A Game Boy Advance can display and control PlayStation games in Rodrigo Alfonso’s GBA Remote Play project, but it does not emulate them itself. A Raspberry Pi 3 running RetroPie handles the emulation, then sends the picture over a wired Link Cable connection to the GBA, which sends button input back.
What “the GBA runs PS1 games” really means
The project splits the work between two devices. A Raspberry Pi 3 inside a custom cartridge runs RetroPie and emulates the game; the Game Boy Advance serves as the screen and controller. Its processor is not running PlayStation emulation.
The project software has a Raspberry Pi side that gathers and sends data, and a GBA-side receiver program. That receiver can be loaded over the Link Cable using the GBA multiboot protocol, so the GBA does not need a conventional game cartridge for the receiver.
How the Pi and GBA communicate
The Pi connects to the GBA through a Link Cable wired to the Pi’s SPI pins. Video data travels to the handheld, while button input and synchronization information travel back as needed. The repository documents the pin assignments and software setup.

This narrow connection is central to the design: the Pi does the demanding emulation, but the image still has to fit through the GBA link. The project therefore uses low-resolution video, and most video transfers are one-way.
Resolution, frame rate, and link-speed trade-offs
The project repository lists these display modes and transfer rates. They are project-reported figures, not independent test results.

Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes lowering the image resolution as a way to improve the frame while sacrificing picture quality, and says most games run smoothly. These are descriptions of this project, not a guarantee for every game or configuration.
Which games and platforms can it display?
PlayStation is the headline example, not the only platform. The Pi runs RetroPie, and the project describes playing games through it; Raspberry Pi Official Magazine also mentions SNES and Mega Drive. These systems are emulated on the Pi and streamed to the GBA rather than supported natively by the handheld.

Audio is an experimental feature
The Raspberry Pi can output audio itself. The project’s optional GBA audio support is experimental, can reduce frame rate, and the repository says the documented support was tested only with version 1.0. It should not be treated as polished or universally available.
What it takes to build one
This is a DIY hardware and software project, not a documented retail plug-and-play cartridge. The published build uses a Raspberry Pi 3, RetroPie, GBA Remote Play software, a Link Cable wired to the Pi’s SPI pins, and system configuration.

- GBA Link Cable and wiring: the cable must be connected to the Pi according to the project’s pin assignments; an off-the-shelf cable alone does not recreate the link.
- Soldering tools and setup work: the build involves wiring and software configuration, with project files and instructions available in the GBA Remote Play repository.

Raspberry Pi Official Magazine quotes creator Rodrigo Alfonso describing his original aim as “something you could take to a party and blow your friends’ minds with.” He initially wanted to run Nintendo 64 games, but the magazine quotes him saying: “That was the original idea, but it requires more processing power and fine-tuning to get it working well.” The finished approach makes the Pi the gaming computer and the GBA the portable interface.
