For a single Linux VPS, install Grafana Mimir in monolithic mode. The Linux AMD64 binary is the simplest option; the official Docker image is equivalent when you prefer container lifecycle management. Both use one process, a demonstration filesystem configuration, and Mimir’s HTTP API. Use the example only for evaluation: durable object storage, authentication, TLS, backups, and capacity planning are required before production use.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Choose the deployment model before installing
Mimir can run as one process on a VPS or as a distributed workload on Kubernetes. Your infrastructure determines the right path.

| Method | Operational overhead | Upgrade and rollback | Isolation | Persistence work | Scaling model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linux binary | Lowest; you manage the process directly | Replace the executable and retain the configuration; keep the previous file for rollback | Runs under a dedicated operating-system account | You manage directories, permissions, backups, and disks | One monolithic process on the VPS | A straightforward single-server installation |
| Docker | Low to moderate; Docker manages the process boundary | Pull a new image and recreate the container; keep the configuration and data mounts unchanged | Container namespace and an explicit Docker network | Bind mounts or volumes must be backed up and sized | One monolithic container unless you move to an orchestrator | A VPS already operated with containers |
mimir-distributed Helm chart |
Highest; requires Kubernetes administration | Helm release history and Kubernetes rollouts | Separate Kubernetes workloads and services | Persistent volumes plus external object storage for production | Distributed components that can be scaled independently | A VPS that is a Kubernetes node or part of a cluster |
Do not choose Helm merely because it is available. Grafana’s quick-start Helm procedure is aimed primarily at local or development setups and has materially higher prerequisites than a monolithic binary or container.
What a one-VPS Mimir installation contains
Monolithic mode combines the Mimir services in one process. Prometheus sends samples with the Prometheus remote-write protocol, and Grafana queries Mimir through its Prometheus-compatible API. The quick-start process listens on HTTP port 9009.

The documented demonstration configuration disables multitenancy, stores blocks and ruler data on the local filesystem under /tmp/mimir, uses memberlist rings, and sets replication factor to 1. Those settings reduce setup work but remove the durability and redundancy expected from a production metrics system.
- Single process: suitable for a small evaluation or a development VPS.
- Local filesystem: data is tied to that machine and its disk.
- Replication factor 1: there is no second replica if the process or disk fails.
- Multitenancy disabled: the demo does not provide tenant isolation.
The official warning is explicit: “Do not use this configuration in production. It is for demonstration purposes only.” Treat that warning as a design requirement, not as a minor caveat.

- A Linux VPS on an architecture supported by the download you select. The command below targets Linux AMD64.
- Administrative access sufficient to create a service account, install the executable or run Docker, and create protected directories.
- Enough disk space for the retention period and compaction activity you expect. A one-time disk check is not a capacity plan; measure ingestion and growth after connecting Prometheus.
- A decision about network exposure. Keep the Mimir API on a private interface or behind a reverse proxy whenever possible.
- Prometheus configured for remote write and a Grafana instance that can reach the Mimir HTTP endpoint.
Create a dedicated operating-system account for the binary installation, and keep the executable, configuration, and data directories outside world-writable locations. For Docker, use a dedicated bind-mounted configuration and persistent data location rather than relying on a container’s writable layer.
Install Mimir from the Linux AMD64 binary
1. Create a protected installation layout
Choose an application directory owned by the service account, such as /opt/mimir, and a separate location for configuration. The demonstration file itself points storage at /tmp/mimir; that is acceptable for a disposable test, but use a durable filesystem path when you begin evaluating retention or recovery.
2. Download and mark the executable
curl -fLo mimir https://github.com/grafana/mimir/releases/latest/download/mimir-linux-amd64
chmod +x mimir
Move the executable into the protected installation directory and verify that the account used to run Mimir can execute it. Pin a specific release for repeatable operations rather than allowing an unattended deployment to follow a moving “latest” artifact.
3. Create demo.yaml
Save the complete monolithic demonstration YAML from Grafana’s Mimir quick start as demo.yaml. It must contain the documented demonstration choices: multitenancy_enabled: false, filesystem-backed blocks and ruler storage under /tmp/mimir, memberlist rings, replication factor 1, and an HTTP listener on port 9009. Keep the file readable only by the service account and administrators.

