If your starting goalkeeper is unavailable, first confirm who is eligible to replace them under the competition’s rules. Use the registered reserve goalkeeper when possible; if no substitution is available, an on-field player may need to take over. Then simplify the defensive plan around the replacement’s experience and communication—not a supposedly universal formation change.
What to check before changing the lineup
The response depends on when the goalkeeper becomes unavailable and what the competition permits. Before kickoff, check the team list and identify the eligible reserve goalkeeper. If the starter is injured or otherwise unable to continue during play, confirm the remaining substitution allowance and any limits on substitution opportunities. Under IFAB Law 3, the governing body sets the permitted number for official competitions, up to a maximum of five; competition-specific regulations determine what applies in a particular match. See IFAB Law 3: The Players and the competition’s own regulations.
- Is the starter unavailable before kickoff, or unable to continue during play?
- Is a goalkeeper listed and eligible to enter?
- How many substitutions and substitution opportunities remain?
- Is there a local goalkeeper-injury protocol in force?
If a substitute goalkeeper can enter
The specialist reserve is usually the most straightforward option if they are eligible and ready. A substitution must follow the Law 3 procedure: inform the referee, have the outgoing player leave before the substitute enters, and wait for the referee’s signal at a stoppage before the substitute comes onto the field.
Once the replacement is in, give the team a short, clear reset rather than layering on unfamiliar instructions. A defender or captain can confirm the back line’s positions and communication cues; the goalkeeper should know the team’s expected distribution choices. The coach can then assess whether the defensive line or buildup needs adjustment based on the replacement’s preparation, the opponent and the match situation.

If no goalkeeper substitution is available
IFAB’s Law 3 guidance addresses the case of a goalkeeper who is seriously injured and cannot continue after the team has used its maximum permitted substitutions and/or substitution opportunities. A remaining player on the field takes over in goal and changes into a shirt that clearly distinguishes them from the other players and match officials. See IFAB Law 3: The Players.
For a player changing places with the goalkeeper, Law 3 requires the referee to be informed and the change to take place during a stoppage. Choose an emergency goalkeeper by considering their experience, basic handling and decision-making confidence, communication, and the disruption caused by moving them from their usual role. These are practical selection factors, not an official ranking of candidates.

How to adjust the team’s defensive responsibilities
There is no evidence-based universal instruction to drop the defensive line, change formation or abandon a particular buildup pattern when a starting goalkeeper is unavailable. Treat those as options, not automatic rules. The replacement’s experience, ability to communicate and comfort with distribution should shape how much responsibility the team asks them to take on.
- Make clear who is organizing the back line and calling out danger.
- Agree on safe, familiar distribution choices rather than demanding unfamiliar risks without a clear reason.
- Consider whether the defensive line and buildup remain suitable for the replacement and the match state.
Prepare the contingency before match day
Coaches can name the first-choice replacement in advance, confirm that the player is on the team list, review the competition’s substitution limits and make sure a clearly distinguishable goalkeeper shirt is available. It is also useful to rehearse an emergency hierarchy among the remaining players in case no substitute goalkeeper can enter. This is preparation advice based on the rules’ fallback, not a separate IFAB requirement.

Check whether a goalkeeper-injury trial applies
IFAB describes its goalkeeper injury protocol as an ongoing trial, not an automatic worldwide rule. Under the trial principle, when a goalkeeper receives on-field assessment or treatment, or an injury causes play to stop, an outfield player must leave the field for one minute after play restarts. Details are on IFAB’s goalkeeper injury trial page.
The Football Association announced on 27 July 2026 that the trial would be implemented in England’s men’s and women’s professional game for the 2026–27 season. In that context, the manager or head coach nominates an outfield player to leave when play stops for a goalkeeper injury. This announcement does not establish that the trial applies in other countries or competitions; check the relevant competition’s current regulations. See The FA’s announcement.
