Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record three details:
- Which program reports the error: Windows itself, a networking utility, or one specific application or game.
- When it appears: during startup, while connecting to Wi-Fi, after a Windows update, or only when launching one program.
- Which architecture is involved: Windows may be 64-bit even when the failing application is 32-bit.

The hotspotauth.dll error usually means Windows or an application cannot load a Microsoft system component. The file is a genuine Windows component associated with hotspot authentication, not a file you should obtain from a random DLL website.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hotspotauth.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “hotspotauth.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find hotspotauth.dll.”
- “hotspotauth.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “hotspotauth.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Start with Windows Update and built-in repair tools. They restore the correct file for the installed edition, language, architecture, and servicing level instead of introducing an untrusted replacement.

Its related Windows functionality handles authentication with wireless hotspots and captive portals. Microsoft documents support for portals using Wireless Internet Service Provider roaming, or WISPr. When Windows detects a compatible hotspot, the operating system can trigger hotspot-authentication behavior and provide credentials through its networking APIs. See Microsoft’s documentation on handling the hotspot authentication event.

The file is most strongly associated with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era installations. Microsoft update manifests list it in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 packages, including both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. One documented build is version 6.2.9200.16518, with an x86 size of 179,712 bytes and an x64 size of 260,096 bytes. Those values identify a historical Microsoft build, not a universal specification for every Windows installation.
Do not assume every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contains a file with exactly this name. Windows components change between releases and servicing levels. Microsoft’s current documentation describes the broader hotspot-authentication feature and policy, but that does not guarantee that this legacy filename is present on every modern system.
Microsoft also documents the HotspotAuthentication policy, which controls whether Windows probes wireless hotspots for WISPr support.
Where should the file be?
On a typical Windows installation, system DLLs are stored in Windows system directories:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64for many 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows
The name of these folders can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 generally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports many 32-bit files. A 32-bit application also runs under Windows file-system redirection, so the path shown by an error is not enough to select a replacement.
To check whether a copy exists:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
hotspotauth.dll. - If your Windows installation is 64-bit, also inspect
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A genuine system copy should be located in a Windows system directory and should have a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in a program folder, Downloads, AppData, Temp, or an unrelated directory deserves additional scrutiny. Do not delete a suspicious copy before recording its location and running a security scan.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave a Windows component missing, damaged, or mismatched. Windows Update is the quickest official repair path.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the program that showed the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the error appeared immediately after an update, note the update history before removing anything:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10.
- Open Update history.
- Review recently installed updates.
If a particular update clearly coincides with the failure, use Recovery or the update removal controls rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Microsoft explains the available choices in its guide to recovery options in Windows.

If Windows Update repeatedly fails, continue with the next repair. A failed update is often a symptom of component-store corruption rather than the root problem.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC uses that source to replace corrupted protected files.
Save open work, then follow these steps:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or networking feature.
The exact success message matters:
- “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM repaired or confirmed the component source.
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” indicates that SFC replaced damaged files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means more repair is needed.
These are the official Microsoft DISM and SFC instructions.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ own DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line tools.
If DISM cannot find source files
When DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows source. The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level as closely as possible. An arbitrary source from another Windows release can create a new mismatch.

Restart and test. If SFC still cannot repair the file, inspect the CBS log or move to System Restore and an in-place repair rather than copying a DLL by hand.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file authenticity
Security software can quarantine a damaged or altered system file. It can also identify a malicious file that merely uses the same name.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install hotspotauth.dll from the internet.
Instead:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hotspotauth.dll. - Check the recorded file path and detection reason.
- Restore the file only if it is the genuine Microsoft-signed copy from a Windows system directory and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Run a Full scan afterward.
If the file was found in an application directory, a temporary folder, a user profile, or Downloads, do not restore it merely because its filename looks familiar. Run a full security scan and use DISM and SFC to restore the Windows copy.

A malicious replacement can produce the same missing-file message after antivirus software removes it. The safe goal is not simply to make the message disappear. It is to return a correctly signed, compatible Windows component.
Fix 4: Determine whether the file is missing or a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean hotspotauth.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that message when the DLL exists but another library it depends on cannot be loaded.
Check the location first:
- Search
C:WindowsSystem32and, on 64-bit systems,C:WindowsSysWOW64. - If the file exists, right-click it and open Properties.
- Check Digital Signatures and Details.
- Compare the failing program’s architecture with the DLL context it expects.
- Run DISM and SFC even when the file appears present, because a dependent Windows component may be damaged.
Do not respond by installing random copies of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Those runtimes are not established fixes for hotspotauth.dll unless the error separately identifies a missing runtime component. If the message names a specific dependency, repair that dependency through Microsoft or the application’s official installer.
An entry-point error is different again. “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually indicates that the program loaded an incompatible DLL version or that related files come from different servicing levels. Replacing just one file can worsen that mismatch. Repair the complete Windows component or the complete application instead.

