, diagnostics and mail-server identity consistent, but a PTR record is not a substitute for SPF, DKIM or DMARC.

What a VPS hostname, forward DNS and reverse DNS each do
A VPS hostname is the server’s fully qualified domain name, such as server.example.com. The name is useful only when DNS data connects it to the server’s address. Forward DNS starts with the name and returns an address:
- An A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address.
- An AAAA record maps a hostname to an IPv6 address.
Reverse DNS starts with an address and returns a hostname in a PTR record. IPv4 reverse names are under in-addr.arpa; IPv6 reverse names are under ip6.arpa. The two directions are separate zones and can be administered by different organizations.

| Forward | server.example.com |
A or AAAA record returning the VPS address | Your domain DNS provider |
| Reverse | An IP address such as 192.0.2.10 |
PTR returning server.example.com. |
The IP owner or VPS/cloud provider |
The address 192.0.2.10 is a documentation example, not a routable production address. For that address, the IPv4 reverse query name is 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa: reverse the four octets, then append in-addr.arpa. A PTR value is normally written as a fully qualified name with a trailing dot, although control panels may add the dot for you.
Who can change a PTR record?
Owning example.com lets you edit forward records for that domain. It does not automatically let you edit the reverse zone for an IP allocated to someone else. The provider that owns the address block normally publishes its PTR records and may expose a field labelled Reverse DNS, rDNS or PTR in the VPS panel.
Recommended Free Tools
Some providers permit one PTR value per address through self-service settings. Others require a support request. If you lease a delegated block, the provider may delegate authority for part of the reverse zone to your nameservers. Without delegation, changes made only at your domain DNS host cannot alter the provider-owned reverse record.

What to ask a provider before ordering a VPS
| Capability | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Self-service PTR editing | Lets you correct a hostname without waiting for support. | Can I set and change PTR values for each IPv4 and IPv6 address? |
| IPv4 and IPv6 coverage | A server using both protocols needs reverse records in both namespaces. | Are PTR records available for the address types assigned to my VPS? |
| Reverse-zone delegation | Useful when you operate an IP prefix and need your own reverse nameservers. | Can authority be delegated, including non-octet prefixes? |
| Verification and support | Helps distinguish a configuration error from publication or cache delay. | Do you provide status, TTL information or a support workflow for rDNS? |
| Mail-server policy | Outbound SMTP systems commonly inspect reverse DNS. | Are there restrictions or approval steps for mail use? |
Correct setup sequence for a VPS hostname and PTR
- Choose one stable FQDN. Pick a name you will keep for the life of the service, such as
game01.example.comorserver.example.com. Avoid using a temporary provider hostname if applications, certificates or mail will identify the machine by your own domain. - Create forward DNS. At the authoritative DNS provider for your domain, create an A record whose name is the chosen FQDN and whose value is the VPS IPv4 address. If the VPS has usable IPv6, create an AAAA record for the same FQDN and the assigned IPv6 address. Do not put an IPv6 address in an A record or an IPv4 address in an AAAA record.
- Set reverse DNS at the IP owner. Open the VPS or cloud control panel’s Reverse DNS, rDNS or PTR section. Select the exact address and enter the same FQDN. If there is no field, ask support whether they can set the value or delegate the reverse zone.
- Wait for publication and cache refresh. The provider’s authoritative server must publish the new PTR, and recursive resolvers may continue returning an older value until cached data expires. A successful save in a panel is not proof that every resolver has updated.
- Test forward resolution. From a system with the
digutility, run:
dig +short game01.example.com A
dig +short game01.example.com AAAA
The first command should return the intended IPv4 address. The second should return the intended IPv6 address when IPv6 is configured; an empty answer is expected when no AAAA record exists.
- Test reverse resolution. Query each address directly:
dig +short -x 192.0.2.10
host 192.0.2.10
The answer should be the chosen FQDN. Repeat with the VPS’s real IPv6 address using dig +short -x if an IPv6 PTR is configured.
- Confirm the round trip. Take the name returned by the PTR query and resolve it again with the A and AAAA commands. RFC 1912 recommends that PTR and A data match and that PTR point to a valid A target rather than a CNAME. For a dual-stack host, make sure the returned name has the expected address records and that you have not accidentally pointed one address at a different machine.
How IPv4 and IPv6 reverse zones are formed
IPv4
IPv4 reverse DNS reverses address octets. An address written as 192.0.2.10 becomes 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa. You normally do not create that zone yourself for a single VPS address; the provider owns the enclosing reverse zone and gives you a field for the PTR value.

