Serena Cherry says she had never played Fortnite before visiting Halloween Horror Nights. After walking through the event’s Fortnitemares scare zone, she went home, downloaded the game and, four weeks later, had played dozens of hours. Her account is one visitor’s unexpected route into Fortnite—not evidence that the attraction converts skeptics as a rule.
From a real-world scare zone to a first Fortnite match
In her October 5, 2026 GamesRadar+ feature, Cherry describes arriving at Halloween Horror Nights as a Fortnite newcomer. The Fortnitemares zone gave her a physical introduction to a world she had previously avoided: a version of Freaky Fields populated by costumed characters and Fortnite props. That encounter made her curious enough to try the game at home.

Four weeks later, Cherry said she had played dozens of hours and was saving V-Bucks for the Jack the Clown and Hamikuma collaboration skins. Those are her descriptions of her own play and plans, not independently verified play records or confirmation that either cosmetic was available in the shop at that moment. She summed up the change this way: “I dropped into the world of Fortnite as a total newbie, but after experiencing it in real life at Halloween Horror Nights, I am now utterly captivated with the game.”
What the 2026 Fortnitemares zone put in front of visitors
The 2026 Fortnitemares attraction was an in-person Halloween Horror Nights scare zone at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, scheduled through November 1, 2026, according to GamesRadar+. It was not a standalone Fortnite game mode at either park.

Universal Orlando’s version was staged in Central Park at Universal Studios Florida. Universal Orlando’s behind-the-scenes account describes a route through Freaky Fields into a Battle Royale scene, where performers fire at one another above the path. Visitors encounter Shadows and Husks, then a storm sequence before reaching an HHN/Fortnitemares party point of interest with the FORTNITEMARES Battle Bus and Skeletara.
Show director Ramon Paradoa highlighted the storm as a moment when the scare effects build around visitors in the pathway: “If you’re caught in the pathway when the storm rolls in, the scares intensify and there’s a really cool show moment.” He also described the zone’s lighting, audio, effects and show control as among the most advanced Universal had used at HHN.

How the park experience related to Fortnite’s 2026 event
Epic Games’ October 1, 2026 Fortnitemares announcement covered in-game activities across Battle Royale, Horde Rush and Reload. It said Halloween Horror Nights outfits and accessories would follow in Fortnite during October. That announcement establishes the planned tie-in, but it does not establish a live shop date, price or current availability for any specific item.
The park attraction and the game event met at the level of theme and imagery: guests walked through an elaborately staged version of Fortnite-inspired scenes, while the game had its own seasonal modes and planned HHN cosmetics. For Cherry, the physical encounter was the nudge that made the digital world worth trying.

Don’t confuse the U.S. scare zone with Japan’s 2025 Fortnite island
Universal Studios Japan announced a separate Fortnite Creative experience in 2025, called UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS HUNT. Its August 20, 2025 announcement describes a prop-hunt-style game set in a midnight version of the park, available from August 22 through November 3, 2025, under island code 0386-7746-7935. The release explicitly says the island was independently created and was not sponsored, supported or managed by Epic Games.

Can Halloween Horror Nights get you into Fortnite?
Cherry’s story shows how a themed attraction can make a game’s setting feel approachable to one person who had never played it. The scare zone gave her recognizable characters, props and scenes to explore in person, and she chose to continue that experience by downloading Fortnite. Her account is a vivid personal example, not proof of a broader trend or a promise that visitors will have the same reaction.