If Windows works normally and only one old application reports hotspotauth.dll, the application may be requesting a legacy dependency incorrectly. Public Microsoft documentation confirms the Windows component and its networking role, but it does not establish a reliable list of modern games or applications that directly load this filename.
First use the program’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after backing up the program’s settings or saved data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart and test.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command. If that fails, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from its official source.
A program-specific failure can also result from an incomplete installation, a removed plugin, or an obsolete launcher. Do not assume the Windows DLL is the application’s correct repair file. If reinstalling the application fixes the error, leave the Windows system directories unchanged.
Fix 6: Check network drivers only when networking also fails
hotspotauth.dll is related to hotspot authentication, but a missing DLL message does not prove that a Wi-Fi driver is the cause. Update drivers only when the error occurs alongside wireless disconnects, an unrecognized adapter, a yellow warning icon, or failed network hardware.
To inspect the adapter:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. If the adapter is malfunctioning, select Uninstall Device, restart, and allow Windows to redetect it. Use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot supply a compatible driver.

Manually checking dozens of driver versions is tedious, especially when the hotspot error is accompanied by several networking symptoms. A driver update is not a substitute for DISM, SFC, or application repair when those are the actual cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is generally not the right command for hotspotauth.dll.
Microsoft describes regsvr32 as a tool for registering DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows runtime or system DLL does not become repaired merely because it is registered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRunning commands such as these can produce another error without solving the damaged component:
regsvr32 hotspotauth.dll
Do not use regsvr32 unless official documentation for the specific component explicitly says that it supports registration. For this file, use Windows servicing, SFC, DISM, or application repair.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review likely changes.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, or updates. Back up important files first. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows recovery rather than obtaining a loose DLL.

Fix 8: Reinstall Windows components without deleting your files
On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft provides a repair reinstall through Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Restart when instructed.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and configuration. Microsoft explains the feature in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If the option is unavailable or does not resolve the corruption, use official Windows installation media for an in-place reinstall:

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why downloading hotspotauth.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites sites and files attached to forum posts. A downloaded copy can have:
- Malware or an altered digital signature
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- Incompatible dependencies
- Incorrect language resources
- A version that does not match the component store
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also interfere with Windows servicing, permissions, and file protection. It may hide the original problem without repairing the damaged component.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, System Restore, and the affected program’s official repair or reinstall process. Do not copy a file from another computer, even if both machines appear to run the same Windows version.
FAQ
Is hotspotauth.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component named Microsoft Windows Hotspot Authentication. Its related functionality supports hotspot and captive-portal authentication, including WISPr scenarios. Location and signature still matter because malware can use the same filename.
Does Windows 11 always contain hotspotauth.dll?
No. The file is especially associated with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era systems. Windows releases and servicing levels differ, so do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation has this exact legacy filename.
Should I download a Windows 8 copy for Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. A Windows 8 x86 or x64 file may be incompatible with another Windows release, architecture, or servicing level. Repair the installed Windows version with DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or official installation media.
Why does the error say “module not found” when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency rather than hotspotauth.dll itself. Check the signature and location, then repair Windows and the affected application. Do not replace individual files until the dependency situation is understood.
Should I run regsvr32 hotspotauth.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points. It does not repair an ordinary Windows system component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if only one application fails?
Repair or reinstall that application, and use its launcher’s file-verification feature if available. If Windows itself and other programs work normally, the application may be making an incorrect or outdated dependency request.
What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?
Install pending updates, check antivirus quarantine, and retry DISM with a matching repair source if necessary. Then consider System Restore, the Windows 11 repair reinstall, or an in-place reinstall that keeps personal files and apps.
What should I do if the file is outside the Windows directory?
Do not trust it automatically. Record its path, check its Microsoft signature, and run a full security scan. A copy in a temporary, profile, download, or random application directory may be unauthorized or may be an application-specific file rather than the Windows component.