For a delegated /24, a common reverse zone is written as 100.51.198.in-addr.arpa, covering addresses in the corresponding 198.51.100.0/24 documentation block. Smaller or non-octet delegations require provider-specific handling, commonly based on the RFC 2317 classless reverse-DNS technique. Ask the address owner exactly which nameservers are authoritative before creating records.
IPv6
IPv6 reverse DNS reverses every hexadecimal nibble of the address and appends ip6.arpa. The resulting name is much longer than an IPv4 reverse name. A provider may support IPv4 PTR, IPv6 PTR or both, depending on the address assignment and panel. If users can reach the service over IPv6, configure and test the IPv6 PTR separately rather than assuming the IPv4 setting covers it.
Why PTR matters for game servers, operations and mail
PTR is optional in the DNS standard, but a name is easier for people and tools to interpret than a bare address. Log viewers, traceroutes, intrusion-detection systems and network support records may display the reverse name, making it easier to identify which VPS generated traffic. A stable name also prevents confusion when a provider changes internal labels or when several game instances share one host.

Mail systems are stricter. Receiving SMTP servers often inspect whether the sending address has a PTR and whether the name is plausible. Missing or contradictory reverse DNS can contribute to poor delivery reputation. A typical mail identity uses the PTR name for the server’s greeting and keeps the forward lookup consistent:
- The SMTP service’s HELO or EHLO name should match the intended hostname.
- The PTR for the sending address should return that hostname.
- The hostname should resolve back to the sending address with an A record; configure AAAA consistently if the server sends over IPv6.
PTR does not authenticate the domain that authorized a message. SPF publishes permitted sending hosts, DKIM signs message content and domain identity, and DMARC tells receivers how to evaluate alignment and handle failures. Configure those controls independently when operating mail on the VPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verification: separate a bad record from a cache delay
Always test both directions and, when a change seems missing, compare an authoritative answer with a public recursive answer. A recursive resolver can legally return an older value during its cache lifetime, while the provider’s authoritative server may already be correct.

Forward checks
dig +short game01.example.com A
dig +short game01.example.com AAAA
An empty result means the queried record is absent from that resolver’s view. A wrong address means the record exists but points elsewhere, or you queried a name different from the one entered in the provider panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReverse checks
dig +short -x 192.0.2.10
host 192.0.2.10
If these return different names from the one you configured, check whether the provider saved the value for the correct address. If an authoritative query is correct but a recursive query is old, allow cache expiry and query again.
Round-trip check
Resolve the PTR name returned by the reverse query. The resulting A record should include the original IPv4 address. For IPv6, verify the corresponding AAAA record. A PTR that points to a nonexistent name, to a CNAME, or to a different address is a broken identity chain even though a PTR record technically exists.
Common failures and precise fixes
- Editing the wrong DNS service: Adding an A record at your domain host does not change a provider-owned PTR. Set reverse DNS in the VPS panel or request it from the IP owner.
- Reversing the IPv4 address incorrectly: The octets must be reversed in order.
192.0.2.10uses10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa, not the original order. - Using a short or relative target: Enter a complete FQDN such as
game01.example.com. A control panel may append the domain automatically, so inspect the saved value to avoid accidental duplication. - Pointing PTR at a CNAME: Use a hostname with a valid A record instead. RFC 1912 recommends a direct A target for PTR data.
- Configuring only IPv4: Clients or mail servers that connect over IPv6 will see the IPv6 reverse zone. Set an IPv6 PTR if the address is in service, and ensure its AAAA record is correct.
- Assuming a saved panel value is immediately public: Check the provider’s authoritative answer and then a recursive resolver. Publication and cache refresh are separate events.
- No PTR control exists: Contact support and ask whether the address block is delegated, whether support must set the record, and which exact FQDN they require.
- Mail still fails after PTR is fixed: Verify HELO/EHLO, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. PTR alone does not provide modern message authentication.
When you need delegated reverse DNS
A single VPS customer generally needs one provider-managed PTR per address. Delegation becomes useful when you control an IP prefix, run your own authoritative nameservers or need many reverse records managed alongside your infrastructure. A /24 IPv4 block can commonly be delegated as a reverse zone; non-octet blocks need the provider to implement classless delegation correctly. Obtain the delegation details from the IP owner, publish the required nameservers, and test authority before moving records.
Delegation does not remove the forward-and-reverse consistency requirement. Every PTR target should still be a stable FQDN with appropriate A data, and every address used by a service should be tested independently.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist before putting the VPS into service
- One stable FQDN has been selected and documented.
- An A record points that name to the production IPv4 address.
- An AAAA record exists only when the production IPv6 address is reachable and intended for use.
- The IP owner’s PTR value matches the FQDN exactly.
- Forward queries return the expected address or addresses.
- Reverse queries for every active address return the intended FQDN.
- The PTR name resolves back to the original address and does not rely on a CNAME.
- Game-server, monitoring and operating-system settings use the same hostname where a name is required.
- Mail software, if installed, sends the matching HELO/EHLO name and has SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured separately.
- Any remaining discrepancy has been checked against authoritative and recursive DNS answers rather than judged from one cached lookup.