Do not silently substitute a production interpretation for this file. In particular, changing the directory name does not turn local filesystem storage into a replicated or backed-up store; it only changes where the single node writes.
4. Start Mimir in the foreground for the first test
./mimir --config.file=./demo.yaml
Run this from the directory containing both files during the initial test so that relative paths are unambiguous. Keep the terminal attached and inspect the startup log for configuration errors before adding a supervisor. Once the process starts cleanly, stop it and create a systemd unit or another process-supervisor definition that runs it as the dedicated account, restarts it after failure, and writes logs to your normal journal or logging system.
5. Verify the process locally
Confirm that the process is listening on the configured HTTP port and that the host firewall allows access only from the Prometheus and Grafana networks that need it. A successful listener check proves that the process started; it does not prove that remote write, storage, or queries are working. Complete the Prometheus and Grafana checks below before calling the installation usable.
Run the official Docker image instead
Docker is useful when the VPS already uses containerized services or when you want image-based upgrades and rollbacks. The container still uses the same monolithic demonstration configuration and has the same storage limitations.
1. Create a Docker network
docker network create grafanet
2. Start Mimir with the configuration bind-mounted
docker run --rm --name mimir --network grafanet --publish 9009:9009 --volume "$(pwd)"/demo.yaml:/etc/mimir/demo.yaml grafana/mimir:latest --config.file=/etc/mimir/demo.yaml
The command publishes the Mimir HTTP port on the VPS, places the container on the grafanet network, and mounts the host’s demo.yaml at the path supplied to Mimir. The --rm flag removes the stopped container, so keep the configuration outside the container and use a restart policy or a compose/system service for unattended operation.
For a real service, replace the moving latest tag with a tested version, mount durable data where your configuration expects it, and define a restart policy. A container restart policy improves availability after a process crash; it does not provide backups or protect against a failed VPS disk.

Connect Prometheus for remote write
Add a remote_write entry to Prometheus:
remote_write:
- url: http://localhost:9009/api/v1/push
Use localhost only when Prometheus runs on the same host as the binary and the listener is reachable through that interface. If Prometheus is in another container or on another machine, substitute a routable private hostname or address and allow the connection through the host firewall.
Reload Prometheus using the reload method appropriate to your installation, then inspect its target and remote-write status. A configuration reload without a successful remote-write queue means Mimir is not receiving samples; check the destination address, network policy, and Mimir startup log.
Add Mimir to Grafana
Binary on the same host
In Grafana, open Connections, choose Data sources, select the Prometheus data-source type, and set its URL to:
http://localhost:9009/prometheus
Docker services on the same Docker network
When Grafana is attached to the grafanet network, use the container name as the hostname:
http://mimir:9009/prometheus
Save and test the data source, then open Explore and run a query for a metric that Prometheus is forwarding. The first useful test is a metric you know is being scraped; an empty result can mean either that no samples have arrived yet or that the query is not using the expected label set.
Network and service-operation checklist
- Expose TCP port
9009only to trusted Prometheus, Grafana, or reverse-proxy networks. Avoid publishing it directly to the public internet. - Terminate TLS at a reverse proxy or another controlled edge when clients cross an untrusted network.
- Add authentication and authorization before accepting traffic from multiple users or networks. The demo’s disabled multitenancy is not an access-control system.
- Run the binary as a dedicated account; do not run it as root.
- Store configuration and data outside world-writable directories and apply restrictive ownership and permissions.
- Use systemd, a container restart policy, or an equivalent supervisor so an operator does not have to keep an SSH session open.
- Monitor disk consumption, process restarts, remote-write errors, and query latency. Alert before the filesystem fills.
- Back up configuration and any durable object-storage data according to the recovery time and recovery point you require.
These are operational safeguards rather than a complete hardened systemd or firewall recipe. Exact unit files and firewall rules depend on your Linux distribution, network topology, and reverse-proxy choice.

Why the demonstration configuration is not production storage
Local blocks and ruler files under /tmp/mimir can disappear during cleanup or host replacement. Replication factor 1 means a single failed process or disk removes the only copy. A public listener without authentication allows anyone who can reach it to submit or query data, and disabled multitenancy provides no tenant separation.
For a production deployment, plan all of the following before sending important telemetry:
- Durable object storage: Grafana’s production Helm guidance requires replacing the chart’s demonstration MinIO with external object storage, including Amazon S3-compatible storage, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, or OpenStack Swift.
- Identity and transport security: authenticate clients, authorize operations, and encrypt network traffic where it leaves a trusted private segment.
- Backups and recovery: define what is backed up, how often, and how you restore it on a replacement node.
- Capacity planning: size CPU, memory, disk or object storage, and network from actual ingestion rate, label cardinality, retention, query concurrency, and compaction workload.
- Availability design: use an architecture and replication level that match the outage you are prepared to tolerate.
Do not advertise the single-VPS demo as highly available merely because it remains running during a normal session. Availability is a property of the storage, replication, recovery process, and failure domain, not just the process state.

When Helm and distributed Mimir make sense
Use the mimir-distributed Helm chart when the VPS is actually a Kubernetes node or belongs to an existing cluster and you need separately managed Mimir components. It is not a shortcut for installing one process on a conventional VPS.
| Prerequisite | Quick-start development floor |
|---|---|
| Kubernetes | Version 1.32 or higher |
| Helm | Version 3.8 or higher |
| Node resources | At least 4 CPU cores and 16 GiB RAM for the cited single-node quick start |
| Storage | Persistent storage configured and available to the cluster |
| Networking | Working cluster DNS |
The single-node Helm procedure is primarily for local or development use. For production, configure external object storage rather than the chart’s demo MinIO, and do not rely on the chart’s single-node Kafka setup as an availability design. Treat the stated CPU and memory floor as a development baseline, not a universal production size: real requirements depend on workload measurements.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Prometheus reports remote-write failures
Check whether Prometheus can resolve and reach the Mimir host and port, then verify that the URL ends in /api/v1/push. A container must be on a network that can reach the destination; localhost inside a Prometheus container refers to that container, not the VPS host.

Use the hostname that matches the topology: the local host name for a same-machine binary, or mimir when Grafana and Mimir share the Docker network. Check that the URL uses the /prometheus path and that the listener is not blocked by a host firewall or reverse-proxy rule.
Queries return no data
First verify that Prometheus is scraping the expected target and that its remote-write queue is healthy. Then query a recently scraped metric in Grafana Explore. An empty result immediately after configuration can simply mean that no samples have arrived yet; it can also indicate a label or time-range mismatch.
Data disappears after a restart
That behavior is expected if the demo writes under /tmp, if Docker data was left in the container’s writable layer, or if the host filesystem was replaced. Move to durable storage, mount it explicitly, and implement backups before treating the installation as authoritative.
Upgrade and rollback safely
- Record the current Mimir version, configuration checksum, storage location, and service-supervisor definition.
- Back up the configuration and verify that the backup can be read by an administrator.
- Test the new binary or image with the same configuration in a non-production environment when possible.
- Stop or replace the old process using your supervisor, preserving the data path and permissions.
- Start the new version and inspect logs, remote-write health, and a known Grafana query.
- If startup or query behavior regresses, stop the new process, restore the previous executable or image, and restart with the unchanged configuration.
Pinning versions makes this procedure deterministic. A moving image tag or “latest” download is convenient for an initial trial but weakens auditability and rollback planning.

Single VPS decision checklist
- Choose the binary when you want the fewest moving parts and are comfortable managing a Linux service.
- Choose Docker when the VPS already has a container workflow and you want image-based lifecycle controls.
- Choose Helm only when Kubernetes is already part of the design and you can provide the stated cluster, storage, and resource prerequisites.
- Use the demo YAML only to evaluate ingestion and queries.
- Before production, replace temporary local storage, add security controls, define backups, and size the system from measured workload data.
